/SQT/ Stupid Questions Thread
Old thread hit bump limit.
Post your stupid/simple questions here so a new thread won't have to be made for it. Redirect any anons here that post questions/tech support threads outside of /sqt/. Make an attempt to google before asking. Don't bump, you are not entitled to an answer.

I am trying to decide where to start on my journey to code stuff. More a "why not", than an actual reason or goal. However there are a lot of varieties on the back side I need to consider. As such I am trying to identify core questions I need to answer, before I even start asking questions. That help cut down on stupid questions.
Anyone seen some big flowcharts covering these types of things, or how to better break down and identify things? Here is what I got so far.
What Language? (C++, Java, PHP, ...)
What Interface? (CLI, TUI, GUI, ...)
What Editor? (Code Blocks, Emacs, Vim, Visual Studio, ...)
What License? (Free, FOSS, GPL, Open, Propitiatory, ...)
What Goal? (Make game, Control robot, Get job, Become power user, ...)
What Life Expectancy? (Big thing for a now, never going to die, standard for next 10 years, ...)
What Market Size? (Only runs one device, runs on everything, …)
What Support? (active community, one dude not dead yet, abandoned years ago, …)

I'd give you my Dreamspark one, but I'm already using it.
My laptop had 3 out of 4 USB ports not working so I sent it to tech support and the guy told me he had never seen bad USB ports on a laptop. As I had the same problem with my old (non laptop) computer, I wonder, is this just anecdotal evidence of him, do I have bad luck, or did I mistreat these ports somehow? I dont remember doing anything bad with them... I mean sure sometimes I would plug out stuff without the safety thing, but not that many times really.

i have $250 USD to spend in amazon credit, i want to get an ssd (I'm thinking the 850 evo 250gb) and either 2x 1tb hdds or 1x 2tb hdd to keep games on. (i currently have a 120gb kingston ssd and 4tb wd red for storage but my load times are atrocious with only 5400rpm)
is windows software raid 0 worth it for a purely gaming drive, or am i better off with just getting a single drive? also, which brand should i get?
>>52886260
The only thing I know of is paging issues that you could get. Basically many systems use part of the hard drive as RAM over flow and error protection. Some setups can be hurt by it others would never notice the difference. If you never max out your RAM then people say you would be fine, other say to keep double your RAM amount free at all times. Some setups directly allocate the space (usually named Swap or Paging) others just use empty space as needed.
I leave between 1 or preferably 4GB of flex space as I am very paranoid and rarely get close to maxing my stuff.

Is it possible to boot a pc from an external HD? If so, will it be slower?
>>52887333
Thanks anon. Looks too complex for me....
>>52887382
On Windows, this is not possible. Technically it is, but Microsoft doesn't want you to, so made it impossible. Same for Apple's OS.
On most Linux distro's it should work fine. I know this for sure for all Debian-based distro's. An external harddisk will be recognized and usable just like it's an internal harddisk. I don't think Linux makes a difference between these types of harddisks.
Just recently got a test and development server for a small company i work for but i'm new to this whole sysadmin thing.

I want to watch my Futurama DVDs on my laptop but I can't.
Whenever I insert the disc, the drive spins up for under a second, then makes monotonous clicking noises. Trying to open up the disc directory in explorer takes ages and ends with explorer telling me there is no disc in the drive. Trying to play the disc via VLC also doesn't work, it produces the same errors as when no disc is found.
The DVDs can be played fine on a DVD player.
I can watch other DVDs on my laptop, just not these.
Reinstalling the drivers for the drive achieved nothing.
Is this due to some funky copy protection shenanigans or what?

Can anyone explain to me why JavaScript is being shoehorned into everything lately?
My theories:
>JavaScript developers are a dime a dozen, so using it everywhere reduces cost
>It's being optimized and developed out the ass by big companies like Google (as opposed to nonprofits) for those sweet sweet adbux
>Some self-proclaimed "guru"s declared that JavaScript was the wave of the future, and San Francisco ate it up (like they did with Smalltalk)
>Prototypical inheritance makes it hard to dig yourself into holes like you can in languages with classes and makes many patterns easy
Is there something I'm missing?

No idea. It indicates either an infection of their advertising system or a serious security breach in the client itself. Either way it's fucked and you should bad for using Vuze anyway.

Hi /g/
Is skylake still a meme? I want to build a workstation PC that will last me at least a couple of years and i have a tight budget for one, which is around 1200 euro(1350 usd ATM) I mainly work with 3dsmax and the adobe suite (ps, illustrator)
My thoughts were:
i5 6600k, some msi overclocked gtx970, some asus motherboard with 4 ddr4 slots for upgrades, 16 gigs of ddr4 ram, samsung evo 850 250gig ssd, 2tb wd black hard drive, a decent-ish psu, of course, some cheap ass case and probably a cpu cooler because i think that i'd like to overclock my processor.
Is ddr4 neccessary if i want this pc to be upgradable in the future? Is skylake a meme and should i consider the i7 6700k? any input is welcome.

>>52889179
If you buy Haswell and DDR3 the only thing you need to upgrade is the GPU. You would have to buy DDR4 for the next build. If you buy DDR4 by the time you need to upgrade the CPU you should expect to buy a new mobo and RAM anyways. In both cases you should only upgrade the GPU and buy a new CPU/RAM/Mobo when your current is outdated

Hypothetically, say you were going to bait pedophiles with pictures of kids on omegle or something by acting like a kid, get them to reveal information about themselves, and then blackmail them to keep their secret (say like $500).
How would you go about getting them to transfer you money anonymously, so that on the off chance you couldn't be tracked down by the pedophile or police?

