Depends on the server.
You definitely need a firewall. Then close all ports you don't need.
Make sure your OS and installed packages are up to date.
If you're using SSH make sure that's secured.

This is a HD picture of the relevant part of my current network infrastructure.
I have the Raspberry Pi as a seedbox.
Problem is that my WiFi kills itself when it has many connections, so I have to limit the number of connections (15 nonetheless).
This results in absurdly low speeds.
Now, I'd like to add some hardware somewhere in the middle to have both my PC and the RPi connected via Ethernet.
I could take the Ethernet cable out of my PC and connect it to a router, but I don't know if the 'primary' router will still be able to forward ports to the RPi if I do that.
