really? tablets sucked before apple announced the ipad and forced competitors to get their shit together. same with smartwatches (which still need to firm up). same with smartphones. same with portable music players.

no laptops had high density screens, and most operating systems had awful support for such screens (meaning no sharper text) until the rMBP came out.

You might hate apple, and I'm not keen on their products myself, but the competition they stoke is necessary. The consumer electronics space would probably crawl forward if Samsung, HTC, etc... weren't trying to top Apple.
>>
>>52165893
>same with smartwatches (which still need to firm up). same with smartphones.
Except they were doing fine before the Apple Watch and the Apple Watch came out as being inferior to the competition.
>>
>>52165893
ARM Tablets are still fucking garbage, smartwatches are even worse.
Also, 1920x1440 and 1920x1200 laptops were always in production since 2002, it only took Apple 10 years to leapfrog it by slightly beating it.

I'll give you the iPhone & iPod though. The 2007 iPhone keynote really was an epic event even as a massive Apple hater.
>>
>>52165913
They were hardly doing fine. Which model do you want to hold up as a competent option? We can both take a look at reviews for that device and find a fatal flaw that it made it non-viable.

This is the case with every product category. Manufacturers seem content putting out shit that has some gross shortcoming that makes it impractical. it's like they don't know what they're aiming for with these devices. in the absence of any user research or anything even resembling that, taking cues from whatever apple comes up with serves as a good-enough surrogate.

>>
>>52165932
>1920x1440 and 1920x1200 laptops were always in production since 2002,
that's not at all what I'm talking about. I'm talking about straight up integer scaling of resolution. 1 pixel becoming a grid of 2x2 or 3x3 or something.

Of course pixel density was increasing (it has been for decades), but 1920x1200 in a 15" laptop doesn't provoke scaling the entire operating system accordingly (or it didn't in Microsoft's eyes, and even *now* some linux DE's don't handle arbitrary scaling all that well). 1920x1200 in a laptop forces you to do interpolation so you can resolve the non-integral scaling issues that 1920x1200 presented.

the notion that other competitors were on their way to scaling the way apple directed it with the rMBP is wishful thinking at best, and zealot thinking at worst. it certainly wasn't visibly on the roadmap for any competitors.
>>
>It's going down
>Sell
You fucking idiot. Now's when you buy. Apple isn't going to die any time soon.
>>
>>52166004
Integer scaling is extremely wasteful on resources especially the way OS X renders UI elements. (3360x2100 virtual on a 2560x1600 LCD), and there's still blurring at scaled resolutions because of this.
Vector scaling is the only way to go and Android and Windows Metro gets it right.
>>
>>52165955
>tablets were amazing and ran real OSs
tablets running desktop OSes are a mess. you either need to completely redesign the operating system (as Microsoft did with Windows, but took literally several full generations before you could even call that a success, and Windows 10 is nothing if not controversial), or you need to design the operating system with the hardware in mind.

I would argue that Microsoft wouldn't have taken the former route, and contrasted Apple's decision to take the latter route, if Apple didn't exist. This is the argument I've been making at the outset - that Apple provokes other companies into responding either by copying the things that work (like making smartphones that don't fucking suck) or by planting a stake in the ground as being diametrically different from them (e.g. MS deciding - after a brief failure with ARM - that the Surface lines and tablets in general should run the same version of Windows that desktops run, and benefit from that software compatibility).

You're clearly really personally angry about this, and I'm assuming you're Steve Wozniak or someone else who has a socially acceptable reason to be this emotionally invested. If that's the case, I'm not sure that we'll ever see eye to eye on this.
>>
>>52163040
What theme?
>>
>>52165955
This. Tablets actually served a purpose back then other than updating facebook.

At least MS got tablets back on track, and lo and behold Apple is right back to pushing out their shitty copy. Too bad for them MS learned that marketing is as important as actually creating products, which explains why Surfaces which are literally the same HP tablets that MS came out with in 2003 outsold iPads 4:1 this last quarter.

>MS got tablets back on track
tablets were stagnant 6 years ago today. they were basically not a product category for everyday consumers. MS's fuckup with Windows 8 shows that they had no clue what they were doing with regard to bringing Windows to tablets, so it's safe to surmise that the iPad's popularity threw them for a loop and they had to get their head back into the game.

Tablets would be a non-category right now if the first gen iPad didn't spark interest.

refusing to grant Apple even that they sparked interest in product categories is probably the most niggardly cowardly thing you can do. i'm not asking you to sign a contract that says you love apple or that their products are even good. i'm staking the claim that apple provokes companies into competing on products and in criteria that they seem unable to come up with on their own.

it took you this long to realize apple stock was shit for 2015?!?! WTF OP?

2014 4th quarter apple got a huge boost in iphone sales because of china letting iphones be sold in china. they lifted the bann but between a currency devaluation and the fact that a few months after apple got that huge boost in sales it was dethroned in china by a crowd funnded smart phone project in china. they got beat by a kickstarter

apple tv flopped. apple watches are junk. retina displays dont mean shit for gaming or even watching movies and tv since they dont broadcast anything at 4k resolution

apple mostlikely cant reach its peak of last years 4th quarter when it set a new record for market cap. by comparison the difference will probably be damning. its x amount less profitable than it was last year

any smart person would side step that shit well before any damage to wealth occurs. so like every bank who has shares, all politicians who have shares, all hedge fund managers who have shares for themselves or clients ect

My biggest concern holding onto them is just how big a nosedive their marketing has taken since Cook took over. He's a great CEO, but too much of a sperg to prioritize marketing over operations.

Even so, the apple watch is what really fucked them this year, and writing off a company after one bad year is the rookie mistake of rookie mistakes. x86 processors are going to become mobile ready in the next 2-3 years, so that means there will be a massive revamp of OS X and iOS. With smart appliances becoming the norm, all they have to do to save three dying product lines is merge the apple tv, mac mini, and airport and market them as retard proof home servers where consumers can run anything in their home off their iphones.

If they fuck all of that up, I'll dump my stock, but I think the next few years will actually be a good time to buy, personally. Consumer electronic companies are typically shit investments, but apple is one of the few that's been consistently good. It's still no Intel or Oracle in terms of holding in the long term though.

From my stand point wait untill the summer or beginning of fall to sell that's when they start selling shit and stock goes up. My theory is with Tim Cuck around he'll slow the growth of the company to a near stop. Honestly if Steve was still around I believe he could've gotten the stock tl be around 140-150 by now. So just hold for now. The beginning of the year is always a tough time for stocks.
>>
Apple is run by a bunch of junior marketing hacks who dont know shit about technology and expect profits to come in like their rich daddy's trust fund checks. Behind all the marketing hype Steve Jobs was actually a pragmatic designer. The people who run Apple now are oblivious to that. Apple deserves to die, the stupidity of marketing toward mindless exclusivity deserves to be punished. Apple was a decent company while Jobs was alive. There are still smart people working at Apple who are going to watch everything they build get destroyed because the company product line got turned into the hipster meme that was only meant as a marketing ploy by Jobs
