I improved my backup regimen though. now important stuff, in addition to being backed up regularly, also goes to a btrfs RAID1. The script takes a snapshot of it before rsyncing the data. Heh, you're right, I dont NEED a rackmount workstation to play games but I WANT a way to play my games at work while not being cucked by teamviewer since thats what I HAVE to use since I have a "gaming laptop" and no I cant bring that to work with me.

I mainly just use VM's to host services on my workstation. For anything that needs to be run persistently over a long time I have a few raspberry pi's and a VPS.

Yeah I feel you. The fat client only works with windows and that is kind of a pain in the ass if you don't have a windows machine to easily use, otherwise you are stuck going into a windows VM and then launching it from there.
They do have a preview version of the html5 client you can install. It's okay, you really can't do much in it and I get errors all the time from the browser. Apparently it's better to just keep it unregistered free trial instead of using a legit free license.
The only reason I say go with esxi is because in the workplace you are MUCH better off saying you have any sort of experience with that over anything else.

The airflow through them is what cools them. They're generally stacked right on top of each other in racks anyway. If you've got a single system and switch, then gravity is probably enough to keep them in place unless you're worried about sticky fingers.

I mean, if it's a Workstation that someone using a CAD program was supposed to RDP to, then why the O365. If it was a Workstation then why the rack mount? Dell is a private company now, not that this is the "downfall" of a once great, albeit successfully recovering in user-space, company, but it just shows some management not really looking after the products they're putting out.
Only logical thing I can think of is that there was a company (ie, 3-letter agency, Microsoft, Adobe) that had enough clout that wanted X-product so they developed it and thought that maybe someone else may have the same use case scenario.

Large infrequently accessed file storage including but not limited to TV shows, movies, game and software installers. Backing up important data for several systems. Hosting game servers.
And this goes along with the first point, but if you find yourself regularly building new systems or rebuilding old systems, formatting drives, etc. then it's extremely useful for deploying software instead of spending the time to download it every time you need it and/or storing installers on multiple systems. I don't see any particular reason you'd need a full rack at home. Even larger scale single home use can usually be easily handled by one or two sub $300 builds. For many people even a $100 NAS solution is more than enough.
While throwing together an old system with some new large capacity drives is great if you're on a budget, older server grade hardware is dirt cheap anyway and can often give you access to features beneficial to a server while also far outperforming a thrown together consumer grade system that's valued around the same. Power consumption will obviously be higher but in the case of a dual socket system this can be mitigated by using low power server CPUs. In the case of a single socket system if you use the same approach you'll likely have lower power consumption than a comparable consumer grade build with similar performance.
My dual 771 server should be going together within a week. I'm not entirely sure where I'll place it yet but the motherboard included the network based management card so if I want to later on I can run it as a headless server, even making BIOS changes over the network if needed. Exactly how much I can do and how useful it will turn out I have not yet fully explored but if nothing else I enjoy learning the software. Plus building a near silent server should be a nice change of pace from my usual performance oriented builds with little concern for sound.

Currently I have a 2TB portable drive hanging off my router.

Its meant to be a workstation for a user on the companies LAN or more common, in a remote location over the internet. Thats why its got windows 8/10 since its meant to essentially be a dedicated PC for one user.
I agree its odd of Dell but its better deal than anything else they sell by far.
Of course, its server grade hardware so it can be used in that fashion just the same but you can get much better deals on these "work stations" in the dell outlet.
The same money can buy a "server" but you miss out on a free $300+ quadro GPU and possibly a $250 PCoIP card.

It's not what I can't do, but more of what I can do efficiently. For some reason, a clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 causes a excessive amount of reads on the HDD the OS is on. No matter which drive that may be, it completely locks me out of ANY action for the first 2 minutes after startup (This is after a clean installation), and it seems I cannot run much without more lockups after that period is past. I did run Debian 7, and Ubuntu 14.04 (Desktop version. For a short while, I needed a desktop and this was my only option) on this thing a year back, and it never did this. All I need was something for smb, ftp and a place to manage 2 VMs for testing shit (Hell, I don't really need smb or ftp yet, as I still haven't set that up to work well in my new network environment.).

How do I install an OS on a PowerEdge 2600 (pic related)?
It won't boot from USB. I've tried booting from 3 different CD's with no luck. I've unplugged everything except the CD drive and the HDD board, still nothing. I've checked BIOS settings again and again, CD drive is set as bootable. PXE will be a pain in the ass (I'm using an EdgeRouter X, so PXE is CLI only, and fat-fingering it means potentially bringing the whole network down).

It was a gift from my employers. I realize a Gen8 Proliant would save me money and frustration, but I'm still waiting for Gen9. I wanted something cheap/free to cut my teeth on (I've never used anything with ECC or RAID>1 before). I need some advice on a distro.
I want a server for development. I want it to be my git server, I want it to host a gitlab frontend for my projects, I want it to host an irc bouncer, and I also want it to run all the different databases, languages and whatever else I'll throw at it.
I want to use Centos 7 if possible.
So what I did was, I downloaded the 4gig CentoS ISO off their home page. Installing this resulted in a monster of a distro (but probably not a bad one if I were to use myself) with tons of graphical packages, scheduled package updates that for some reason locked the package manager and god knows what else.
Where exactly can I get a Centos distro that comes with just what I need? I am only ever going to access this thing through ssh.

Odroid C1 running Debian jessie. lighttpd, tt-rss, murmur, ftp, rtorrent seedbox. It works well, except that it's fairly slow, perhaps due to the non-class 10 SD card being used for the OS.
Looking into a low-power (< 25W) anything for use as a NAS. I might just put Xen onto a cheap rack server and play around with that.
