Yes, I did. "I'm da lawyer, yo" was my old namefag.
Now I'm easy findable in any Subway's vegetables section. (Although I truly pick my new namefag from Gianni Agnalli.)

>>52102150
However, there seems to be a mistake. There are only seven of this kind in each color, red a white.

I took a full year sabatical and went exploring the world. I just came back from a two month trip to India.

Oh.. My bad.
Glad to have you back, though.
I'd really like one of those, but the price tag is also bit more hefty, if I recall correctly.
>>
Saw a Timex Weekender and a newer G-Shock at my local thrift shop. The Weekender was $8, the GS was $10.

Should I have dropped the hammer?
>>
For the anon who had the tisell bauhaus watch, how does it wear? I feel like 38mm is a bit big for something that's all dial. I have 6.75in wrists, so I'm on the fence as to whether it'd be too big or not.

Question from a total casual, /g/:

I got a few dots of white spray paint on my crystal while I was touching up my desk in the workshop. Will wiping them off with an acetone rag mess with my exterior AR coating?

The strap was new and wouldn't stay tightened.
It's better now, don't worry.
>>
>>52103358
I just like how natos and zulus fasten, I have no strong opinion about the loopover. You could cut your straps to size if you got a nato and it bothered you

Or did you mean a NATO strap on a USSR watch
>>
>>52103245
If it's the BFK pictured it almost certainly doesn't have any sort of AR coating.
>>
>>52102602
There's no red dial peacock, and I wanted the peacock.
>>
>>52103460
Oh, right. I should have specified. I did a crystal swap for domed sapphire.
>>
>>52103483
Ok, in that case only the inside is likely to be coated
>>
>>52103401
The loopover looks kinda weird to me.

I'm not autistic enough to care about a NATO strap on a USSR watch, at least not when it fits that fucking good.

>>52103391
Looks great, if I get a Komandirskie it would probably that one, but I'm not sure anymore since I read that it can gain 20-60sec/day, and I have no fucking clue about how to regulate it.
>>
>>52103508
It's interior/exterior coated. I should be good to just lightly clean the top, I bet.
>>
>>52103509
Mine does run about that fast each day, I'm just too lazy to take it to a watchmaker. I'm more goncerned about getting my Wakmann fixed first. But thanks! It's actually a lot nicer than I imagined for $36, definitely some of the best bang per buck of hand-wound mechs.
>>
>>52102829
My first watch. Got it as a gift from my mother like 18 years ago because I found the running way displayed funny.

I still love it. Good chrono, great for running with the pace function and accurate, just checked, 4 seconds gain in 2 weeks. If it had backlight it would be perfect for me.
>>
>>52103525
Acetone is likely to damage or remove that coating but the inside one is probably more important so it shouldn't be a huge difference.
>>
>>52103669
I really like to see people holding on to the same timepiece for decades. Good for you, anon. I bet that watch has been great over your lifetime.

>>52103678
I thought as much. Thanks!
>>
Any watchmaker anons here? I bought a Kirovskie today for $6 and it goes and stops. Naturally someone overwound it and ofcourse it has to be shaken to make it work. Until it stops. The dial is lovely yet dirty
>>
>>52104331
Just use it as an automatic with a very short power reserve and shake your arm all day.
>>
>>52104331
Sounds like it just needs a new mainspring
>>
>>52104331
But the mechanism is pristine - except it doesnt really work. I thought about buying a Vostok 2409 since its basically the same as Poljot 2408 or the 1MF3 16 jewels in diameter and height... So would it work?
>>
>>52104382
Is it interchangeable with perhaps 2409?
>>
>>52104441
>>52104388
Not sure. Take it to a watchmaker before buying a different movement to franken into it.

Anybody here know where I can send a mid 60's ladies Omega Seamaster Cosmic for service - it runs for a day or two and then the movement freezes and can only be restarted by pulling the crown and changing the time.

It's a 552 movement and requires a Tool 102 to open.

They are owned by the same company that owns Jacques Lemans, but unlike Jacques Lemans which is made in Switzerland (well, mostly, kinda sorta), they don't say where they are made. Considering that JL is a discount brand to begin with, Orphelia is another step down. Mineral crystal, basic quartz movement (Ronda 515, which is decent).

