Looking to get a budget build as my main desktop. Main uses would be writing (lots of writing) research, web site design and some light photoshop use. Maybe a bit of video editing in the future but nothing too intensive.
Pic related seems to be a popular processor for poor fags. Will be future proof for at least a few years and good for my uses? Or should I save up a few hundred more sheckles for a Intel build?
The 6300 will be great for what you want.
i3 beats the 6300 in almost every office productivity metric.
Also, insanely low TDP.

I'm using an FX6300 in my living room PC along with an old 2GB GTX 760 and it handles most modern games just fine, so it should be fine for what you want. If you do get one though buy a better cooler, the stock one is god awful. A Hyper 212 Evo is always a good cheap option.
As the other anon has said though, a newer i3 will outperform it for what you want to do at a slightly higher price.

Great CPU choice for what you want, as for the rest of the build this might help.
Modify accordingly

Logical increments is for gaming.
The 6300 is a mediocre gaming CPU, which makes it CPU completely overpowered for tasks like writing and browsing, and the high core count makes video editing a bit faster.

>high core count
>he actually thinks the 6300 is a hexacore
It's has 3 cores (AT BEST).
>>52190993
It has 3 bulldozer modules which each count as 2 cores.
Basically at 'worst' it counts as 3 cores for certain kinds of operations and at best as 6 cores

Any modern CPU is fine for your needs, barring ultra-low-end $30 stuff. You are not really doing anything CPU intensive.

I3 6100 yes, i3 4170 no.
If op already has ram it'll be cheaper to get the fx.

Except for Photoshop and video editing?
OP here. The fx I was looking at was part of a prebuilt that apparently has a trash mobo (760g) so I'm going to keep shopping. I'd like to build my own desktop but I'm sure I'd fuck something up. Budet is $700-$800 CAD

Assuming OP is correct in this.
