It's nice, but you can't switch Ctrl and Fn in it, which fucking sucks. It took me over 6 months to get used to it. I have normal Crtl/Fn layout on my Thinkpad that I use when I'm outside.

At first I thought island keys would suck, but it turns out I can type on it as fast or even faster than on the original high thinkpad keyboard.

With my huge monitor power consumption is the key. With everything hooked up my RPI2 setup draws under 40 W of electricity. If I used my thinkpad with that monitor it would draw 70+ W. I dpn't want to think about my PC and microwave oven.

qpdfview seemed nice, but it ate my entire ram once I tried to zoom in. Okular is fine for most PDFs, but when they consist of high quality images, it takes ages for the application to load next pages.

Most convenient way is to use kweb3 browser.
It comes with omxplayergui.
Just visit any video site, navigate to video and hit play button. The video will open in movable omxplayer video and stream with any quality.
Of course 1080p video might be too much for RPI's weak ethernet, but you can always buffer ahead.

If you can live only with linux, then sure.
I need to boot windows from time to time just because I won't get Office 2010 to run on ARM.
For budget work processing machine, RPI2 is good enough in my opinion. Hell, you can use it as a terminal and connect to VM's that are running on the server.

Yes it does.
RPI2 with proper configuration, debian and correct overclock gives you decent performance.
To play videos use software that can utilize the GPU. With no hardware acceleration you will need all 4 cores to play videos.

Use this on RPI1

Read how to overclock this shit, test if it's stable and then read how to configure your system to work fast. Default config is not that fast at all.
Upgrade your firmware.
I bough MPEG codec from their fucking store so that I could watch some of my downloaded videos faster.
Try opening the video using kweb3 and report back. Same thing for Iceweasel. I'm curious how will you perform.
>>
>>52919649
And set up correct memory split. I have 128MB for gpu. The overclock setup posted higher is not the best my RPI can do, but I wanted it to be stable. I had some problems with 1100Mhz setup but later it turned out the problem was caused by pulseaudio, not the overclock itself.

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/sda1 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=noop rootwait

Don't touch root=
if you are booting from SD card.
And check our the I/O speed of your SD card. My guess is that your SD card is slow as fuck and that's it. As for the Firefox/Iceweasel I have NoScript enabled to block excessive javascripts on some sites.

Even when you do need to use a larger computer, you should have access to more powerful machines at an academic facility.
Whenever I needed to run simulations at university, I'd just SSH into the department server from my laptop and run them on their machines.

Broadcom requires a firmware blob to boot the CPU. Therefore it is a dead end. Don't waste your time with it.

Plus they also "enable" their shit.
>>
>>52908071

I think RPi2 is getting pretty close as a desktop replacement for many light-weight uses.

The CPU speed and RAM are pretty close to sufficient now.

The big remaining obstacle is the slowness of the SD card flash. If they can get that upgraded in the next generation (maybe add some on-board NAND?), I think that will balance out the system nicely and we'll have a feasible low-end desktop.

For the ports, I would say the one obvious omission is SATA. I think RPi will probably need to add SATA in the next release because a number of their competitors already have it.

tl;dr -- I think about one more year and RPi should finally have all the pieces in place to be a true low-end desktop replacement.
>>
>>52923556

The open source drivers don't replace the giant blob. You still need the blob for accessing RAM, booting, USB... it's essentially firmware for the entire SoC. There's another project to replace the blob itself but it's probably four or five years away from being useful.

Good hub gives you more power than regular usb charger. Check out my hub that I have posted in this thread. For best protection move your system to usb stick or hdd and set boot partition on SD card to be read only. Thanks to that the files won't get corrupted on sudden power loss.

You can see the rainbow square in the corner, right? Your rpi needs more power. Also powering power hungry devices directly from the pi is a bad idea. My logilink hub gives 5V 3A of power and it can give power to an ssd, rpi, keyboard, trackball, usb stick, external hdd, 2 gamepads and a running smartphone. Every combination of devices work and my RPI has overvoltage set to 4v.

I cant really seem to find anything better that
>>
>>52928480
For a good price at least, I dont want to spend a fortune on this thing

Plus I know Amazonbasics stuff is good
>>
>>52928480

Oh no, you've destroyed every single Linux user's hopes and dreams! They use something that's free! They must not be able to afford a Microsoft (TM) Windows (TM) Genuine Experience (TM)!

