I wonder why Apple didn't release a new one yet? I know the new Mac Pros were actually a very good value for workstations when they were first released but I'm not sure how true that is after two years have passed.

Does your company mostly use OSX exclusive applications?

It's still top of the range, the slightly lower specs are made up for by a superior user experience. Money and upgrades can't buy that.
>>
>>52343741
it's a pretty effective way to cool things, actually. have you seen the inside?

arranged in a prism shape, fan in the top, pulls air up from the bottom and out the top, one big fan cooling everything.

build your own pc's and install gentoo

Me neither

yeah, not like you can't just buy an external one and hook it up and leave it there. i mean if you did that, you'd have a portable huge external drive. who would want that?
>>
>>52343777
it is, but
1. it still overheats at full load
2. no expansion (besides ram)
>>
Haven't they not had a major refresh since their release? One should be due for this year.
>>
>>52343795

but then I'd have to suffer with both an ugly PC and a terrible user interface, problems that are fixed by working with the Mac Pro.

Why would I want to limit myself?
>>
>>52343715
I think Ive is just a mediocre designer who needed Jobs to slap his shit to get real and make an actual marketable product. Now that there's no one who can do that, Ive is doing whatever retarded shit a mediocre designer thinks would be a good product.

Doesn't that kill the "it's so small and nice and just werks" concept? Enjoy hooking up tons of loud external hard drives that can barely compete with internal ones at a way lower price.

But I guess "muh design" is very important when it comes to a fucking computer...
>>
>>52343667
That's a pretty small trashcan.
Nobody but Apple could fit two GPUs and a Xeon in a trashcan this small.
>>
>>52343928
you can fit a jet engine into a mini

just because you can, doesn't mean it's smart
>>

Actually it is, you pleb. Try and get a PC that small and sexy at anywhere near the functional ability.

But that's the point, Apple products aren't for poor people. Just because you can't afford them doesn't mean people that can should have to listen to your inferior opinion on why a Jerry-rigged PC running a shitty OS is 'superior'
>>

>>52343608
as far as I heard it's not really upgradable, although you can replace the hard drive I think.
That being said the cooling and size is out of this world. This thing is meant to be silent regardless whether it's web browsing or rendering 4k windows. The cooling is that good
>>
The only thing I like about the Mac Pro is the form factor. Seriously it's 2016 why can't I build my own Xeon powered dual gpu trash can yet?
>>
>>52344074
>The cooling is that good

It's obviously not, if it reaches around 100C at full load (the 12 core model).
Maybe they just needed to ramp up the fan a bit more, but then it wouldn't be "silent" anymore.
>>
>>52344117
cool story bro. Every review I read said they were unable to get the cpu past 50 degrees with every render possible
>>

inb4 it's a benchmark it doesn't count
First of all, that's a poor excuse, because if a PC is designed properly it's supposed to pass any benchmarks with flying colors.
Second, even with a "real world" example it was very close to the thermal limits and throttling. Running at 90C is still fucking terrible for a "workstation". And keep in mind the review was in the middle of winter, so that's probably optimistic.
>>
>>52343739

> blah blah blah blah

I have a first-gen mac pro

socketed CPUs and 8 RAM slots means it's still powerful today. spent under $300 and put the newest Xeon of that socket in the board w/ new paste... shit tons of cheap ECC ram from amazon... raid-10 2TB array...

new mac pros are cool, but in 3-5 years you'll be stuck with a fancy overpriced paperweight you can't ever upgrade. shit sucks.
>>
>replacing 2012 mac pro with trashcan
>not just upgrading cpu/gpu because 2012 mac pro was the last good system apple released
>>
I have the 6-core model, and mainly do composing with it. It's nice, fast enough, quiet but the amount of wires you need to connect to it (external storage/peripherals etc.) nullifies the so called "beauty" and form factor. I have the Thunderbolt Display but it doesn't help much on the beforementioned.

But it werks.
>>
>>52344044
>But that's the point, Apple products aren't for poor people.

Im so over this stupid argument.

Poor people buy bad computers and bad Macs.
Rich people also buy good computers and good Macs.

The money you spend on the design could be redirected towards purchasing stronger computational ability.
Nobody is ever going to applaud your firm for saving some space, at the end of the day efficiency is what's important.

Open up an art gallery dedicated to the visage of trashcans if you must but don't mix that with your workplace, christ.

Says the man proud of building an inferior system for a lower price.
>>
>>52344504
you're genuinely retarded if you think a mac pro could beat that build.
>>
>>52344389
Not him but;
>8 core vs 12
12 cores running at 2.7Ghz vs 8 cores running at 4.4Ghz stable OC. The former has 50% more cores but the latter runs over 60% faster: they will attain parity in tasks that the can make full use of all cores, but the 5960X will also be vastly faster if you also run programs that can't.
>1 GPU vs 2 GPU
One very fast GPU vs two very slow GPUs, not even taking into account OC headroom, which the Mac Pro has none of. A Titan X or even 980 Ti will destroy the D700s in acceleration tasks.
>inferior cooling
Depends on cooling used. With water cooling and direct airflow available to the GPU, a nice mITX case like the NCASE M1 has adequate cooling for even an 8-core and 980 Ti. Remember that the Mac Pro is a highly TDP-limited device, none of it's components run higher than stock speeds.
>terrible design
Subjective. The M1 is the same height and width as the Mac Pro, but twice as deep.

If you want ECC, just swap the 5960X for an E5 1660 V3 and have the same thing but with Xeon features.
>>

>>
>>52344356

>since technically a 3ghz dual quad-core never actually existed

It did, it was just a build to order model, not off the shelf.

Closest equivalent on Apple's spec site says it takes 146W idle 309W full CPU load, for a machine that's about as fast as a quad core mac mini (late 2012), which takes 11-85W.

Let's just ignore him then, and let the poor fool be happy that his company is getting Shit Pros "Applel support in 5 days edition".

For everyone else, there is absolutely no reason to get one, ever. Even if they release an updated version eventually, you could already have a better system today. And if form factor isn't an issue, you don't have to limit yourself with customization either.

Fractal R5, X99-E WS, 1660v3, 64GB ECC, as many GPUs as you care for, Noctua D-15, SeaSonic or EVGA PSU, 950 Pro boot SSD, as much mass storage as you care for, and it'll still be cheaper than even a moderately spec'd MP 2013.

professionals who do things like edit video will DEFINITELY use all of those.

the tower mac pro was the BEST computer apple ever built... then they took it and made it a cutesy consumer garbage can.

apple needs to fire the design team responsible for this; they're probably the ones who thought a charging port on the bottom of the mouse was a good idea.

talk all the shit you want, but not everyone spends their lives posting on 4chan. some people actually produce music and movies and having a little cylinder with no expansion is not useful to them. apple eliminating the tower mac pro took the mac pro from being a professional workstation to a consumer toy for the rich.

these solutions are an attempt to fix that.
