Eh, it depends on what it is. If it's something I usually download like FOSS, then I'm not actually contributing very much usually. If it's an obscure thing i'll seed indefinitely if I think there's a chance i'm one of the few with a copy.

I seed stuff on private trackers pretty much forever.
For public trackers, I just leave it there until my torrent client gets cluttered and remove them all at once. Usually takes a month or so.
Easier to just let it seed than to go and remove things frequently, also doesn't really hurt anything since I have a decent internet connection.

I have many torrents that are very rarely downloaded. I sometimes delete a torrent (including the files) after a certain time if I have no use for it and need diskspace (which I always need). I mean, I can't wait for ever and ever for someone to be interested in a 5gb Papuan Penis Gong Music torrent.
Smaller rare torrents I tend to keep up for a long time. If not actively then sporadically make them available to see if there are people who haven't been able to download them.

I has awful upload seeds. If it's a short term torrent that will replaced by a batch torrent in a few weeks, I don't worry too much about ratios. If it's from a private or semi-private tracker, I tend to try for 1x and will go farther if I can. If it's a rare file and I'm the only one uploading, I place it in a different folder and upload as long as possible.

Occasionally I look at what I'm seeding, if the upload speeds are low I stop them and replace them with other torrents to seed, and if the upload speeds are high I leave them to seed until the speed drops.
