So it comes with a controller and shit?
Neat.

Also, you grossly underestimate the costs, or lack thereof, when it comes to these kinds of packages. Sure, it costs _something_ but for mass production it's nothing to talk about.

That extra bullshit adds just a bit more to the cost the oculus itself (which makes most of the price), but it gives the developers a standardized platform that allows them to make higher quality products, knowing that everyone will have at least that hardware.

Not necessarly, but it would help the developers make controller-based games without fearing that users won't have the hardware to play them.
Also, a controller is clearly better than mouse+keyboard when you can't see whare your hands are.

Because it uses a better tracking technology

Instead of utilizing image analysis which is innacurate as fuck and requires massive computing files, all you do is measure delay from multiple sources and triangulate (is this the correct term?) the location, which is basic fucking math a basic cpu will be perfectly happy to do.

Hell I have no use for a VR, I will never buy one in the next decade. I don't even play videogames. But vive's approach to the movement tracking is just superior
>>
>>52306585
That does sound a lot better. If this is possible, how come Oculus chose a camera instead?
>>
>>52306550
vive can theoretically be used as a 3d scanner. so you can scan your entire body and room and use that in video games or for 3d printing.
>>
>>52306550
See >>52306533 and >>52306585

From the impressions we've seen at CES, the Rift was better in terms of quality but the Vive provided a much more enjoyable experience. Why? Because the vive is built with room-scale tracking in mind; it can do everything the Rift can do and more with ease. All of the Rift launch titles are seated experiences for a reason; Oculus thinks room-scale VR is a gimmick and are pleading developers create games that don't utilize their convoluted tracking system in such a manner.
>>52306626
The Rift has had a camera since DK2.

I honestly have no idea.

My guess is that they didn't think about it much and were influenced by movement tracking on consoles present at the time, the hype went on so they decided it will not be economical to scrap the project and start from zero
>>
waiting for vive 2, when they introduce eye tracking. someone posted a video a few days ago that showed off vr eyetracking. basically only the part your eyes are focus on will be rendered in the full resolution. the parts in your peripheral view is not rendered at the full resolution, saving resources and allowing for prettier graphics. never buy first gen new tech.

Well walking around does seem like a gimmick to me. My room isn't big enough and I imagine it to become boring really fast.
There was a vive demonstration thing at gamescom last year, but I couldn't check it out because it was so full that it needed reservation in order to get in.
I did check out an oculus combined with a bicycle though, that was pretty cool and it doesn't move around. Could drive around on the bicycle with sensors and the forces you'd experience got translated on the bike you sat on, making it feel like you're going uphill or downhill and stuff.

The Vive can actually scan your room in 3D and incorporate the environment into the game so you don't bump into a wall while walking around. Oculus Rift games are all stationary and to be played with an Xbox one controller. The Vive comes with controllers that were specifically designed for VR.

Here is what i think it will happen.
Rift will flop due to price and no games for it.
Even if they manage to cut the price $50 not including the xox controller thats still a lot of money.

Valve will release it bundled with Half Life 3 or Portal 3 remember that the point of selling this thing is to have fun with it and Im pretty sure they will go with HL3 because that the only way how they can release the game and not to be disappointment.
They will charge reasonable amount of money I would say around $400 with HL3 included with I think it will be a fair deal for many people.

People who can't touch-type and they want to play something that needs a lot of keys.

