1. They're students who probably were required to use them at their school because Universities are a hotbed for not only cultural marxism but also the Apple ideology after Apple (and yes, M$ ) paid off so many school administrators to use their shit.
2. The best hackers in the world don't work in groups, comrade. Most of them work independently and don't have time for bullshit competitions like this when they can make 6-figures working for a defense contractor or the government.
3. This shit isn't easy, nor is it "fun". Discovering exploits and writing software is a bitch to do and is the modern equivalent to mining coal. The best hackers in the world don't waste their time competing for bullshit prizes like this.

To be fair, there's no real alternative to MacBook in a professional field. Also it's pretty easy to install linux on it if you want but most people opt to stay on OS X since it already provides fancy and consistent unix environment.
