Acording to the geniuses at MIT, women are way better than men at programming. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/600812/female-coders-are-more-competent-than-males-according-to-a-new-study/

Again, into the trash it goes. The demographic contributing to open-source is already completely skewed in many ways, both technical and demographic.

Strange how women are so much better and smarter than men and yet in all these millennia they have achieved close to nothing.

Wait... they really just assumed the gender of majority of these people with "techniques"?

Well what they did was try to track down their social media pages and try to judge the gender based on that.
I wouldn't be surprised, if this is intentionally biased, was that they tracked down these social medias (probably twitter accounts with smug anime girls everywhere) went "oh look that's a anime girl in the avatar they must be a girl programmer!" and called it a day on that.

idk i could buy it looking at it in a very screwy-ish way. because men dominate the professional field, if you are a woman in the profession you arent your average run of the mill sandwich maker, ya know?

you could almost argue that if you are female and have been programming professionally for years its because you have a deep rooted passion for it that fat neck beards in the lose through the decades.

been then again probably bullshit.
>>
If this isn't biased, though it probably is since it seems like every article writing anything about women being better than men turns out being biased and factually incorrect (boy who cried wold at this point), then this is pretty interesting.
I would guess that women over perform on github because, unlike men who would just jump into github as soon as they learn how to fizz buzz and try to contribute to anything, women would probably have gotten a degree before even daring showing their code to the public.
Well that seems to be my personal anecdotal understanding of how women typically act.

Forgive me, but this post is relevant and comes straight out of /r/TwoXChromosomes and is relevant:

"How is nobody here commenting on the flawed methodology of the study? This looked at one day of pull requests on Github and only found a 4% difference. They then compared this aggregate number to individual female users, while ommiting users who's profiles are known on the site (reputable coders). They then explain that there is also a drop under the same circumstances for men but that it is lower, but without listing numbers. Again, this is a single daily aggregate compared to these things. This isn't an aggregate of all pull requests for a month or a year it's a day, one data point, and their data doesn't even find correlations that distinguish the genders based on their flawed methodology."

I find it interesting that their method of determining who makes a better programmer is whether a pull request gets accepted. So people who work on personal projects are discounted, and actual quality of program is not taken into consideration at all.

>>52948104

So what of users who have no social media accounts? Are they not counted?
>>
>>52948214
Women's code is only accepted more if it's from a gender neutral account, if it's identifiable as female the code gets accepted less often than if it's identifiable as male. If anything it proves women ARE discriminated.

No, what is most likley is their contributes consist of large, bulky code, mainly comments that don't contribute much other than variable changes and so on.

http://slatestarcodex.com/2016/02/12/before-you-get-too-excited-about-that-github-study/

>A non-peer-reviewed paper shows that women get more requests accepted than men. In one subgroup, unblinding gender gives women a bigger advantage; in another subgroup, unblinding gender gives men a bigger advantage. When gender is unblinded, both men and women do worse; it’s unclear if there are statistically significant differences in this regard. Only one of the study’s subgroups showed lower acceptance for women than men, and the size of the difference was 63% vs. 64%, which may or may not be statistically significant. This may or may not be related to the fact, demonstrated in the study, that women propose bigger and less useful changes on average; no attempt was made to control for this. This tiny amount of discrimination against women seems to be mostly from other women, not from men.

>The media uses this to conclude that “a vile male hive mind is running an assault mission against women in tech.”

>Every time I say I’m nervous about the institutionalized social justice movement, people tell me that I’m crazy, that I’m just sexist and privileged, and that feminism is merely the belief that women are people so any discomfort with it is totally beyond the pale. I would nevertheless like to re-emphasize my concerns at this point.
>>
This conclusion was actually reached through very questionable methods (seethe original preprint).

The original hypothesis was that women's contributions would be rejected more often. It was not supported by the data. Then the researchers started looking for some way to justify their initial hypothesis in the face of this data. After multiple failed attempts they discovered thatin one specific situation(if the gender is obviousandthe woman is not a long-term contributor to the project) women's contributions appear to be rejected more often. Note that they used a heuristic to check whether the gender is obvious or not. They immediately assumed without any further research that it is due to gender bias. They didn't even consider what other factors could be at play, as they did when their initial results appeared to disprove their hypothesis. They didn't try to explain in any way why contributions arealwaysrejected more often if the gender is obvious — whether male or female. Yet their graph clearly shows it.

Given such flaws, I don't think it's a good idea to promote this preprint as it is in any case.

In the discussion of the paper it says something about how women who contribute to opensource projects are more likely to have masters and bachelor degrees than males. So rather women being better than men at programming (like the article says) it's just that women who complete their degrees and contribute to opensource are more compotent.

Anecdotally this somewhat matches my exprience at university where the few females all seemed interested in computer science or software engineering, while a large portion of males just wanted to make video games.

the title seems to suggest women in general have some inherent advantage.

but emale CS majors appear more likely to achieve an MA or PhD compared to their male counterparts. A larger proportion of the graduating classes for MA and PhD in CS recipients are female in comparison to BS degree of the same for 2010-2011 academic year in US.

4968[males with MA in CS]/7983[males with BS in CS]=0.62
1623[females with MA in CS]/1057[females with BS in CS]=1.53

1154[males with PhD in CS]/7983[males with BS in CS]=0.14
261[females with PhD in CS]/1057[females with BS in CS]=0.25

http://archive2.cra.org/uploads/documents/resources/taulbee/CS_Degree_and_Enrollment_Trends_2010-11.pdf

So it's conceivable that females that participate in CS tend to have higher IQ correlating with higher educational attainment.
Or at least they're may be more likely to receive more formal training than their male counterparts.

They likely didn't... That's the problem

Some people commit shit code, irrespective of gender
Some people want everyone to know they're wimminz codas, even women hate these types
Some people are pandering and patronising to women, so they'll accept whatever
Some people didn't want to see sexist, so they only use there big boy judgement with male coders
I can keep going.

Also, they dismissed all results from well known (mostly male) coders, so the best male coders were excluded from this study.

Basically this is the most bullshit feminist study of 2016, it's so bad reddit and 4chan agree. It's so bad even feminists are raging against it, it's just a horrible study done by some sincerely intellectually dishonest people.