If you're playing only using WASD and a couple other keys, then you can play without looking, but some games need you to write and do other more complex stuff, and for those it would be hard, so in that case, making the interface "gamepad-centric" is the better option.
>>
>>52307119
their "breakthrough" intrigues to be honest
but it is probably marketing bla-bla
>>
>>52307121
The Xbox controller costs us almost nothing to bundle, and people can easily resell it for profit. A lot of people wish we would sell a bundle without “useless extras” like high-end audio, a carrying case, the bundled games, etc, but those just don’t significantly impact the cost. The core technology in the Rift is the main driver - two built-for-VR OLED displays with very high refresh rate and pixel density, a very precise tracking system, mechanical adjustment systems that must be lightweight, durable, and precise, and cutting-edge optics that are more complex to manufacture than many high end DSLR lenses. It is expensive, but for the $599 you spend, you get a lot more than spending $599 on pretty much any other consumer electronics devices - phones that cost $599 cost a fraction of that to make, same with mid-range TVs that cost $599.
>>
>>52307133
>People who can't touch-type and they want to play something that needs a lot of keys.
Trust me, nobody who plays games with that kind of number of keys need to look at keyboard.
>>
>>52307137
If this is it, it's a huge disappointment and would suggest dishonesty on HTC's part, since the molds for the dev kits have had space for the front-facing camera for a year now and this upcoming feature has been discussed at length; this is clearly not a last-minute breakthrough that would delay shipping.

I would sit back and wait for further word from HTC/Vive before assuming this is the big feature for the CV that they've been talking up, because that would be a huge anticlimax.

I can't control my wing squads with that properly without the keyboard.

I use shift buttons to control the communications in FS2 for example, macros work too.

the "breakthrough" is the front facing camera, the HTC marketing guy literally told you that was the breakthrough

I can't think of anything worse than combining a VR headset with exercise, imagine all the sweat in the foam pads
>>
>people still think this will be useful for anything but flight sims or similar games

Being capable of standing experiences doesn't mean it'll do well at them; Oculus' position on Rift CV1 even before the Vive was announced, was that they were focusing on seated experiences and nothing more. The Rift won't be capable of proper standing experiences until the Touch comes out and gives consumers a second camera to fiddle with; the cameras themselves aren't really designed for room scale either nor are they wireless so the long haul, I think HTC has Oculus beat.

horror games and rail shooters

>That extra bullshit adds just a bit more to the cost
it almost doubles the price.
>>
>>52305377
more like
>oh it doesn't come with a controller, carrying case, remote, two pack in games, and $200 headphones that nobody asked for and is only $350? great!
>>
Am I correct in thinking that because the rift only has a single camera, it suffers from occlusion issues?
>>
>>52308631
If you use the touch controller, it requires 2 cameras.

1 camera won't matter if it's just tracking the HMD.
>>
>>52304760
did the DK really use a phone panel for this display?

that right there honestly explains the price jump desu senpai

there's a currently a company who does eye tracking tech that will mod your dk2 for around 20k. i wouldn't get my hopes up for eye tracking being standard in consumer versions any time soon.
>>
>>52308661

So you will have to buy another camera, as well as the touch controllers?
>>
>>52305432
>Implying you could ever do shit with that
Ayy lmao
>>
>>52308757

the touch controller comes with another camera
>>
Is there any reason to get this over any other models? Or waiting 2-3 years for a price drop? I just want to plug and play with all my things.
>>
>>52309136
just wait for the chinese to release a clone that doesn't include the $200 headphones.
>>
>>52306694
i feel the same way

but at the same time some company just fucking released some crazy gun gear

>unload your AR/AK
>strap on fancy hand grip with buttons and a button behind the trigger
>strap a control pod thing with more buttons to one side of your rail
>strap the tracker to the other rail
>your legitimate fucking AR or AK rifle just became your controller

that + vive + arma = OPERATORS OPERATING

but again, theres like a total of 2 or 3 games i would use that setup for

imho i see VR arcade cabinets making a comeback rather than more consumer/in house funs

>spend $1400 on computan
>spend $700 on vive
>spend $400 for the fancy gun tracker
and why the fuck not
>$300 on that vibration vest or whatever

all just to have fun in 3 games

inho shooters will not be properly enjoyable without a gun shaped controller and room to walk around

flight sims would probably be hella dope as long as you have enough physical buttons to trigger shit

>setup all this in warehouse
>runn around operating
>run to a-10
>drop gun sit down in chair
>BRRRRRRRRT

i forget what the gun thing is called sorry saw it on the meme book
>>
>>52309242
i guess it's technically for airsoft guns so you can use a gas gun for muh recoil

I love being reminded why it sucks to be an early adopter. Only the really early adopters (kickstarter) are really getting anything out of it.
