Why does the battery life on linux suck so badly?
>>

Because hardware manufacturers are not motivated to provide decently optimized drivers for their linux platform.

By motivation I of course means money, in the consumer tech world, linux users aren't big enough group to make good optimization worth the investment.

The only hardware company that makes it is Intel, but only because they've found linux users to be profitable enough market.
Best example of it are GPUs, intel's integrated graphics and iris pro chips are the only graphic processors that "just work" right out of the box.
>>
>>52211729

buggy platform ACPI bytecode that only works properly in Windows
powersaving options missing from drivers or disabled by default because of stability
the graphical desktop is a permanent work in progress
if you don't manually enable SNA accel or something even basic 2D can be extremely CPU heavy
the two common browsers (Chromium and Firefox) are among the least CPU efficient
Skype for Linux is a CPU hog, constantly waking up the system to poll for something
kernel schedulers, governors, etc. often optimized for server throughput

I'm running Arch on a shitty Toshiba laptop with an intel processor.
Battery life is fine, even on my badly treated battery (second hand machine).

It just works. Plus I got a big performance boost. Hell, I'd say if you have a shitty laptop with only 2gb of RAM, put linux on it. Instant win.

The list goes on and on. Free tards will just spew the same old memes that they always do to defend it. I seriously tried to invest myself with linux and enjoy it over the years. If you are not gaming on Linux, why would you install proprietary GPU drivers? Gaming is still not there, but I hope Vulkan will change that in the near future. If you are trying to update to an unstable kernel version, you're pretty much asking for trouble and unless you are a developer I don't see a point in doing that.

Even the fucking wireless card support is wonky. I found myself when using linux my wifi signal would bounce all over the place other then my assumption was the driver was a piece of shit. I tried linux for about a month before heading back to windows.

Most distro's ship a tool so you can install drivers from a GUI and the ones they suggest usually work. I haven't tried every card out there but it worked for me.
>if it doesn't work
Then you revert to the snapshot you made before you installed the driver.
>new kernel problems
Either learn how or use the one your distro suggest.
>60% CPU for no reason.
This might be the only thing that could be a real issue for someone.
But you deal with this the same way as you deal with it on windows, you restart the process or find a fix.
It is often something wrong with your configuration, so either stop messing with things you don't understand or accept they brake from time to time.
You can be certain that with such a large set of developers, using 60% CPU for hours will not be tolerated for long.

>>
>>52212271
Yep, definitely. If KDE made Plasma smoother and bug free, they could attract so much more users to Linux. Combined with Vulkan or whatever makes gaming possible on Linux - and we have a winner.

>No viruses
Linux actually has viruses, they're very limited on what they can do though
>>
>>52212271
Very obvious. Until a distro that comes along that truly has a command line free experience nobody will want to adapt to it.
>>
>>52212337
To be fair the only real reason it doesn't have viruses is because linux only holds 2% of the desktop market. If it actually takes off at some point just wait and watch and you will start to see more viruses being created for it.

Anyone know wtf this kworker 2.0 is? Why the fuck is it eating 60% of my cpu?
>>
>>52212352
It's not just the DE, many components at lower-levels relevant for desktop usage suck.

- X.Org/X11 is fragile, ancient and annoying to deal with.
- ALSA is annoying to deal with if you run into a problem.
- Propriety GPU drivers (at least AMD) are a mess.
- Open source GPU drivers are incomplete and/or perform terribly.
- Driver support for different devices (e.g. trackpad, mobile broadband) are inferior to their Windows equivalent.

...and so on

And also there's >>52212380. Normal users don't want to bother with the CLI at all, as they can't deal with that.

>>52212368
The virus problem on Windows is mainly a problem of users running executable containing malware or adware and them accepting UAC prompts carelessly. Exploit-based viruses are not that common or better said wide-spread nowadays, though they happen from time to time, but that's a problem that Linux could also face.
>>
>>52212380

You can use Ubuntu without even knowing the terminal exists.

Kworker starts to use a lot of CPU when you have unsupported hardware, use an updated kernel.
>>
>>52211694
>Why does the battery life on linux suck so badly?
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Sometime the user is the problem, not the OS. I went through this stage of denial and agitation due to my own inability to make my system work.

Everything is a learning process, I migrated to Linux after 12 years of using Windows. I didn't do it overnight, I ran an older desktop with Ubuntu parallel to my Windows laptop and kept testing it to see what is possible. How far can I replicate the same functions of Windows, what software can run, any known issues for my hardware.

Surprisingly my first test run with Xubuntu on my main laptop was so successful that I have no booted back into Windows for quite some time.

It was worth it.
