Source: My new 15 inch rMBP is the base model and already came with 16GB of RAM and an upgradeable 256GB PCIe SSD (that's really enough for upgradeability on a laptop, I won't need more than 16GB in the next 5 years for sure)
In real life, the only thing thinkpads can upgrade that Macs can't is the RAM, that's why lenovo puts 4GB on their base model so you pay more to "upgrade" it, while Apple puts 16GB so I will never even need to upgrade the thing.

I work at a local computer repair shop, and we get quite a lot of macbooks to repair.
Most of the issues are disconnected flat cables from the screen and dead HDD's though, so nothing really bad.
Lenovo laptops often come with dead motherboards, sometimes even after just a month of use.

I had an 07 black macbook, in the 5 years that i used it i had to replace the keyboard twice, and before i stopped using it the backlight module ate shit, and so did bluetooth connectivity, for some reason.
Thinkpads are very nice laptops, not built as well as they used to, but still very durable.
Wouldn't buy one new though, since they depreciate like crazy, just like dell and hp's workstation laptops.

How is that irrelevant? If I had an i7, I'd want 32 gigs. I burn through RAM running VMs. As it stands, the 8GB in my $150 Thinkpad is great for running Visual Studio and a really compact Lubuntu VM. But I'll still need my desktop for tougher work.

Well now that's based on our own opinions, but I would say the Ivy Bridge MacBook Air is pretty great at that price, it gets much better battery life, performs great (maybe even greater than the T420), has the best trackpad in the market and is very mobile.
That's subjective though.
