my motha wants me to get her a phone that can make nice photos, even in low light conditions.
I've been out of the smartphone scene for a while, being happy with my nexus5, she always talks about how Huawei is supposed to be the shit for cameras, but I suspect that's because in the last year they've started pushing it a lot with marketing, so all the dudes in malls suggest it.
I know that the 6s, S6, G4 have great cameras, but I was more looking for a tier2ish phone, she doesnt really need the extra bs.
no windows phones or flagships
>>
>>52211261
huawei ascend p7

decent phone, very good camera and should be dirt cheap now that the next one is out.
>>
>>52211313
I might go with this, she's obsessed with huawei since she keeps seeing signs for their phones and all the tech shop assistants keep suggesting those because they clearly have to sell a bunch. Her mind is already set, getting anything other would come back to haunt me with her complaining any time she has a problem...
thanks

Been using sweetfx to inject some FXAA into unsupported games and whatnot and been trying to find some more in depth explanations for the settings.

>define fxaa_Subpix
>define fxaa_EdgeThreshold
>define fxaa_EdgeThresholdMin

What do these mean? Is higher or lower settings better? I keep comparing with screenshots but it's all starting to look the same, maybe I need a break.

The theme manager doesnt change colours, and theme rarely look much different.

Also, is there a fix to the maximise bug? If I select a different theme, the windows topbar maximises out of the viewport.

Greens are the low power ones iirc. Put 'em in a NAS or something.

I use wd blacks for all of my games because I can't afford 4TB of solid state.

Any advice on alternative ways to type it in or skip it?

Most people call anti-static wristbands a meme. Use one anyway.

Computer building is easy, it's just a confidence thing. Once you build one, you will be surprised how easy it is.

However, computer diagnostics can be different. Having some spare working parts around can make your life very easy. This means you can swap out suspicious parts to test if it's the culprit.

How to ground yourself, when to apply force and when not, reading manuals, using Google.

That's it.

1. Unplug it and clear the fleet power
2. If you need a new psu, get one. Don't try to open it up and fix it, its not worth dying for.
3. Install gentoo

i especially like the look/feel/featureset of thinkpads (at least, before lenovo started to shit it up)

xps/latitude are also fine technically, i just don't think they look/feel quite so nice

I recently built a new PC with a 4690k and an r9 380.

>>52212974
That's what happens with the stock cooler. I hope it isn't OC'd
>>
>>52213036
I'm not OC'd
Really the stock is that shitty?? I thought i'd be fine if i wasn't OCing
>>
>>52213050
80C and 60C are not dangerous, you just won't get much more out of the CPU
>>
I just upgraded my W7 desktop to W10, and suddenly my internet is running slow as shit. Constant time out errors, pages only half-loading etc. This is the same across browsers

Speeds are fine on other devices, like my Macbook. What's the deal here? I turned off all the automatic update and p2p shit, so I can't see how W10 is hogging the bandwidth
>>
>>52213033
Since its very wise to buy preowned for any business laptop, I wouldn't bother waiting. The prices won't drop significantly in 4 months.

If you're buying anything new, keep your eye out for sales and if you don't see any that takes your fancy, buy last minute. (And don't be upset when it comes on sale a day after you buy it)
>>
>>52213074
Uploading all your dataz to the NSA takes a lot of bandwidth anon
>>
>>52213033
unless you already know of something you're looking forward to, no, it's not worth waiting
new stuff comes out constantly, you could wait forever and still have something better come out in 4 months time

none of your school-related requirements are going to change enough to make a difference, you could use a 5-8 year old laptop and still have no trouble running school programs

But I have to say I think you're mistaking your GPU temp for your CPU temp. A game wouldn't make the CPU temp vary that much

I think you need better airflow in your case

>>
>>52212851
Give it back, Jamal.
>>
>>52213185
Accurate enough to tell you you've got a problem.

Your cooler obviously isn't cutting it, no chips are equal, you've obviously got one that running pretty hot.

However, those temps aren't dangerous, they are designed to go to their tj-max.

That could be, once i had the motherboard installed I didn't have the stock cooler clipped in all the way and had to push it in further (pre-boot).
What's a lower profile cooler, cuz my case is cramped and doesn't seem like it could fit a 212.

20 seconds to boot. That's about twice as fast with a desktop and HDD mounted OS. Not bad for it's age.

If used thinkpads weren't so expensive here in the UK, I might consider grabbing one.

