What chat clients do you /g/uys use and why?
>>
There are NO good IRC clients for Windows and its fucking annoying.

>mIRC: lol paying
>HydraIRC: no updates since 2008
>Everything else: shitty loonix ports with non-native GTK+ widgets

I would still say HydraIRC is the best one to use anyways even if its super old
>>
>inb4 irssi
I'm using HexChat.
>why
Because I'm not a basement dweller with will and time to configure a client that requires age to set it properly and I like guis that have been invented for a reason.
Also I made my HexChat scripts.
>>
>>52220921
its called HexChat dumbass
>>
irccloud master race here.
privacy is dead.
>>
>>52221130
Hexchat is a GTK port, nigger
>>
I use hexchat, Why?

Because I'm lazy, I don't wanna try half chat programs and switch back to one I liked.

Fuck it, it's works. it'll do.
>>
emacs
>>
weechat

i cbf opening multiple irc instances across my computers
>>
>>52220921
>mIRC: lol paying

I've never had to pay in spite of it saying that my trial has run out for over a year of daily use now.

> GTK+ widgets
What is this and why is it an issue?
>>
>>52221495
Mirc is the winrar of irc
>>
>>52220579
bitchx
>>
>>52220579
on windows, miranda IM, because it's the only usable AND configurable client.

can't really find a good replacement on linux. kde telepathy and gajim seem ok. pidgin is cancerous bloat.
>>
>>52221130

HexChat is buggy and overflows all the fucking time for me. I guess it works for you and that's fine, but for me it's a piece of shit.
>>
>>52220579
Hexchat on Windows/Linux
XChat Aqua on OSX 10.4
and previously WookieChat on Amiga

IRC for android by Counter Cultured (yes i paid a buck for a phone app for IRC)
>>
Weechat or Irssi for anything with a terminal or an SSH client.
Atomic (F-Droid only) for Android.

>ssh into home server for irssi from laptop or phone when I'm not at home
It just werks, truly irssi is the best IRC client

>>
>>52221941
you must be a blast at parties, oh wait...
>>
>>52221982
I'm not sure what using the only good IRC client has to do with parties.
>>
>>52221783
That irc for Android is amazing. It's worth well more than the dollar comparing it to all of the awful android clients
>>
>>52221353
Xchat-WDK
>>
>>52220579
Linux:
Konversation is best for handling many channels on a single server (ie Freenode), great bookmarking and UI

XChat/HexChat are good if you like to go on multiple servers at the same time

OSX:
Textual is best on OSX but is not free

Colloquy is free and ok, but a few things about it hold it back
>>
>>52222017
Do you have a link?
Currently using HoloIRC but not a huge fan, also AndChat but they feel so clunky
>>
Steam for my gamer-friends
Skype for my real life friends
WhatsApp for my tech-illiterate friends
>>
>>52222017
it really is, its the only one i found that did not crash randomly. It had a UI that is pretty well designed for a 4" touch screen. Best of all it uses barely anyram so the OS never sees a reason to kill it.

Does it really not require you to pay after the trial runs out? That's hilarious, I might have to use it then.

Apparently it was fixed in later versions, though. I think this was 3.16 ? Maybe.

This sounds interesting. I dont have a home server however so this is probably unobtainable for the time being.

it just works

I don't.

What fun.
>>
got some old as fuck version of mIRC bundled with nnscript 4.22 from ages ago

it just werks
>>
>>52225232
this but on one of my hosted servers since it uses almost no resources. Love having global notifications to phone through it and pushbullet, all that data scraping, the ability to use twitter through it and more.
>>
x-chat because it comes stock and works well

how much is it, i have a job so, i can pay if they do not want insane monies
>>
>>52221353
and it's still better than every other client.
>>
>>52224751
IRC clients use shit-all for resources; all you need for hardware is a Raspberry Pi and an SD card with an OS on it. It draws like three watts under load and is dead silent.
>set up RPi with a static IP (and a public IPv6 address if you've got an IPv6 subnet at home)
>forward port 22 to that IP on your router (and allow inbound port 22 to the Pi's IPv6 address if you've got IPv6)
>install screen or tmux for persistence
>install irssi or weechat for a client
>start your client inside your persistence tool
>>
>>52225765
>>52227816
It is dead, Hexchat took over its development

> A single-user license costs US$20.00

>>52220579
I use mIRC because its the most feature rich client and is also stable as fuck. If the US army uses it, its because its good
