UNIX/Linux etc are OLD. All of the new 'features' of Linux/BSD are obtuse bolt ons trying very hard to deprecate the existing infrastructure. It's a mess.

OSX/NeXT was clever in using a microkernel/bsd subsystem to make new features more separate from the underlying system, and it's slowly breaking away from that subsystem, but it is a mess too.

UNIX is dead. Long live UNIX.
