just download some books from https://thepiratebay.se and print them for free.
If you're a student you can take a pic of the index and put the entire dead tree into your locker and "borrow" the chapters you need in class.
You can use the index to determine what chapter you should borrow.

I'm one of those guys that can't stand reading on tablets, I like the physical thing.
>>
>>52907108
I don't mind, the teacher demanded physical copies to prevent piracy.
So i printed a 872 page book with school's printers, 436 duplex sheets rolled out in 20 minutes.
it would normally cost €0,05 for each duplex sheet, but it's free if you know the admin password for the printers.
>>
>>52907144
>the teacher demanded physical copies to prevent piracy.
This is actually a thing?

None of my professors ever gave a shit if we even actually had the book.
>>
>>52907236
Not really demanded, but rather suggested they want to see that you don't have a shady pdf.
I remember how i couldn't stop smiling like an idiot while walking into the classroom with €20 of prints under my arm.
>>

What kind of University do you go to? I've never seen a class that insists that you have a book in print.

Hell I've even seen schools that allow you to rent the textbooks for free in their own library.

I understand the value of learning LISP, but what if I want to devote a proper amount of time to learning it, but not before I learn some other language first? I want to be enlightened when I switch to lisp, if I just learn coding with it, I'll miss out on the good feeling everybody describes. Should I still read these?

mythical man month is considered a must read in industry - parts can (are) dated so you kinda have to connect some parts to real life on your own.

My personal favorite is Artificial Intelligence, a Modern Approach, I've learned more from that than any other text.

To Mock a Mocking Bird is good adjacent-to-comp-sci reading.

Some have already mentioned SICP, for me it was one of the most enlightening books I've read.

Other ones I've really liked are

>Okasaki - Purely Functional Data Structures
>Pierce - Types and Programming Languages
>Peyton Jones - The Implementation of Functional Programming Languages

I'm mainly interested in type systems and FP, so obviously I'm biased. There are a lot of other books that I've found interesting.

My main advice? Start reading papers. Don't really matter about which field (inside CS though). You'll quickly learn about what interests you. I started with Lamport's Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System, and went from there

Not really a lot of requirements to understand the text, though there are some exercises which require familiarity with proof by induction and stuff like that. Not hard, but if you've never heard of it...

That's only a small part of it though.

Also, the book can have some parts that are hard to understand. Take your time, and watch the lectures (on YouTube for free, they're awesome)

Thanks anon, I recently stumbled upon the MIT course classes, I'm going to watch them over the weekend.

This thread does not need a bump, please. Lets just put this to rest.

Because the MIT press version is HTML. The version on GitHub is a PDF, and a very good one at that

That depends on what you want to do. If you're a beginner, I'd recommend Learn Java the Hard way. It'll give you a good foundation in programming.

Don't confuse it with Learn Python the Hard Way, it's written by a different author and the Java one is way better for beginners.
