I'm looking for a good external HDD, preferably 500gb, but I can settle for 250gb if I can't make the price. Better yet if it's just plug and transfer, without proprietary software bullshit.
What are the current /g/ picks?
Pic somewhat related, just a random drive from google.

Was hoping on advice a bit more akin to brand and models, so they don't break 5 minutes after buying.

Just do NOT buy Seagate. Low range Seagate drives are well known to die, i had 2 fail on me.

This.

I'll use it mainly to store big game backups so I don't have to redownload them later cause internet here sucks, and some misc. files here and there. A USB stick probably won't last long at that pace.

WD it is then.

Nothing Seagate, gotcha.
Get a Hgst Travelstar 1tb, slap it into whatever external hdd you find on amazon.

*external hdd shell
Don't buy WD if you ever want to take it apart and repurpose the HDD, it's not a standard sata drive inside.

Have a 2TB My Passport used daily for eighteen months with no issues.

Using a WD Elements 2TB for 2+ years now with no issues. I also heavily seed 2000+ torrents from it for around 8 hours a day.
I bought a WD passport and it died on me within my second use of it. What's worse is the support is outsourced to India so I have Pajeet "shit-in-the-steet" telling me how I have to pay for shipping because they can't build a drive worth two shits. And they can't even make shipping labels right because when I ordered mine they never sent the fucking label. Fuck WD