It's a watch.

What you guys think of the 300 Seamaster? A good first Swiss or should I go with a Plebmariner instead?
>>
>>52116060
The Plebmariner has no style, you might as well buy a milsub homage and save money. At least the 300 has some interest to it.

But if you'd like to try something different, get a Blancpain 50 Fathoms/Bathyscaphe. Can't get more original than the original

legitmate question, why do people like these vostok watches so much? Is it a /wt/ meme?
>>
>>52119719
Maybe they're good watches, cunt.
>>
>>52119719
they're
1. cheap w/ good features for the price (reasonable accuracy especially if regulated, great water resistance)
2. interesting compared to most other comparably cheap watches
3. different from most other watches (funky, retro-ish designs)
4. lots of options for aesthetics, easy to change the look up plenty (so you can get one that looks less funky and then change up bezel and bracelet for an even more normal look, if you're not in it for the weird look)

For me personally its a combination of those all.

>>52119890
>20-60sec/day
that isn't what the movement is capable of, that is what it'll do out of the factory. regulate it yourself and it'll be equal to any cheap mechanical watch (approx)

but yeah its not like I love Vostok because its ~objectively the best~, I enjoy the fiddly way of theirs, the aesthetic and the history. I don't mind any of the flaws.

No personal experience, but from what I've read, among the small niche manufacturers they're supposed to be really good. Halios makes one batch of a particular model at a time, and after a couple of production runs of a certain watch, they stop making it. Each model they come out with is reputedly well-thought out, with few if any of the shortcomings typically found among the smaller- less-experienced watch outfits.

Miyota 9015, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, 500mWR...

The only shortcoming I came across for the Delfin was that it lacked drilled lugs. And all of that for 650USD.

I'm sort of the same.

Even if I had a lot of money to spend on watches, I'd probably just continue on collecting relatively cheap ruskies.

Tho I guess I might start going for some vintage models, get them fixed, mod them exactly to my liking and so on, but I doubt I'd ever go too expensive.

Even now, I'd rather have 5 russians than a single SARB.

That said I can appreciate plenty of luxury pieces, but they rarely give me the "I want to actually wear that every day" kind of feeling. They're not my style.

If it was at least Vostok 2416b quality then I'd be impressed, but that Sistem51 movement is a piece of shit. The only other movement I've ever seen with a plastic lever and escape wheel was some shitty, disposable, no-jewels, Hong-Kong made, 80's pin-lever movement that used a single top plate instead of bridges.

TL; DR: Swatch leaped into the future of 1980's Hong Kong. Kowloon was cyberpunk as fuck though.

It might not be much, but because it is 'the first of its kind' I do expect good condition, first generation examples to raise in price over time.

The main reason that I don't think the prices will raise to anything amazing anytime soon is because watches like that may be more common in the future, and watch collectors are often interested in buying watches for reasons that contradict the sistem51. Many people enjoy knowing that their watch was assembled and worked on by very skilled hands.

Pilot watch? Because that means pilot chronographs as well.

But the other one I can think of is the SNK80x series. A lot of people think of them as field watches but they're really a hybrid between field watches and fliegers.

maybe Laco if I wanted to spend midtier funds. the hamilton looks like ass, not in keeping with a flieger at all.

Orient is fine but the applied logo also fucks with the traditional flieger design

Maybe you just don't like the right kind of watches for that? I like weird Russian watches for example, most of them are cheap. Dull I wouldn't call them. There are also collectors focusing on G-Shocks etc.

That said, its easy imagine anyone with a less-than-quite-impressive income genuinely preferring a steinhart to a rolex and so on. If you're not really rich enough to ~just~ buy luxuries, you might not really want to have to stress about 8k strapped to your wrist.

No, THOSE TWO derivative designs are utter garbage that look horrible compared to a classic flieger design and which rely entirely on pleb catching people who don't know what fliegers are supposed to look like.

If I had for a Rolex and a Grand Seiko, GS would easily be my choice, rolex has no class or dial work, wits just trash compared to what seiko does.

And spring drive>automatic for daily use.

