Tell me why this would not be best cheap NAS/server build ever.

That's why

That's no problem

>using a raspi to control multiple harddisks over USB
I hope your USB power is adequate and stable
I know of a guy who lost a few tb of data using a similar setup due to the raspi having unstable USB powrr
>>
>>52472797
This is Banana Pi, way better.
Drives are anyway externally powered so that's no problem.
>>
>>52472723
USB2.0 is really slow for NAS storage, you'd need eSATA, USB3.0 or even firewire 800 as a bare minimum, also anything over 2tb you might want to consider RAID as fuck losing multiple terabytes of data.
>>

I'm doing exactly the same right now, but it's far from mindblowing. Mind that you WILL have to power the HDDs externally, the raspi will definately not have enough power.

Also forums report about 10 mb/s transfer rate which is mile from a good nas, but should do HD content streaming flawlessly.

Will use mine mostly for Music and Backups
>>
>>52472823
What kind of partition setup do you have in mind
>>
>>52472895
Nothing.
Just mounting them as separate drives and sharing via SAMBA and internet.

>>52472855
Same plan for me.
>>
>>52472918
Sidenote: rpi does not even supply a 2,5' with enough power, so think about that
I actually hat a Y Cable for this case, but it seem to be lost and that drives me to madness
>>
>>52472723
because if its anything like the raspberry pi it uses a usb ethernet adapter. accessing the hard drive over usb 2.0 is already a huge bottleneck without taking the ethernet into consideration
>>
>>52472723
Unless the SoC has atleast 1 Sata port or Esata Port your going to lose data.

Read these 2 articles and come back after if your still interested in arm based storage

>>
>>52473039
They don't have to be WD Greens.
>>
>>52472723
Just buy a nas enclosure or something. USB is slow a s fuck.
>>
Because the ethernet and USB bandwidth is shared. Enjoy seriously slow storage and retrieval.

Just spend the extra money and get one with SATA.
>>
>>52472735
This
Fuck USB2.0 docks.

Are there any single-board computers that have at least two USB3.0 ports? Or at least 2 Ethernet ports?
>>
Why not just pick up a used TS140? I've seen them go as low as $150 on CL?

More powerful and useful if you decide to do more..
>>
>>52473925
Not sold where I live, which is expensive ass Nordic country.
>>
>>52472723
One big problem I have seen commonly reported is USB HDD docks with more than 1 HDD seem to have a tendency to disconnect drives randomly. It seems unless you buy a super expensive NAS or ESATA/TB dock your pretty much going to have problems.
>>
I use the BananaPi is a Seattle Server with a 4TB hard drive connected over SATA. No problem at all, just works. I don't know how this actually works over USB but over SATA it just works fine.
