Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Looks pretty cozy in there.

I usually post the OPs, I didn't do the last 2 but the change of OP image was nice.

Seeing the same /tpg/ image all the time was getting stale, so I've decided to follow suit.

Where should I buy batteries?
Are knockoff brands okay or should I stick to official ones?
>>
>>52089874
Why does everyone talk about the smell? I have not noticed any weird smells with my thinkpads, old or new.

New thinkpads are OK, they are going to be very expensive if you buy them straight from Lenovo, but if you can find them used or on sale on third party sites, it might be a good deal. I know a guy who got a new mid range T450 for less than $500 on sale somewhere.
>>
>>52089987
Most people will tell you to stay away from chink batteries, but if you are not expecting much, a chink 9cell for $35 is a lot more appealing than a new 9cell for $100+. I have had good experiences with the 9cell Anker that I purchased for my X201, but I am sure others will differ.

If you are able to, look for low cycle used batteries on eBay, you may be able to find them for the same price or cheaper than the Chinese batteries.

Also, I am just wondering if anyone here has actually cracked open their batteries and swapped out their 18650 cells for new ones? How did it work? where there any issues with the non-genuine cells?
>>
>>52090104
I got fucked the last time I got cheap batteries. The ultrabay battery I bought for my X300 started at 80% and was down to 60% within a couple weeks. Should I just chance it with cheap shit again?

>>52090151
seems aight. are the rubber tabs next to the keyboard there or gone? i paid about that much for an i5/4GB/500gb HDD with one missing tab
>>
My friend has an L420 Sandy Bridge i5 that I can get cheap, but the guide says to avoid them as they're not as good as the T and X series. What's wrong with them?

I've had a few X series and T400 before, and this L420 seems just as well built and looks like a similar machine.

Should I get it or steer clear?
>>
>>52090145
If you feel like it would be worth it to get the genuine battery, go ahead. I cannot make that decision for you though.
>>
>>52090151
I think you could pay less and get more. $340 is X230t range.
>>
>>52090208
cheaper internals, keyboard, lower specs, less modular for repairs/upgrades. a t420 is like $200 easily, if you can't pay that much for a laptop then you've got other issues and should probably just take what your friend has
>>
>>52090208
L series are made cheaper, and lack the build quality of the T series, but they are not bad machines. Just not awesome.
>>
>>52090243

>>
Any of you guys use an egpu with a t430 with nvs card? I am looking into it, but I read that you have to disable the nvs card in order for it to work, but I would like to avoid doing that.
>>
>>52090256
I can afford a T420 no problem, just didn't know if this was worth picking up as it's cheap, £70
>>
>>52090268
The keyboard on the X230 is not bad feeling, it just lacks the 7 rows. With the X230t you also get a nicer iGPU and better power consumption.

Good choice. People hate on the R series, but the R60, R61, and R400/500 are really nice in my opinion. The thicker build and rougher plastic really make it very nice.
>>
>>52090330
Idk mine has never smelled even my old t42 didnt. It smells like fruits right now.
>>
>>52090330
Eh, thats not great. If you can't handle the smell though, you must have other problems, and I don't think those will be fixed by using a newer thinkpad.

In a desktop, SSDs are pretty much a meme, all they do it increase boot speeds and data transfers, which are not unbearable on a HDD anyways, and that is rarely worth the huge price hike to get an SSD, but on a laptop they also decrease noise, heat, and power usage, which makes them very worth it.
>>

So I switched the keyboards between my T410s and my W520 because I liked the feel of the T410s one much better and I use the W520 far more often. I noticed, however, that despite being physically identical, the one that was previously installed in the T410s draws 1 mA while the one that was in the W520 draws 7 mA. I can't even fucking figure out why because they're completely and utterly interchangeable otherwise.

Should I be worried about using the higher current keyboard in the T410s?

>>52090454
We got these at work. Pretty OK all things considered, and as an accountant I appreciate the numpad, but I would not go out of my way to buy one over any other business laptop. They just really have nothing special to offer other than above-average build quality.
>>
What are some good Express Cards things to get for my x230? I'm only finding usb 3.0 ones. Also, are those chink ebay express cards good?

Second question: what are some good software packages for my thinkpad? I know there's some kind of fan control out there, for example.

A good list of thinkpad dedicated osftware would be nice to have on the OP.
>>
>>52090145
Hey how much of a boost were you getting with the ultrabay battery? I have a x301 and I've been debating if it's worth it to get one or not.
>>
Where can I get ram? for x220
>>
>>52090637
If the batteries were at full capacity, I'd get about 5-6 hours from a main battery and 3 hours from the ultrabay, but the shitty one I got is only about 2 hours. Well, it was, but it's even worse now.
If you can get one in good condition they're good, they have about 60% the capacity of an 8-cell main battery.
>>
>>52090544
These completely shit the bed when you're trying to transfer large files- I'm not exaggerating when I say a 7200 RPM hard drive would be faster. Actually, write performance in general is about the same as a 7200 RPM hard drive. Sure you get faster read speeds but honestly it is just terrible.

