"Through July 17, 2017, Skylake devices running Windows Embedded 7, 8 and 8.1 will be supported according to the lifecycle support policy for those products. During the 18-month support period, these systems should be upgraded to Windows 10 to continue receiving support after the period ends. After July 2017, the most critical security updates will be addressed for these configurations, and will be released if the update does not risk the reliability or compatibility of the Windows Embedded 7/8/8.1 platform on other devices."

Well, if Steam ever gets off its ass, maybe Linux gaming might happen and I can stay the fuck away from MicroShaft
>>
I was going to buy a Skylake, but reading about what Microsoft intends to do changed my mind.

I don't need a Skylake to run Linux.

whats the oldest linux receiving official support from somebody??
>>
>>53075166
Skylake is a questionable upgrade at best, a downgrade at worst. And things don't even seem to improve in the future as they seem to focus more on energy efficiency. Just vote with your money, folks.
>>
>>53075691
3.12 will be supported till 2017.
>>
>>53075560
4.6 on air without trying.

I doubt the increased IPC and switching to an i7 with HT is worth the cash
>>
>>53075584
This doesn't just apply to Intel. AMD and Qualcomm will also have to go along with it.

In three years, you're only options are going to be Windows 10, Mac or Linux. If you install Windows 8 or 7 or XP, better turn off your Windows Update.
>>
My pc said windows 10 won't work on it, are they going to make me upgrade still?
>>
>>53075749
Linux 3.12 was released on November 2, 2013
Windows Embedded Standard 7 was released on April 27, 2010.

hmmmmm
>>
>>53075560
Which Proc you have has absolutely noting to do with what Op is talking about.

Microsoft is forcing Windows 10 updates. They announced it 3 days ago. In 2 years, your direct X choices will be Windows 10 or Windows 10.

I sincerely expect DX12 to receive about as much attention and support as DX10 did.

That's horrible. My old ass laptop won't run properly in win10. Guess I'm going to install some flavor of linux.

MS cucked themselves buying useless shit like Minecraft and now they're desperate to get out of their negative credit. They should worry more abour successfully developing the hololens rather than shit like this, because if that fails then MS is dead for real. They didn't bring any innovations in last decade and more people keep turning into Applefags because of the new shiny toys they keep making every year.

About $800 worth of games.
>>

You know it's sad when I didn't even remember that DX10 existed until you said it.
>>
>>53076154
Limits of Dx11 haven't even been reached yet
>>
>>53076154
Well you could purchase an SSD to run loonix on if that is the case, Also wine supports a lot of DX9 And DX10 games.
>>
On the plus side, hardware support on Linux today is far, far better than it has ever been before.

Pretty much any hardware that isn't fresh off the presses will run great.
>>
>>53076193
Yeah, mostly anything will run Linux. I've only had bad experiences when i attempt to use stuff with nvidia cards.
>>
>>53076182
>DX11 hasn't reached its limits yet
While this is somewhat true DX11 was only ever used in conjunction with some sort of proprietary engine trick or custom renderer.
Most AAA games and high end programs only use DX as a backend with their own abstraction over it.
>>
So, I'm about to build a computer.
How will not buying Skylake and instead buying AMD prevent this from affecting me?

The driver support is going to end regardless of what proc you have. I don't' see how this changes anything.
>>
>>53076207
Yeah, nvidia stuff is unfortunately spotty here and there.

In my experience, the open-source nouveau drivers are much more reliable than nvidia's binary drivers. Nouveau supports fewer cards, but it has excellent support for the cards it supports.

I have been running debian on my laptop that has a quadro nvs 3100m, and it runs flawlessly with nouveau.

When I was younger, I ran windows full-time, with linux in a virtual machine, to learn the ropes.

Now, it makes more sense to run linux full-time, with windows in a virtual machine, for the rare occasion when I actually need windows.

any of the games that are actually worth playing and aren't autistic kMMO or AAA-title games have linux builds. the shekelers that tied their developers' hands to microsoft's keyboards and directX, such as AAA companies like EA, are gonna have a hard time getting to linux just because of legal difficulties and the fact that all their developers worked with directX since the beginning of their careers and will have to learn openGL.

your shitty "nogames :)" quip is meaningless given that quantity has nothing to do with whether or not gaming is possible.
>>
>>53076344
Programming games is more fun than playing them!
>>
I'll use it without support. Fuck Microsoft. I'd rather torture myself by installing Linux than attempt a Windows 10 install. Just thinking about the amount of work I would need to do learning how to implement IP blocking in pfsense makes me cringe. No thanks. Linux has Vulkan now anyway. By the time Windows 7 is EOL, I can just install Linux as my main machine and have a vt-d Win7 box for old shit.
>>
>>53076344
I can confirm this. I build games professionally. The last thing I want to do when I get off work is look at one.
>>
>>53076417
>Just thinking about the amount of work I would need to do learning how to implement IP blocking in pfsense makes me cringe.

Not to mention all the work that would be involved in maintaining a vigil over all of those fixes to ensure Microsoft didn't undo them when you weren't looking.