Is the lumia 750 cancelled?
>>
>>52213318
linux itself loads at the 13 second mark
graphical login by the 18 second mark

besides boot, loading "big" programs like gimp and libreoffice is also shown to also be very quick, as is shutdown

the bios takes up most of the boot time, which is not something an ssd (or cpu/ram/etc) can help, unfortunately

the point is basically, much of the difference (for common usage) between current laptops and oldish-but-pre-ssd ones is just the ssd, and it's no trouble to put an ssd into them

>If used thinkpads weren't so expensive here in the UK
fyi, i paid AU$80 for it in 2014, practically-new condition, which is fairly common for business laptops, since they're often used in... businesses, where they're often (though not always) treated well
>>

No. I meant red flags as by be cautious. It's nearing its point where you start to wear on its lifespan
>>
>>52213398
And it seems you were born about 100 years ago.
Intel would not offer warranties on the chips if they weren't good for it.

>>
>>52213524
I've done it inside the case dozens of times before. But I am a train technician with a lot of experience. It can be done, but don't if you don't feel comfortable or cannot do so
>>
Started my computer up today, when I got to the login screen, the entire screen was peppered with black squares. There were a few black lines on either side of the screen, and one thick black bar across the top area of the screen. I tried to log in, but the screen just went straight black after I did that.

Does this mean my graphics card is dying? Could dusting it out fix it, or is it 100% completely dead forever?

It was working fine yesterday, though, and I wasn't taxing it either.
Could a power surge do this? When I woke up today all three of my monitors were off as well as my computer, and one of my monitors refuses to turn back on, like it's damaged.

power surges can damage things, yes

>>
>>52213328
>>52213432
I don't think you'll find any reliable sources for damage to CPUs at 90C or even 100C. Intel's thermal shutdown happens at about 125C, but Intel will throttle speeds when it hits 100C to prevent thermal shutdown.

I'd bet that even 200C for 30 seconds or so wouldn't cause any practical damage.
>>
>>52213660
I'm just surprised that it could damage a graphics card without appearing to damage the motherboard, power supply, or CPU. It can still boot up, after all.

>You're a lying sack of shit.
He's not. While some processors may work at those high temps, you're reducing their lifespan significantly and risking failure.

Only a retard would sacrifice component longevity for laziness or convenience.

>>52213685
considering one of the monitors stopped working, it could be that that monitor is the problem, was that monitor plugged into the mentioned graphics card?

You guessed right. I've been thinking about getting an SSD too, but I'm still worried about its lifetime and reliability.

But considering how beaten up the laptop itself is - keyboard broken, battery gone - I might as well buy a new one. But again, the new laptop might come with its own HDD which I might or might not want to replace with an SSD, which I'm still not sure about.

good, I can customize it to a specific shape and paint it. Just didn't want to shell up $20 for a plastic mat that didn't even fit the space right.
>>
>>52214479
uh yeah they make mats for this. or you could just swap out the wheels for some carpet-compatible ones.
>>
>>52214479
You can buy plastic mats with little teeth on the bottom that serve to create a smooth surface on top of the carpet.
I bought one to protect my carpet when the bottom of my chair dragging on it started to chew a hole in it.

This isnt so much a question. But I've been trying to convince my wife that we need cable internet (on DSL right now) so I've been downloading gigantic files that take hours to complete before I go to work and on the weekends so that she can't even watch a youtube video at 480p w/o interruptions.

It seems to be working.

set up QoS on your router

best of both worlds

usable browsing for the "wife", and all spare bandwidth goes to downloads

of course, if you can get cable than setup QoS *after* you get it for an extra win

Should work okay, but USB doesn't do that well over long distances and with hubs. You may have to unplug/replug things from time-to-time to make them work. I don't even like wireless, but personally I'd go with wireless devices if you're using them from the couch. Logitech K400 is a good start.

I'm thinking about setting up a plex media center in my house. I want to be able to access it through my smart tv, desktop, laptop, and other devices. Because I live alone, I will usually only be watching on one device at a time, maybe two in rare occasions.

I want to store my media centrally on a NAS. I want the redundancy RAID 1 or 1+0 provides and the ability to not be leaving my powerhouse of a desktop running 24/7. Additionally, I would like my NAS to be able to handle any torrent downloads that I schedule on it, so I'm not manually sending files over to it whenever I download something new.

I'm not sure how about to go doing that. Are there any good resources out there for a first time NAS build? Also, what dictates if media needs to be transcoded? I've seen some prebuilts claiming they can transcode and others that cannot.

I have a good 150 or so GB of music on my desktop at home that I'd like to be able to stream to my phone and laptop, any suggestions on how to accomplish this ?

Desktop runs Windows 8.1, I also have my home server available which runs Linux if that helps. Maybe the server can access the music on desktop PC through SMB shares or something if there's a good Linux program for this ?
Most of the results I found on google suggested Plex and Spotify (really ?), which seems kind of dumb for just music.

