You'd be right not to upgrade because they come out with new ones, but pascal is a die shrink to 16nm. Most likely well see a better price performance ratio and defiantly the introduction of HBM.

Certain updates are more important than others - Geforce 8 for example was hugely important, and you could get away with a Geforce 8 GPU for a really long time. Then there were others that were utterly useless - Geforce FX with its pathetic DirectX 9 performance was the opposite of future proof.

Nah, not really. It's just that the 3Dfx team designed Geforce FX (probably why it was called FX heh).

A pretty big disaster for a team with great credentials. But I guess they were redeemed with Geforce 6 and 7 which were based on Geforce FX's arch (but hugely fixed).

I have an FX5500 AGP card sitting in my parts bin. Bought it for $5 at a parts recycler years ago but it would get unstable and lock up after about 30 minutes of use. Figured it was bad caps on the board (confirmed) but still haven't gotten around to recapping it.