I haven't actually looked into spring drive much, is there an explanation similar to the OP video anywhere? I read the wiki but it doesn't really explain it very graphically.

Its a mechanical watch that uses battery and additional quartz element in order to correct itself so it would be precise as possible.

Looks a lot better than the Hammy, but the Hammy has a bracelet. But yeah the Steinhart is more true to the flieger, but these watches won't be used for war

I'm fairly new to watch collecting and i need some general advice on which brands to avoid and trust to get the best quality out of watches. I have a budget of around $500, i was told for a good starter watch to get the Hamilton Khaki Automatic, any thoughts, advice and experiences?

You could get a steinhart ocean one vintage auto mech.
>>
>>52127245
It's okay. It will all be over soon
>>
>>52127165
Start by looking at some designs and features you like, then do a bit of background research.

The problem with the Hamilton Khaki auto is that it's too big and thick to be a decent field watch (which is what it's supposed to represent). If you like the look, try getting the Khaki Mechanical, which is smaller (38mm diam, 8mm thickness) and closer to the original Vietnam-era form.

The designs am into really varies. The thing I like about the Khaki is its historical background to the watch like when it was used in the field, plus it seems to be a pretty perfect watch for its price which I like. The other styles am into are a few divers but mainly dress watches and some skeleton/open heart watches, possibly some vintage watches too. One thing all my styles have in common is that they're all either automatic or mechanical, the few exceptions I'd make are watches like the Belova Accutron Spaceview. Anything that has good craftsmanship I admire.

Also is this the Khaki your talking about?

Yes, that's the one.

If you're into autos and mechanicals, you should take some time to learn about good movements at reasonable prices. The Hamilton Khaki Mechanical, for example, uses an ETA 2804-2, which is (basically) a handwind only version of the 2824-2. It allows the watch to be much thinner and lighter.

The big problem with a lot of modern autos is that they tend to be rather large and thick. That's fine for a diver, but a field watch or a dress watch should be thinner.

Anyways, there are good, inexpensive movements put out by the Swiss (ETA 2824-2, Sellita SW220-1), the Japanese (Seiko's various types like the 4r36, Miyota's 82xx and 9015), so if you see a watch with one of them, you should have a reasonable expectation of performance. Moving up a level of quality to things like the ETA 2892-A2, various Seiko high end movements and the Sellita SW-300 will give you a more interesting and precise movement, but there is a cost associated.
>>
>>52128568
Thanks for the great advice I'll definitly look into the different types of automatic movements, this is the best advice I've gotten yet.

Is there one convenient website that covers all about different movements like Wikipedia or just research from multiple websites and learn what i can?
>>
>>52128676
Online searching will help, but Watchbase can get you started:

http://watchbase.com/calibers
It has information about individual movements- enough to get you started. If you find a watch you like- find the movement, check that page out, and check out bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements (search for it, I don't know if I can paste the URL here).

That should get you started.

You sir, are fucking amazing, thanks for the brilliant advice!
>>

Perfect.
>>
>>52128824
The other place to check out is the manufacturer's website. For example, Ronda has a comprehensive database on all their movements, complete with specs. The Ronda 515 is a good basic quartz movement:

http://www.ronda.ch/en/quartz-movements/quartz-essentials/ronda-powertech-500/caliber/515/

But if you look around a bit, you'll see that there's a much better option- the Ronda 715:

http://www.ronda.ch/en/quartz-movements/quartz-essentials/ronda-normtech-700-6000/caliber/715/

The Swiss made movement is repairable, and has an end-of-life indicator (it lets you know when the battery is about to die). The Swiss parts version is simpler (this one is made from parts overseas).
>>
>>52128923
Your advice is fucking amazing, I've saved all your links. Anything else? Am taking all the advice i can possibly take.

Anything that stops me investing money into something that can be potentially shit, right?
>>
>>52129080
Check around the big watch forums- Watchuseek, tz-uk, thedivewatchconnection, etc. Try to go to the more technical parts of the forums to learn more:

http://forums.watchuseek.com/f6/

In general, if you start with good reputable companies you'll do alright. That's why so many people here suggest Seiko to start out with. They make nice movements and apply good quality control.