Then you split it 50/50 with your cousin. you're working for $1.20/hr
Thats assuming you always catch 2 pedos a week.

Its gonna be used for inventory managing and light gaming, things like Warrframe and MechWarrior Online at high-ish 1080p, expecting 60fps

I'm new to Linux, I know when you pick a distro it comes with a pre-installed DE and some programs, like how Kubuntu comes with Dolphin, Gwenview, etc. If you installed another DE manually does it come with any progams, or just the DE itself? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on the package manager. Are you planning on installing KDE on Mint?
>>52891184
Looks fine but get a 144mhz monitor
>>52891235
Not that was just an example off the top of my head, I know there's a KDE version of Mint anyways. I guess maybe a better example would be if you're setting up something like LFS or Arch, that comes with nothing out of the box, and you install the DE, do you have the typical default apps as well or just the raw DE? Or are there options for both, or does it depend on the DE?

LFS doesn't have a package manager, AFAIK.
In Arch, there's a meta-package called plasma-meta with 24 packages included, and another just called plasma with 32 packages, then just the desktop as plasma-desktop.
I think it just depends on the package manager.

When building a custom water cooling rig and having no experience on it, what are some good resources to learn from (besides YouTube)
Specifically id like to learn about:
-if there are complications to do with the fittings, like I see there are compressor fittings and aren't sure where or when they're important
-how many water blocks is too many in a small system
-what kind of water pressure/flow/amounts are necessary, again I don't know much here
-if pump/reservoir Combos are bad
-if general fit graphics processor-only gpu water blocks are bad
-how large a reservoir I need
-how beefy a pump I'll need
-if there are clear soft tubes to go between fittings
-what the risk of leaking is
-can loctite can be used on the fittings
-if a cpu and gpu are in the same loop and one is significantly hotter than the other, will thus heat up the other unit in the system, and vice versa
-in a small system are single radiators viable
Please and thank you

I'm no expert, but I'll help
>how many water blocks is too many in a small system
Your only limit is how many connections you want to make
>what kind of water pressure/flow/amounts are necessary, again I don't know much here
As long as you get the right pump you're fine
>if pump/reservoir Combos are bad
Generally ok if you don't want to spend $500+ to do it correctly
>if general fit graphics processor-only gpu water blocks are bad
Only if you forget to put heatsinks on the vrm and ram
>how large a reservoir I need
Not much, the size is mostly for show
>how beefy a pump I'll need
iirc d5 pumps are good enough for most loops
>if there are clear soft tubes to go between fittings
Most people use soft tubing
>what the risk of leaking is
Minor if you maintain it, make sure to leak test before putting it on your system
>can loctite can be used on the fittings
That's retarded
Don't do that
>if a cpu and gpu are in the same loop and one is significantly hotter than the other, will thus heat up the other unit in the system, and vice versa
Yes, but it won't matter as long as your radiators can dissipate it
>in a small system are single radiators viable
Yes, but not advised if you have multiple components or you're overclocking with a single 120/140mm rad

HOW THE FUCK DO I FIX THIS SHITTY BROKEN MKV FILE!? It plays *flawlessly* in VLC and Bomi, but whenever I try to put it in an editor or converter, the program shits the bed and I can't do anything with it.
I have tried Meteorite, MKVToolNix, and OrcasMKVFix1.2; all programs which are supposed to easily repair minorly broken MKV files like this. All of them produce "repaired" files that play back just as easily as the original, even though I still cannot edit them in any video converters/snippers.
I seriously give up on repairing the original file. It seems to be broken forever, despite playing back perfectly. Is there just some free, non-adware utility I can use that will 100% record my media player's screen playing the file, without dropping ANY frames or losing any quality? Damn, holy fuck. I should be fine then, But yeah, do most higher end supplies have more PCIe connectors? I never really dealt with much power supplies.

>>> single slot
Could this really be true?

Yeah, and higher end variations of certain cards sometimes have more than the reference cards too. They've even got modular ones where you only need to have the cables you use plugged in.

That's a single slot card but it has a dual slot fan. If you've got the space go for it m8, any better card than that will have a PCIe power connector which might be an issue with whatever the shit you're trying to put that in.

Ahh, okay. I knew about modular so I'm not that behind. Just the cards that require more plug ins. Which version of 980 ti is the best to upgrade to? EVGA's Classified and Gigabyte's G1 seem really good.

>Which version of 980 ti is the best to upgrade to?
Depends on your preferences, some people want quiet shit, some people want ones with higher clocks, etc. I always use TPUs review database to help find reviews to compare shit though.

I've got an EVGA card atm though, I got it since they used to have limited lifetime warranties. Shit works gr8.

Still haven't bought them so I still have time to reconsider. Ultrastar costs 3 times as much here with only double the capacity so I might as well buy a few Seagates for replacement when they go down.
Hey there, /sqt/
I'm wanting to make a small grid based game in visual studio. Looking to make it like minesweeper, sort of, but the bombs are moving towards a player and they have to dodge them. Anyone know some tuts?
If I have a rooted Android phone, will it still tell me when there's an available OTA update?

Do you know how to program? If not, learn how to program. Then you will learn what a stupid question this is.
is there a better option than convertxtodvd for converting .avi, .mkv, and .mp4 files to dvd format and burning them with the press of a button? looking for something that will max out my 4770k, it is only hitting 50% when only converting one title on convertxtodvd
