I think DX12 will prove to be as close to the metal as anyone cares to go, at least for this generation of hardware.

People don't do low level optimization anymore. Maybe we'll actually get some good drivers for Linux though.

Every modern graphics API other than Apple's is effectively Mantle 2.0.

If GPU Open 'fails' like Mantle did AMD will be in great shape.
