If this isn't biased, though it probably is since it seems like every article writing anything about women being better than men turns out being biased and factually incorrect (boy who cried wold at this point), then this is pretty interesting.
I would guess that women over perform on github because, unlike men who would just jump into github as soon as they learn how to fizz buzz and try to contribute to anything, women would probably have gotten a degree before even daring showing their code to the public.

In the discussion of the paper it says something about how women who contribute to opensource projects are more likely to have masters and bachelor degrees than males. So rather women being better than men at programming (like the article says) it's just that women who complete their degrees and contribute to opensource are more compotent.
Anecdotally this somewhat matches my exprience at university where the few females all seemed interested in computer science or software engineering, while a large portion of males just wanted to make video games.