Seriously though, how is a bloated as fuck Windows installation going to fit on and run well on a Rasperry Pi?
>>
>>52908071
I've considered hooking mine up on my bed for ultimate lazy fatass just-woke-up shitposting, but I don't feel like dropping so much on monitor mount just for that
>>
>>52928582
Ups. This looks like a charger. I have Unitek that looks the same but has a usb slot on front to connect to the PC.
>>
>>52928631
The point of having a stationary device is that you have to leave the bed and wake up to do anything. Staying in bed kills productivity.
>>
>>52928582
Just bought one of these, its in the mail

Thanks anon you rock

Pain in the neck.

Mainly because I have a shit tier pillow and also probably scoliosis
>>
>>52928698
Have you checked if it's a USB hub or a wall charger? The device from my link is a wall charger. My mistake. You want the one like in my pic, with a micro usb slot.
>>
I want to use a raspberry pi as a NAS/server to store backups on. Is there an easy way to have SATA drives in raid on there?

>>
>>52928758
its a USB hub thats powered from the wall, what I needed
I dont need the Micro USB slot, I have a nice enough cable
The USB hub has ports for 2.4A USB devices, so itll work out
>>
best 50 dollary doo hickey mini pc?
>>
>>52928989
How will you transfer data from the hub to the RPI if there is no communication usb cable comming from the hub? If you only want to charge rpi from it than it's fine but you are wasting 5 usb ports.
>>
>>52928989
Please send us a link to the one you have bought. I don't want to see you raging aboit your wrong purchase on /g/ in near future.

>>
>>52929238
Yeah, you are fucked. You bought a wall charger with 6 usb slots, not a usb hub.
>>
>>52928781
stop, just get something better

rpi is total shit at it and super fucking slow for anything I/O based
>>
>>52929284
Well I just cancelled it soooo no biggie :)

Guess Ill keep looking

Electricity costs money. Running a tower PC to read a pdf file or create a text file is retarded.
>>
>>52929315
Cool. I'm going to bed. Will be back in 2.5 hours.

Have a nice... nap?

Thanks for the help

Lol my athlon 5350,8gb ram, 240ssd, 23inch dell led 1080p draws about 55w full load. Probably less than 30 at idle. The extra 10w seems worth having an actual computer.
>>
>>52927781
i used 3.5mm 4 pole from an old video camera, just had to hunt and peck at the right ones to hook up (for some reason, the ones i have use Red as the video signal, but it works)
>>
>>52929373
my C2D draws 0 watts when unplugged!

Larger monitors draw more power, you know?
>>
>>52929316
That's a difference of a handful of dollars per year. Your monitor will be consuming far more power than your PC, be it an intel desktop or a raspi.

Calculate how much you're saving in energy per year, then calculate how much time you spend waiting for the raspi to perform tasks that would be done instantly on a more powerful machine. I guarantee that if you have a job, even at minimum wage, the time savings will outweigh the energy savings.

And that doesn't even touch the benefits of not gimping yourself to shit like 360p videos.

tldr; people who think this is saving them money are real tight jews.

"However, when comparing the results to newer Broadwell and Bay Trail processors, not only was the modern Intel hardware faster but it was also more power efficient than the two tested Raspberry Pi development boards."

I need large monitor space, ok?
2 smaller monitors draw more power than 1 40'' monitor. Are we clear?
I don't want to explain to you why having 2windows opened side by side boosts productivity. If you were a programmer you would know.
>>
>>52929438
>then calculate how much time you spend waiting for the raspi to perform tasks that would be done instantly on a more powerful machine.

I can see no difference on task that I perform on my RPI. I'm not rendering videos on it you bloody fool.
>>
>>52929438
Also 1
You can stream videos in higher quality. Thanks fot reading the thread
Also 2
Rpi with an SSD is 100% silent. The silence helps me concentrate.
>>
>>52929486
How much do they cost, dildo?
>>
>>52929438
Oh yeah, and I don't live in a fucking Murrica and I don't have dollars to waste. Electricity costs money. We don't have nuclear power plants.

Gex

Gex the gecko 1 on PSX.
I also play Rayman 2 right now.
There do many retro games you can run on rpi that i will have enough games for the rest of my life. Modern games are shit anyway. This is not /v/ so let me stop at that.
>>
>>52929750
is this retroPie ?
>>
>>52930040
nope, retropie works without X
>>
>>52916154
Doesn't bug me, not really into video content. Honestly I just want one because it's MIPS-based, I'd probably end up running it headless.
