It'll be 10 years this year since Intel release the Core 2 Duo Conroe chips.

...And 10 years this year since AMD had a competitive CPU arch.

What Core 2 Duo/Quad did you own, /g/?

I was 12 at the time, I didn't know what SFF was.
E4400 @2Ghz, Radeon x1300 pro

Served me well for 5 years before I built my own, I upgraded it to a q6600 (installed a second fan for the heatsink) and put a 5570 in it.

The HDD died in it so I replaced it with a failing laptop HDD and gave it away to my friend who still uses it to this day. Never expected it to last 10 years desu
>>
>>52191998
Core2's overclocked pretty well. The limit was more often the motherboard. The Northbridge on an overclocked C2D/Q system could get incredibly hot.

It was also the era of the NVidia NForce chipsets. I have a 680i system around here somewhere. It works, but they are very touchy.
>>
>>52191998
>What was overclocking like on this generation of CPUs?

There was no K unlocked bullshit, but you didn't really need it. The only CPUs that were unlocked were the Extreme Edition ones.

It was all about increasing the FSB, which was a bit like the BCLK on Nehalem/Skylake CPUs. There was more difficulty since you only had a very limited number of RAM multipliers, so often you would have to change the RAM timings.

Also the memory controller was on the motherboard so you had to also try to play with the mobo voltage.

They were nothing but trouble. Wish I'd never bought into that shit.

I moved onto an EP45-UD3R, which I believe to be the holy grail of 775 boards. Pulled it from a workstation, lightly used.
>>
>>52192571
I had a P5K. Easy overclocking, no problems or whatsoever since 2007, when I bought it.

It still works to this day.
>>
>>52192628
The EP45 didn't have such a happily ever after. While waiting for a new UPS to arrive, lightning struck the property. A few people were lightly shocked during the discharge, a few electronics were blown out.

The surge suppressor burned out, but saved the EP45. Unfortunately, because I was still waiting on the UPS, the DSL line was unprotected. Modem & Router burned out, ethernet port in the EP45 burned out.

The board still works, but it now has "issues" every now and then. Had to step down to a P35-DS3L.

Yeah, it's not quite up to task anymore, but it's a great second stringer.

A lot of the C2D era boards also wig out if you fill all four RAM slots with 2GB sticks and attempt to overclock.

That's because the memory controller overheats trying to deal with 4 sticks with overclocked FSB.

It's how my motherboard died.

Upper one used to rock an E6750. With an EN9600GT it did run cowadoody MW1 and 2 well back in the day but after those games I pretty much retired it until I got the idea to buy new parts for it.

So now it has a C2Q Q8300, a 7870 and 8 gb of used DDR2 800mhz. Shit still plays battlefield 4 at medium 30-50 fps

Ran a Q6600 for a month or so earlier this year until I replaced it with a Nehalem Xeon box, now that system is going to my grandma to replace her Pentium D 920 and I'm probably swapping the Nehalem workstation out for a Precision with two X5450s.

My first ebin leet gaming rig build had an E8600, but the very thought of that thing triggers me so I'll just leave it at that. I still have the chip in my CPU collection.
