so it seems that Gabe tried to lay the ground work with steam for GNU/linux and porting all Valve games but then no other developers followed suit. They just chose to be assholes instead.

Steam has enough money and engineers to do all the devwork on their own.

Costs money to get games working on linux. More than you'd get back from people buying the linux versions of the games.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

No devs are going to go back and make a linux version of a game they already made BANK money on and are already working on something else.No one is on Linux for games less than !% you actally think devs are goign to take that risk with no shows?

Only devs working on present games can "follow suit", else they are wasting time and money.
Porting old games must be done by a 3rd party who gets the approval from license holders, but seeing as copyright is so fucking cancerous and most license owners are EA types while devs are mostly dead, most the games will never get approval.

everything not labeled windows can run on Linux, however whats the point is linux is less than 1% of the computer on steam?
>>

I used to think Linux was the future of gaming. I seriously thought Steamboxes would replace consoles in the near future and set a new standard.

But I was wrong, Linux hasn't really gained any momentum in the past year in terms of gaming, they were all following Valve's lead and it hit a wall since then.

It had so much potential but since Valve is such an incompetent company they couldn't make the push hard enough.
>>
>Hey guys, you know how we develop our games for Windows because 90% of computer owners utilize it?
>Yeah
>Let's spend a bunch of money porting to a platform we've never used before, that less than 1% of computer owners have installed. We'll make so much money. Like that time that Valve ported Steam over to OS X. We all know how successful that was at destroying Windows' gaming market share.