The base Ubuntu system must have those packages. The point of the mini iso is so that you can have one image used to install a variety of systems and to give the installer more choice. But since Ubuntu is very newbie friendly, they only give choice up to a point. If you really wish to exclude these things you should probably try Linux from Scratch or Slackware.

Does anyone know a way to force rotation for webms playback on android?

I keep my rotation on my phone locked but sometimes I want to view a short video, youtube, a webm here or something and I usually do this in my browser (lightning).
The webm player has a full screen button in the corner, but it doesn't do what I want:
Maximize and show in landscape mode.
I have to turn the rotation back on, view the video and remember to turn it off again when I am done.

Is there a way to fix this?

85C is fine for a CPU. CPUs can get to 95-100C before having throttle. OCing your CPU a little more is not going to make any difference in most video games. He could OC his video card for a few more fps, as long as the GPU is still under ~95-100C max load, but its wintertime, so I'd say anything under 90C under a stress test will be fine for summertime gaming too.

Alright, I've got crossfired Radeon 7950's, and each card has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 mini Display ports.

I've got 3 monitors, 1 ultrawide that's my main screen, 1 144hz monitor that's my secondary, and 1 older model 24in 1080p that's my third monitor. How do I hook up of them up at once on crossfired cards? Right now my 144hz is connected though DVI and the ultrawide though HDMI, both on the first card.

I've read that I need to get an active mini display port adapter to HDMI, because of Eyefinity or whatever the fuck it's called, but they're like $20-$25 and I'd rather not spend money If I have to trying to get all 3 monitors to work.

I don't want the game to stretch across 3 screen, I just want all 3 monitors "on", so I have have TS on my left monitor and chrome up on my right monitor while I do shit on my main monitor.

Not that good when it comes to CPU's.

Currently I'm rocking a "Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz". Which has served me well but is starting to show it's age a bit.

One of the big issues is I'm using some retarded socket(1156) and I don't really want to spend all that cash getting a new mobo as well as a new CPU.

Is there still decent ones made for the 1156?
Is my current one still okay? I do some gayming but most of that it older stuff. But the few modern games I do try doesn't exactly run great.
>>
>>52217816
I believe there was only one generation of 1156 CPUs made. So you could go like... i7 870 or something max.
>>
>>52217844
I see. Would it be worth upgrading or do you think I should just wait a while and go all out and get both a new CPU and mobo?

It ain't easy being a poorfag. Can't really justify upgrading it right now since most if the time it still works fine.
>>
>>52217906
An overclocked i7 870 might be able to run most modern games and suchlike decently.

Wouldn't recommend unless you can find one for really cheap though, it's a better idea to just go all the way and upgrade both CPU and mobo to at least something Haswell.

Anyhow.
Looking at the input ports,it seems youll have to utilize the minidp and hdmi.

I dont see how the fan going mental could cause overheating, if you meant overheating of the fan itself its probably designed to take that load without issues. I dont know if its normal but same thing happened to me when updating my x100e bios through wangblows.

How can i know if a program creates/modifies a file when it's launched/closed? And how to find the file?

In Chrome, what's the best way to customize the new tab page with what websites I want instead of them being my most visited?

Didnt know about it, looks nice and simple, thanks.

It's common for CPU fans to max out when the system is first starting or when the firmware is set to default settings.

What's good for handling multiple monitors on Windows 7? Switching wallpapers and moving/resizing windows and such?
I like Display Fusion free well enough, but the profiles would be nice since my monitor rotates. The rest of the pro features are wasted on me, though.

I've just bought a Lenovo Yoga 700 11.6" as my primary device for the next 3 or so years. Core M3-6Y30 processor

Did I mess up?
Bare in mind before this I was largely using an Asus T100 as my main machine so I don't really need a whole lot of power but it'd be nice to run the occasional game

My dad offered to buy me a macbook pro for Xmas but I would like advice about what model to get? I have never had a macbook pro. For the next 2 years I would use it primarily at a desk with very little transport, but after that I may be taking it with me to teach classes.

I like to use Photoshop and I also do video editing for academic videos and short films. I would like to get back into Web Design too, but I haven't done anything related to that in about 10 years so, my main uses are photo and video editing, Microsoft Suite, and making a lot of powerpoints for lectures.

What is the best option for me?
>>
>>52218650
Yeah you fucked up. Terrible gaming performance, and you paid the MS tax. That said, it's not worth getting a gaming laptop anyway.

Which actual model did you get? Google says Lenovo 700 is a 14" model...
>>
>>52218684
Dont get a macbook then?
>>

Are you a hobbit?`
>>
>>52218650
Can you not return it?
Holy shit thats bad
>>
>>52218759
What would you recommend?
I hate to sound like an idiot - he said maxbook pro so I thought that was really good?

