Apple doesn't sell OS X, it's free on any mac. OS X is based of of UNIX, linux is also based of of UNIX, the systems have nothing in common with eachother.

But isn't this just using a loophole in Unix's license? Instead of commercializing OS X, they made it free, but put it on a product that you have to buy to actually be able to use it? Shouldn't they actually provide an official link/way to install OS X on other devices that are not Macs?

I don't think you understand how licenses work. Apple is a gigantic company, if they were somehow in violation of some license then you know some freetards would be on them. As far as I know, they fulfill their obligations by contributing to Darwin.

It's based on freeBSD which has it's own unique license which is not truly open sure
