Trying to find an IDE to USB adaptor that uses USB rather than than a wall plug for power.
Is this possible? Does IDE use too much power to even be usable on USB 3.0?
>bus powered IDE to USB
WTF am I reading?

Possible? Maybe. Has it ever been built and sold as a product? I doubt it.

Doesn't exist sir.

USB 3.0 can do 900 mAh at 5 volts. You could just power the IDE drive from 2 USB ports to get the voltage you need.

Needs considerable amps at 12V so most likely impossible with USB 2.0
Might be possible with USB 3.0 but probably nobody would make such a thing.
Even with two standard USB 3.0 ports it's questionable. There are a few motherboards out there with higher current limits than what official USB specifies, so maybe possible there.
I just looked up the Seagate 7200.9 SATA (probably more efficient than IDE) specifications, and it takes 2.8A on the 12V rail during initial startup...
Even beyond that, I don't know that I've ever seen a USB product that converts 5v to 12v instead of using an extra AC adapter - so it must be uneconomical.

Forget it.
Buy a 2.5" SATA drive which can be powered by USB, or use a wall plug.

Alright, thank you. I see that desktop IDE is too power hungry to even consider using through USB power.
Problem solved.
I think ide drives need more power than the usb can provide? Or maybe it cant do power and data for it.
