Fixed keyboard means you need to keep an inventory of multiple keyboards for the different markets you hope to sell the device in. Worse if any of them have a different shape to the keys.

All for a device you're hoping people will upgrade from to your new device in a year or two.

Smartphones just treat you like a retard I guess. Lots of old PDAs and early smartphones treated you more like a professional, they were oriented more towards improving your life instead of plastering it all over the internet, they weren't trying to pander to people who base their sense of self worth on how many meaningless trends their plastic abides by.

Sure, there's a little nostalgia google bullshit talking there, but honestly, I don't really care anymore. There's something about the "feel" of modern smartphone operating systems that just really put me off.

I got a minidisc player back when hard drive MP3 players were still expensive, and flash-based players topped out at 512 MB. The prospect of having upwards of 5 hours of music on a $1.50 reusable was very appealing. And it ran seemingly forever on a single AA battery. If it weren't for the beyond full-retard software, I might still use it to this day.

Those meme devices were interesting and all, but honestly touch typing had grown in me and CM13 with F-Droid software and no Gapps feels great.
I wouldn't mind having a hardware keyboard and desktop Linux in my pocket, but it's not utilitarian and not quite comfy to use with one hand.

First they fell behind the development when the rest of the industry followed iphone's example.

Then when they were about to catch up, elop came.

The media went full retard here in Finland
>what Finland needs to develop are leaders from other countries, because Finland doesn't have good leaders
>Finland needs to internationalize their companies
>elop will lead Nokia to new heights
>Microsoft will lead Nokia to new heights
>Nokia will become the third largest phone manufacturer instead of the second largest, which is great because the market for shit phones is so big
>Nokia will surely survive by selling map and gps services. Finland is the leader in digital maps technology!

It was both fun and sad to see happen.

You'll laugh at me for saying this but the primary reason palmpilots and the like never took off is because their UX sucked in a lot of ways, particularly if the user wasn't technically inclined, and they were terrible at handling any kind of visual content (web, documents, books, etc).

A big success factor that people don't cite when speaking of the rise of the iPhone and smartphones was how these devices handled the web. They were really the first instance of any sort of hand-held web browser that wasn't a miserable joke, and as it turns out, people liked that.

On the upside, thanks to the prevalence of smartphones handheld mobile tech has improved quite dramatically. If someone tried creating a modern PalmPilot/Treo, they could a hell of a lot better job than anybody prior to 2007 could have even imagined. We now have super-efficient ARM SoCs that challenge Core 2 Duos, beautiful screens, and tiny, ultra-efficient wireless chipsets. All the pieces are there.

>>
>>52138738
I still have mine with a custom ROM somewhere around. The screen is slightly cracked, and some of the back is peeled off, due to daily use in somewhat questionable conditions (I remember I had it with me while I was hiking on a mountain in Germany, good times) but it was really neat.

I had the developer's edition with those neat patterns and the little Android on the back, it's kinda cute.

>>52140810
I don't really disagree with that at all actually. Web browsing was something of an afterthought on those when you think about it, they were always optimized more for offline personal organization jobs.

Palm OS' UI isn't too technical though if you ask me, it's quite like modern smartphones, just made with a stylus in mind rather than touch.
>>
>>52140810
Considering there's been over 40 models made by Palm (and much more made by other makers,) they most definitely did "take off." Its eventual downfall ironically was what made it initially great.
Everyone was trying to cram a full computer into a handheld touch screen device, resulting in a technically capable, but overall shitty device. Palm said fuck that, we're stripping this down to perform a handful of core functions, and perform them extremely well.
Problem came in that over time, technology got to where you really could cram a full computer into a handheld device that ran pretty well.

One thing I never really got though is for a device that's imagined around a notepad motif, it did not come with a doodling application. You'd think that would be an obvious thing to inlclude. Unless they were worried people would forego Graffiti and just write their notes directly.

I have no idea. They were tough, they were super portable, their discs took up less space, and devs were able to squeeze amazing graphics out its little 400Mhz PPC G3. I was always amazed at how much better the GC version of RE4 looked than its PS2 and PC counterparts for example.

IMO it was a far more practical console than the Xbox ever was. I still think had Microsoft not slurped up Bungie and changed Halo from being a Mac game (like all Bungie stuff preceding) to being MS-exclusive, the Xbox would've flopped hard and Microsoft would still be a boring office software company today.

"Burning Platform" was early 2011. Elop picked the wrong fucking platform, ruined Nokia, and sold it to Microsoft instead of adapting Android like every other fucking smartphone maker. NOBODY else was Windows phone exclusive, and it sunk Nokia.

Burning platform? You're still standing on one, Microsoft/Nokia. Burned plenty of bridges with consumers on the way there though.

This is what saddens me the most abouy modern mobile devices. I had a ton of fun little games and useful programs for Palm, almost all of it was free, and absolutely none of it had A(I)DS. People then actually cared about having something useful and/or fun. Today's devices are little more than handheld billboards.

There are plenty of Android tablets with controllers, phones are a different story.
>>
>>52133431
Oh boy did it suck. Still have mine kicking around somewhere.

Basically, they screwed two phones, each with their own processor, together to create the illusion. Then, they used to fold together in a way where they were just stacked. Not clamshell, but actually stacked.

Then, the "two apps at one time" thing was of course limited to only 10 apps. Luckily youtube and messenger were included, but onlybthe shitty stock email client.

Furthermore, these individual phones were underpowered, and the overall unit suffered the delay of communication/synchronization between the two. Not a fun experience.

You also have that extended monitor issue. Would the app run on one large, virtual screen where the seam is like a window frame that cuts off content? Or will the screen disorient you by pushinc content to eother side of the seam, cutting content in half. Will the weird double screen resolution work eith the app display resolution?

This can only be known by trial and error. Guess how many developers decided to support this device?
>>
I had one of those in high school back in the days. It was amazing! The only problem was the heat which was resulting in reboot once in a while. Annndd the weight. Yet as my first tablet/multimedia player this was amazing! I really liked the how simple the interface was and how solid the build was. I do remember that i was downloading porn directly from the webplayer with no prob. The screen was so bright and colorful. Mine burn after 1year but it was worth. 10/10

Sure, if you ignore reality and pretend Symbian hadn't went down like the fucking Hindenburg. He sold a flailing company whose strongest asset was their brand, and he did it for a solid block of hard cash. And that was on top of the promise that they'd get the Nokia trademark for Smartphones back down the line. I don't think you get how good a deal that was.

RIM/Blackberry _wish_ they could have gotten that sort of hail Mary. A lot of companies wish they could be in a position to say "Our platform and core offering went from 50% of the market to less than 5% in two years, let's cash out and buy Alcatel fucking Lucent".

Amazing OS, amazing devices. Got impressed by the idea of integration between those two devices. Touching FRONT (not back, another unique thing) of the tablet with phone - exchanging data, eg. current website.