I work in academia in a humanities dept and they all have macbooks.

Just had my first kid ad i guess he wanted to give me a really special present.

What would be best for my needs?
Keep in mind that I only have used macs for the past 8 years

Why the FUCK does my AMD R9 390 IDLE at 63c? The fans don't even fucking spin up until 70. Is this because it's to pander to "muh silence" faggots? I have to use MSI Afterburner to manage the fans. If I do that, it idles at 30c. Load is 75c. Is this normal/acceptable?

Magic 8ball, will Kingdom Hearts 3 come to PC?

Its not normal temperature, but it is well within its operating range.

Photography in low-light depends on the photographer and the app used.
Android has good photography apps that can see more than the human eye in the near-dark.
Of course a camera with >12mp is recommended if not required

Nah there's an 11" model
http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/lenovo/yoga/yoga-700-11/
By saying occasional Game I really don't mean anything heavy. I'm not expecting to run Fallout 4, more just an Indie game or something that I won't be able to play on my PS4. The T100 only had an Intel Atom Processor and I was honestly largely fine with that.

I'm well aware at that price I can get a far better laptop but I wanted something small, light and fanless
>>52218787
Just a manlet
>>
>>52218224
Get an actual loft ladder, what's wrong with you?
>>
>>52218572
I guess I'm just really anxious because something's up with my cooling lately. A while ago the computer suddenly overheated for no apparent reason while I was on youtube. The fan got louder than I'd ever heard for five seconds, my fingers got hot and then everything crashed. It's been running noticeably warmer since then for some reason, but there hadn't been any incidents until the time I tried to update the BIOS. The fan sounded the same then.
>>52218615
Noted, thanks.

Incidentally, about that cooling issue in general. Blowing the dust out didn't help, next I'll try replacing the paste and reseating the fan and if that fails, replacing the fan. Anything I should know?
>>
>>52218855
You're paying for the brand when you get a mac.Not the specs. You can get way better specs on a non macbook

I've been ignoring when firefox said that something is outdated or whatever, and just allowed it anyways.

should i be worried

Just return it and get a 15 inch screen, anything less is neck and eye pain.
>>
>>52218998
Nope, it sucks.
Try this for objc basics: http://rypress.com/tutorials/objective-c/
The rest will be on apple's website
>>
>>52219038
That depends on how shady the site is.

Xvideos, Pornhub, xhamster are all 99% safe. It's the sites that open a new tab that redirects through some adserver every time you click a video that you should watch out for.

So I've been thinking about rooting my phone. It's a Samsung galaxy note 3 running on what I believe is lollipop 5.2 or whatever the most recent update to this phone is.
Is it safe to do so? I hear rooting leaves your phone vulnerable to viruses and whatnot. I have an anti virus bit im still not sure. I downloaded kingroot and am now looking for a way to back up my data. Just need to make sure im not doing anything stupid is all.
>>

I want about 30 seconds of this.

But stopping the download deletes what I've downloaded.

Is there any way to just download a part of it?
>>
>>52219048
That anon should get a larger laptop only if they want a better-value CPU, not because of a larger 1366x768 resolution screen.

They should just get a monitor screen if ergonomics are the issue since 15" inch laptops are just going to be awful compromise on portability. Not as bad as 17" laptops of course, but no sane person would ever get those.
>>
>>52219352
Copy the partially downloaded file to a different location while it's downloading before you stop the download.
>>
>>52219402
Doesn't open.

I... don't plan on making my mother a grandmother anyways. BTW I am moving into the basement so I won't need a loft bed anymore.

Am PC repair guy. Back your important shit up. Literally copy and paste to a USB, and throw it in your closet, that easy. Electrostatic discharge is a 1 in a million thing, but it does matter, touch some metal before you start fucking with shit. Google is your enemy, but startpage.com is your best friend. 99% of virus removal is uninstalling shit from control panel before scanning with 2 or 3 anti virus programs. If a piece of hardware doesn't work, 99% of the time it is a driver issue. Windows slow? Check startup items, and uninstall unneeded shit. Works 99% of the time. Or just backup your stuff and reinstall the OS, then download drivers and reimport backed up stuff. Set your software to auto-update, browsers, browser extensions, programs, OS, all that. I saw a guy a few weeks ago with Firefox 4.0 (current version is like 45 or something). XP is kill, Adobe software is kill, Java is kill, AVG is kill. Windows is kill in general. Building a computer is easy, watch YouTube vids for a few hours about how to and read your motherboard manual. Any other questions? StartPage.com

If running 7, No.
If running 8, Yes.
A lot of privacy concerns with 10.
Ideally you would want Linux.
