Not really.
>>
>>52383529
I quite like Ubuntu. I wish Unity had more flexibility but overall it is pretty good. I don't like how the dash is so fucking picky over shortcuts though. Pisses me off when I see random shit in their because I locked something to the dock. Also I wish Nautilus had more features. To be honest all the standard file managers on Linux are shit though.

I also quite like Ubuntu GNOME but GNOME Shell still feels quite a way off from being something I could use every day.

The #1 distribution is based on Ubuntu. In fact, most are.

Amazon spyware desu senpai.

Apart from Dolphin/KDE, I hate that the file managers can never display thumbnails in a non retarded manner. I maximize a file manager and increase the icon size. I could easily fit about 5 horizontally but for some reason they add a shitload of padding between them so I only get 2.

You realize that Ubuntu packages are based from Debian Unstable right?
>>
>>52383670
Pcmanfm thumbnails work fine for me.
>>
>>52383670
Yup. Also Files (nautilus) on Ubuntu is retarded in so many ways. It can't remember specific per folder settings. If you have a list view you can't multi-select with the mouse. It ignores _ characters at the start of a filename when sorting so if you have _important it will appear with the rest of the files starting with i. Can't have check boxes for tiles to make selecting multiple files easier. It can't pause or queue transfers. It doesn't inteligently handle multiple transfer to/from a drive by using a queue. Hell even Explorer does most of that shit in Windows.

On the subject of file managers I don't think ctrl shift select works the same way as it does in Windows (selecting multiple whilst not deselecting any others currently selected) for some Linux file managers.

crtl+shift+select selects all files between the previously highlighted file and the new point you click.

This. LTS is based on Debian Testing, though. Testing contains packages that have gone through some testing already, but not as extensive to be merged into Stable.

Nah, I have the exact same opinion of MATE, it's just Cinnamon without any of the polish.
The taskbar, system tray, right-click menus etc. all works like it should in a modern DE, MATE makes me feel like I'm back in 2005 again.

Why can't we have a DE that's as polished as GTK based DEs (like cinnamon), but has the file manager capabilties as good as QT based DEs such as Plasma?

The lack of multi selection hovering with a mouse in list view annoys me so much in GTK file managers. Why is it so hard for gnome devs to fix these problems.
>>
>>52384917
yes you can ctrl+click but that isnt what i meant. just using the mouse using click+drag to select a bunch of files.
>>

Ubuntu is a great distro and people new to Linux should use either Ubunut or Mint.
And for experienced Linux users the distro doesn't really matter as long as you have the programs you need and terminal window to work with.

I'm running KDE (v4).
Dolphin a shit (let's not even mention konqueror)

Ubuntu became the normiest distro, therefore /g/ says it sucks.

Linux is STILL in the dark ages because of Ubuntu.

They should have spent more time making programs and emulation of said programs more efficient so that they can attract the Windows crowd, but Ubuntu's desperation to be an "alternative" has pushed Linux's progress back immensely.

Yes, it works after you spend 10 hours making it work.

Then it stops working after you update it.

That's NOT the definition of just werks.

Most OS' that aren't in beta work OTB, but not all of them.

>implying you've ever actually used Arch
You do some very basic configuration which is all explained in the wiki and takes like half an hour. Then you can install whatever you want through the package manager. Most basic programs like Xorg work out of the box with the default config.
If you've ever used a CLI before Arch is just as easy to set up like Ubuntu or Debian.
>>

because its popular

but linux is already getting too popular in general, which is why you're seeing bsd coming up more often on /g/

>I turns on and does literally nothing, so it works!
>>
>>52385943
yeah, it works just the way it was intended to work
no it doesn't do a lot of things that other OSs do automatically, but it also wasn't meant to do that out of the box
working or not is just a matter of doing what it's supposed to, not having any OS do anything you want even if it's not meant to do it or at least not without supplementary software
Just like Windows doesn't compile C code out of the box, because it wasn't meant to do that out of the box
if it was meant to, but didn't, then it would not "just work"

yes i know. my point was it is missing a basic selection feature with the mouse that has been around since at least Windows 95. I can't remember how Program Manager worked on Windows 3.1 or Mac back then.
>>
>>52383529
Why doesn't anyone talk about the fact that they are headed by Canonical? Corporate control over FOSS is seldom profitable and they are bound to switch up the business model greedily in the future.

As for the distro itself, Unity isn't the best but by far I prefer it over GNOME. APT is not great but certainly not mediocre, and Ubuntu has a lot of repos because so many people use it. It uses systemd now which is another mediocre aspect about Ubuntu. Overall, Ubuntu is mediocre but just werks.

Unity is easy to use, and it looks good enough for the average user. I'm speaking from experience. Also, the effect Ubuntu had on users started happening way before Unity was a thing.

And it's the only one other than Gnome3 that looks like it is its own thing, because everything else looks like they tried to make them look like windows, so they feel off. And Gnome3, fancy as it might look, takes too much visual space.
