i look out for things that look promising and i noticed a computer with the blue usb ports

took it home and ripped it apart, cheap-ass asus b85, 8 gigs of ddr3, and an i7 4770

powered it on and it was rebooting every few mins, there was a bios update though so i updated it and it was fine

also found a minitx with an i5 but that mobo is fried, i would need to replace it an actually spend money so it's in the mobo in a box somewhere

also:

dell at-101 old school crappy mech keyboard
cisco 2060 (nice for poe cams and phones i guess)
wd5003 black
8-port pci-e hardware raid card with the cables

So I found this giant pile of old dell optiexes that my school had thrown out near the garbage shoot on the first floor. I normally just walk by it, but I saw one of them open and just saw a CPU lying their on the mobo. I took it out and saw it was an e7600.

Not bad.

I tried to find some others with open tops and managed to find two more open cpus after tearing off the heatsinks. They were covered in thermal paste so I did not get to take a look at the name. I assumed it would also be e7600s.

I was thoroughly disappointed to see that these core 2 duos only ran for $5. Less than shipping it out flat rate. Got home and cleaned them off. Behold two i5-3570k's.

Gonna go back Tuesday to see if I can find some more.

Nothing insanely interesting, most things of "interest" I pick up are usually personal information like tax forms, financial information, addresses and other stuff. When I was just getting into collecting I picked up a 486 with a shit ton of SSNs from a hospital, and this little shitbox had some spreadsheets on it with the full names and addresses of what seemed like every fucking registered democrat in the state. Sometimes you find porn as well, picked up a T22 last Monday that belonged to some YMCA coordinator and had a "misc" folder full of anal and scat in the documents directory. Favorite so far was a 700 series ThinkPad with a bunch of perfectly preserved early 2000s milf sites in the temp folder and some neat ballistics/hunting software.

Probably the weirdest shit I dig up are personal journals, which almost always tend to be on Macs. My favorites were a Performa 6300 owned by an Alaskan crab fisherman and a Quadra 700 full of some old woman's sexually frustrated ramblings.

dunno if you've looked around much, I found this but it's not much, might be a good start though if you haven't tried:
>The Nidec/Power General Indy power supply (SGI P/N 9430813) is one of the most frequently failed components (along with hard disk drives >and monitors), and because of the complexity of the power supply, repair shops willing to try to repair them are very hard, if not impossible >to find. Swapping power supplies is probably the least expensive option.
>There was a post on Usenet recently about repairing the Nidec Indy power supplies, P/N 9430813. Here is the text of that post, by Fernando Teixeira
>1- Check the electrolitic capacitor C1(1uF 400V) and the resistor R5, is the most frequently failure in that power supply.
>2- Check the diode D14 (2 diodes on a TO220 case) and D11, they fails often.

It's a problem in any developed first world country.
We live in a (mostly) wasteful society.
Most people understand that paper, plastic, etc. can be recycled, but the thought of scrapping electronics for recycling doesn't occur to most.
It would help if it was advertised more.
>>
Here they don't even allow you to throw electronics away. If you leave them in the garbage they refuse to pick them up. Nice way to force a flow of money to the recycling centers that are profiting big time. This also encourages people to sell good items off for pennies though as opposed to the added hassle of taking them to a recycling center so I suppose it evens out.

I got an old Pentium 4 that was about to go in the dumpster at work here while back. The office manager had me take the HD out and drill holes in it, in exchange for letting me have it. That's cool though, I've got a bunch of old IDE drives lying around.

The thing had XP on it, and it was extremely slow. They had me occasionally clean the bullshit off of it, so I know from experience. I installed OpenBSD 5.7 and Xfce on it. It's not an amazing system, but for browsing the web or doing some light shit it's perfectly good. XP was the problem, not the PC itself.

Oh my college never threw them out. Like I said, they held auctions.
Smaller business owners would show up looking for some cheap and usable computers. Shit like that.
If they can't shift them, then they pull out all the RAM and CPUs, and sell them on eBay..Rest of it goes off to a recycling centre.
Cases are sold for scrap. What little value there is to them.

Right, but the other side of that coin is warranty.

Fortune 500 companies throw away thousands of 3-5 year old servers simply because they're no longer in warranty.

Usually the cost analysis break even point is n-2. Anything 3 generations back is due to be replaced.

That's exactly what my PC was, with a Radeon 4850, and it was still an excellent PC that could suit most peoples' needs.

I had to retire it because it couldn't handle the latest games, couldn't really handle PS2/Wii emulators, and couldn't do Twitch streaming all very well due to the dual-core processor and old video card.

But if none of that meant anything for you, it's still JUST AS FAST as a new machine for everyday uses.

Q6600 vs i5 2500

I5 wins with:
IVX
AES
SSE4.1/4.2
Turbo boost

DDR3 - increased memory bandwidth
Increased memory density
Increased yield and availability

Sure, a Q6600 + SSD is fine for shitposting, but it's not cost effective to maintain old equipment.

Nigga, they are going to usually be kept in a utility space/room that is typically near by the loading/unloading areas for vehicles. This is done to allow the piles of computers/tech that are being tossed out to be done easily without much trouble moving from the ground to the vehicle.

Most college buildings have a garage-like door either on the side or in the back. If you can find access to said room from within the building, you will be able to find the stash ready to be moved out.

As someone who works for a major business I've learnt most businesses are obligated to lock their equipment away, whatever state it may be in. We pay a third party company to lift our old tech as they dispose of it the way it should be.
Small businesses who think they can throw out parts like they throw out other rubbish are naive targets.
>>
>>52854556
And those naive people are most likely to underestimate the value of the discarded tech so i would like to take their tech instead of searching through an insanely large building or campus to find that one room which may contain stuff i'm willing to use.

It's legal everywhere in the US under the third-party doctrine. Trespassing is a different issue, but they legally have to warn you that you are on private property via a sign or verbally. If there are no signs then you're good. If they call the cops, all the cops will do is "trespass" you, which is just a warning not to come back.

And now instead of just forming an internet club around this garbage, you have to check for laws and you might go to jail for theft before you even get there.

I recall 60s movement videos of hippies who just opened a commune in central park, I love how it's acceptable to put emotion and feelings onto private property, "but it was going to be thrown out anyway!". "nobody was using it anyway!".

Even if that is true
>people with jobs THREW THIS SHIT OUT.

What you want - visit a thrift store or recycling center that sells things, since they usually turn it on to see if it works and you can get it for almost nothing before spending hours looking up documents on how to fix everything. Or maybe you want it to be broken to soak up your time, I dunno.

While I'm sure this is bait, we have six computers at my actual job, which is a legal and revenue generating company with several employees, and every single one of them came out of the trash. The sony CRT projectors from the VPH-12XX series on up (so no, not my old dumpster one) had IFBs (interface boards) where you could swap in various types of connectors. This one was made by a third party company years after Sony stopped production.

Some of these projectors could do like 2500x2000 at 140Hz and had 9 inch liquid coupled tubes. Having 2x 1997 Sony G90U's converged to show the same image (for beyond-normal CRT brightness) is probably the best projector image quality money can buy for a home theater. The black levels and contrast are outstanding
