they thought Palm name still means anything despite fact that palm name was already falling down back in palmos5 times, when they introduced some basic multimedia capabilities in their system - when winmo was already capable of doing it way better than palmos was ever able to.
it's a damn shame that so many mobile-oriented OSes are going down just because of ultimate android market ownage. WebOS, BBOS10, even sailfish. On the other hand it's good to have "app standard" as android dalviky java+android api that can be easily ported for different systems (bbos runs android apps, sailfish runs android apps).

android and ios had all the major apps and people were comfortable developing for them
also HP bought palm and ran webOS into the ground, probably just for the patent portfolio knowing full well the OS would fail because of the lack of app+developers
it was a great OS and interesting hardware, i find other manufacturers have only just caught up with webOS's innovations
