Hey /g/uys, I'm pretty new to Mac OS X and the whole concept. I've got to know some basic key shortcuts and gestures.
I have a MacBook Air 13", Early 2015, using it for notes at school and coding.
What efficiency/productivity increasing tips, apps or obscure shortcuts do you use? Also, any ideas on how to prevent overheating when running CPU-intensive apps?

iTerm 2
Brew
OS X is only good if you use it as you would any other UNIX machine.
I'm a fan of coda for front-end dev
also transmit (same development company)
keyboard maestro can be used to make any keyboard shortcuts for anything you fucking want.
totalfinder used to be great but since OS X started doing hidden "security" shit, it's become somewhat less useful.
homebrew is absolutely necessary if you want to do any development.
if you do front-end web dev, there's an iOS simulator built-in to XCode, you just have to find it and make a shortcut then BOOM, free access to any iOS device ever made... real emulation.
for overheating, do away with the "IT NEEDS 2 B QUIET!!!1" shit and install SMCFanControl and set more realistic fan/temp combos. it won't be dead-silent, but it won't burn you anymore.
ShiftIt is a cool app to move things between workspaces easily.
LittleSnitch is a good firewall app
read the hack for setting up a TimeMachine backup on any network storage device

ofc, and I will enjoy magnetic storage for that price
>Cinch
Allows for Windows-style window tiling.
As others have already said, Homebrew is a must. It's an excellent package manager.
For ricing, you can use cDock to edit the appearance of your dock.
XtraFinder is also a good addition for customizing finder.
Get Alfred. It's a million times better than spotlight.
Also consider bartender for cleaning up your bar.

I rice Windows, Linux, and OSX alike for more usability. If you don't, you're likely a simpleton.

Bootcamp, then install Gentoo.

got alfred, it's useful for starting or quitting apps and searching. Currency and/or SI units are better calculated in Spotlight
