I bought, and returned the V-moda M-100s because one of the ear cushions was sewn on crooked. If it's worth it and there aren't better alternatives, I may just buy them again.

If you have an iPhone you can set up Activator to play/pause on a command you chose. I have volume up/down held skip/rewind track and double press home button plays/pause. That way I can control my music with the phone still on my pocket
You can do that on Android too but they generally lack a home button.
I'm not sure if buying a pair of headphones with a detachable cable and buying an aftermarket cable with inline controls would work.

Don't like any IEM as is. 4S is pretty insensitive, and I equalize it already. It's not like MK5 lacks treble extension in comparison, and it is cheaper.
I had the ER-4 first, but I sent it away since I already had another passable IEM after EQ. That fell apart, so I picked up MK5.

I wouldn't say the headphones at that tier outperform the usual recommended stuff near $1k though. Most people would probably prefer something like the HE-560 or LCD-2 if budget is not an issue.

Anyway, I've always been averse to saying a certain headphone outperforms most other headphones above it, since the only ones that we care about are the top performing headphones.
The $200-300 tier is just the big diminishing returns area with lots of good competition, so naturally it gets the most shitposting. Maybe it'll be DT880's turn again to be the popular recommendation, we had the HD600 recently and K702 now.

The main problem with HD600 is that Sennheiser are jews about pricing, so it's rare for them to get extended low prices or sales. I think it's been a while but DT880 gets more popular every now and then, usually when people ask for more bass in that range.

The HD600 and HD650 are pretty much coasting on their reputation as "classics," but yeah I never understood why Senn can't update the build quality from the cheap tacky 90s marble stuff.
On the other hand, HD800 is pretty much the only recent flagship success out of the big three manufacturers, and it's had pretty good pricing whenever it's gone near ~$1000 recently. Of course for the new HD800S you would probably have to wait years for a similar good discount.

I'm not saying they're bad but lets be honest. The popularity has more to do with who's wearing them and not so much the quality of it.
They're like $1300 low end. Not like they're using that great of materials in the build. When I first saw them I thought "cool a $700-$800 headphone to beat everything". And then I saw the price.

I don't own the HD800 myself, but I haven't heard many complaints about the build quality aside from maybe the paint. It's the only dynamic headphone over $1000 that is commonly recommended now, while the Tesla headphones and K812 flopped, so by that measure I think it's a success.

How about this? Buy the K553 Pro, a 3.5mm f to f connector, and some third party headphone cable w/remote, and kijigger them together in such a way that the entire length of the original cable is neatly coiled and zip-tied to the headband, leaving essentially just the cable with the remote?

I'm unironically suggesting the Skullcandy Grind. I got a chance to try on a pair at Bestbuy, and they were kinda nice. $55, and built surprisingly sturdy despite being so light on the head. Earpads were nice and cool, though they didn't block out that much noise. They sounded better than I remember any Skullcandy sounding before, including the old Lowrider.
