>>
I used to have a case /cpu/power supply fan fetish. Rip them all out just to have. Still do these days but now i buy them.
>>
>>52145006
Always wondered where those cheap ebay Xeons were coming from.
>>
I have a job and don't need to steal things. RAM is like $30 for an 8GB stick these days, so unless you're ultrapoorfag there's no real reason to steal RAM.
>>
>>52145006
Most competent leaders will have the scrapping/recycling of electronics factored into the budget before they even bought said electronics.
>>
>>52145248
The cheap Xeons are just from companies that decommissioned equipment. When you upgrade your servers and don't plan on keeping the old equipment around (there's usually no point) you have to get rid of it somehow, so it's either sell it yourself on eBay or send it to a salvage company, which will also probably just sell it on eBay.
>>

you haven't seen our clients
not to mention the government contracts that require hardware swaps at timed intervals.

I stole a whole dell optiplex mini desktop in highschool
I still use the i5-2400 that was in it today
>>
Used to work for a guy who ran his own "E-waste" company, basically go around collecting computers and other random electronics.
I built some computer with an i5 till the mobo took a shit. best job ever, got so much free shit and high end gfx cards.
Also a fuckton of hard drives, no one ever deletes shit on them, but I just wiped them anyway since Idgaf.
>>
>>52145316
Goddamn, I wish I had that shit when I was in high school. Most of out shit were bargain basement Pentium 4 boxes from Dell. I was just thankful some of them were wired for internet access, good times pulling shit from my home FTP server.

Oh well, at least my poorfag school district gave me a chance to use some Apple II and Macintosh machines in elementary and middle school.
>>
>>52145393
I remember IBM machines being used in my district until about 2004, then the OptiPlex upgrades came in.

When I was in HS my nignog friend convinced me to steal 9400 GTs from a bunch of computers that were decomissioned for some reason.
We also managed to steal some Asus monitors somehow.

Not OP, but I have a bunch of ram laying around.

Some SO-DIMMs and some DIMMs,

I have 4x2GB sticks that are at like 667mhz, so It's not worth me putting them in my PC.

Anything fun I could do with them?

I stole so much shit in high school

>probably 8 or 10 gigs of DDR2 dimm sticks from desktops
>A bunch of sodimm ram from laptops, a 128gb SSD from the same laptop (replaced the ssd with a spare shitty failing hard drive), sold both later
>Spare hard drives, keyboards, mice
>A whole desktop (Well actually the school gave me that one)
>So much software, Windows XP disks with keys, Windows 95, Adobe photoshop, premier, several versions of Office, Visual Studio, Old Visual Basic CDs etc

I was actually one of the "good kids" at school too, volunteered with a lot of things, picked up trash, donated books to the library, ran a club, I just had a bit of a kleptomaniac streak

why would you do that? they're dirt cheap. go buy a bag of them from monoprice or something.
>>
When my highschool was updating all their software for the drafting and design classroom i was able to get 28 copies of autocad 2009 in their cases with keys.

Roughly 40 grand worth of software (if it was still 2009) because of the life-long licenses.

I was also given an iMac they thought was broken. All that was wrong was that the cable from the main board to the screen had been bumped out of place.
>>
>>52144922
I've unstolen RAM. Worked for a dying company where the standard install was a Pentium 4 desktop with XP and 1GB.

After a month, I got so fed up with it that one day I pulled another 2x512MB out of one of my own decommissioned/parts machines at home, brought it to work, and installed it at work at lunch under the guise of blowing out the dust from the case. Everyone just wondered why my machine never lagged like theirs.
>>
>>52147650
lol how were you gonna sell them, on craigslist?
>28 copies of autocad, $1000 per, text or email only
>>
>>52145388
This. I snatched an entire server rack from 2011 because some company thought it's better to throw servers after the 3 year warranty expires. It was a Poweredge r810 with 16gb of ram, 8 SAS drives of 250/750gb and 2x Xeon 5500.
First time I really tinkered with server racks and having my own was just amazing overall. Glad my boss was too much of a smug cunt thinking his own server was better ( some old ass shit from 2005 with the equivalent computing power of a C2D and 4x75gb SCSI drives )
Don't really know how much worth it would have been but I'd reckon it was in the high thousand euros at the time
>>
>>52147945
I sold a bunch of them on ebay for about 400$ each, they sold fucking fast.

That funded my current work computer.

Oh of course, i sold them individually with slightly different descriptions over the course of a month or so.

And even then i didnt sell exactly 28, i still have 7 of them lying around, 2 i use and 5 just in a box with some other software i own.
>>
>>52147650

i7 975
i7 4770k
GTX 680
various sticks of ram
ssds and hdds ranging from 120gb to a 600gb raptor

All of it was to be scrapped. I just tell my boss what I'm taking from the junk room and it's all good. Most of it is still working because our tech support guys can't diagnosis anything for shit and just shotgun parts at systems.

I've got a slot Pentium 3 in the loft, you can play the heatsink like a musical instrument.
>>
>>52145807
Double edged sword. I stumbled upon my dads dickpics one time.

At least I know I'm bigger.
>>
>>52148749
Yeah what the hell was the point of having that there? Were some places actually locking those to stop people using the floppy drives? For us though it was just a silly thing to play with while in computer class.
>>
>>52148799
Btw here's what it looks like with the tray opened. But yeah anyone know of anywhere that actually would lock those?
>>
>>52148785
they actually sold converter boards for the P3 if you bought the die version. a little board with the socket on it, then mounted into the mainboard slot.

>>52148799
I dunno man, my school thought it would prevent me from loading Oregon Trail. they were wrong.
>>
>>52148851
Oh so some schools really did lock the fronts up?
>>
>>52148883
you could force it open anyway, the lock was worthless
>>
>>52148851
I'm pretty sure the motherboard was designed for small form factor so that could explain it. A load of old PC's were being junked so I just grabbed the good stuff like processors and RAM.
>>
>>52148902
Yeah I figured as such I don't think my schools ever used it or barely used it I mostly just remember playing with it sometimes out of boredom.

eventually the computer lab had the doors removed, as kids were doing that en masse to piss off their teacher.
>>
>>52149026
Sure would make CPU installing easier if they were still in cartridge slots.
>>
>>52149166
but then the traces become longer, the slot connectivity becomes an issue, and heat dissipation is harder as the coolers would sit against the motherboard.
>>
>>52149026
Slotkets were so weird. I feel like the dimension restraints of them were one of the reasons that water cooling started.
>>

>stealing RAM
Let me guess, you also steal plastic sporks from fast food chains
>>
>>52149404
I'd imagine so.
VW beetle and Mini radiators were part of some of the first PC watercooling setups, due to their small size and low cost. Interestingly, I saw a guy on YouTube use a small radiator as an intercooler for his supercharged mini. It was stolen off a Corsair H80. We've gone full circle.
>>
>>52149496
lol. i remember the first waterblocks being aluminum heatsinks encased in PVC blocks and brass nipples to hook whatever up to them.

i had a 5 gallon bucket full of water wetter cooling a overclocked AMD K6-2 350mhz. no need for a radiator at that volume, just had to make sure the cat didn't drink it.

This.

I used to work at staples and I have a bucket full of flash drives, and a drawer filled with ram and hard drives. I also have some quad core intel cpus, an i3, and a whole desktop computer that they were going to junk. I've nabbed various tablets and laptops that I sold on ebay. All of them required minor repairs though but I did pull a solid profit on all of them but a nexus 7.

I miss that job solely for 'recycling' old tech.