I'm using optimus with the k2100 on the w541 to speed up the adobe shit when I'm not on battery and it rarely ever fucks up (as in shit switches back after coming back from sleep mode - you need to restart the application so it'll use the correct gpu again. this happens like once a month)
It's pretty straightforward: you set a preferred gpu to run a program with (unless there's already a preset for it) or you just override it by 'right click - run with gpu'. perfect for a laptop like the w541 that would drain the 9 cell battery in like a hour using the quadro. it's also completely fanless when using the hd4600

>>52090714

If you can take 15", then the 1080p TN panel in the W530 kicks the shit out of a lot of Lenovo's other IPS attempts. You can get one for about 400-500 Britbux if you look around on eBay for a bit, although you may need to buy a UK main cable to run from the power supply to the wall.

I haven't had problems with third parties for the most part. I had maybe 4 third party batteries that worked fine, one had failed but it was for an A31p and I believe that was just an old ass battery.

It is best to buy from a seller who has a warranty of some sort, just don't buy third party if you got a Ivy bridge machine or newer.

I don't like 3rd party AC adapters, I don't recommend them at all, OEM/Genuine chargers can be bought for under $20 unless you need a W series unit.
Also I have bought the adapter that uses the regular barrel thinkpad chargers to be used for the rectangle models e.g. T431, X1C3, Twist.
Best eight bucks I spent.

>>52090208
L series are a step above than the Edge series.
I think that model suffers from a bad speaker cable, so it might go out.
Just check how much they get sold for on eBay before buying.
Don't throw a low price, your friendship is always be worth more than money.

My brother has an L420 because both he and my dad were too cheap to spring for a T420.

Overall the computer is not bad, but there are a few disadvantages compared to a T-series. Firstly, there is no latch, and the hinges seem to go soft after not that much time. Unless the computer is at a precise angle, the screen will just flop backwards.

The port placement is shit. There is nothing anywhere on the back, no excuse for that; at least the power port should have gone there. USB ports are clustered near the front of the computer like on a consumer laptop.

The keyboard is also only a six-row affair, not a 7-row. Sort of a moot point now that Lenovo has utterly destroyed the old 7-row order, but if you are going to get one of the machines from that generation, why not get the proper keyboard?

Overall the thing would have to be really damn cheap for me to consider it, personally. Like less than $150.

I bought this t420 from my coworker for 100 bucks, worked fine, but the left touchpad mouse button was sticking, and I was seeing tons of dirt and shit under the keys.

So I just took it apart, cleaned a fucking fur coat out of my keyboard, cleaned the shit out of my touchpad buttons, all with 70% isopropyl. Now I put it back in after letting them dry for about 45 minutes

I heard of some chinks doing some stuff to connect an external gpu via an expresscard port, but I am dubious as to how well that worked. If you're the type to give business presentations, you could get one of these to have a portable laser point and clicker for powerpoints: http://www.amazon.com/Presenter-Mouse-Express-Laptops-MG-303-01-002-01/dp/B000UY4YAI/

Oi, if I were to replace the discrete graphics card in my W500 will I still be able to have switchable graphics, or will that be lost, to me?

I find that the stock discrete graphics for this laptop aren't good enough to flawlessly play my online game from 2005 at 1280x768 res, which is the lowest 16:9 res thee game offers and the lowest I'm willing to go, so it's not the best. When I first got this thing I just straight ran dban and reinstalled 7 cause I'd fucked up the graphics drivers the first time, and the second time around only used the ones provided in Windows Update. It gives me switchable graphics, and they work as intended, but I'm wondering if a different discrete graphics card altogether will break it again.

If I can still go into the bios to change from integrated graphics to discrete graphics that'd be well enough, but idk how to check if even that'd be possible. Maybe I'm just dumb. sorry.

ATI or Intel graphics? What OS?

ATI is housefire-tier. Full stop. I could never cool it off under Linux but in XP/7 if you installed ATI's CCC software, you could turn down the GPU clock speed.

Look into PHC (Linux) or RMClock (Windows). It's a lot of reading, but you can undervolt that C2D processor and get better temps and battery life. GPU would still run hotter under Linux but you could take some of the workload off the cooling system by turning down the CPU temps. RMClock is infinitely easier to configure.

Thinkfan (Linux) or Thinkpad Fan Control (TPFC - Windows) are a given. Always nice to be able to set your own thresholds for heat vs noise.

TLP is a nice one-stop-shop for a lot of power management controls but I can't recommend undervolting enough, it made a huge difference for me. TLP config even has a place to drop your PHC values in.

>If you can't find 8001 (like I couldn't), create a new key under TPHOTKEY and name it 8001, the make a new string file called File

hardwired to the discrete card. Meaning you
have to switch to discrete graphics in bios to run
external monitor. Still don't know if any other
models have the same issue though

got 120gb version and it shit the bed after a month (only a solid 18 hours of on time, mind you) for which I got a refund then replaced with an 850 evo 240gb and have been enjoying for a good 6 months now

the thing used to crash after 5 minutes of being in windows 7 (like some kind of weird system hang) and the ssd would whine once hung. tried in various systems with multiple windows installations, no dice

tl;dr
idk mine broke so na

Hey guys!

My current situation right now revolves around privacy, and leaving no footprints. I'm using Tails on my machines right now, but I'm interested in the most "secure" Thinkpad, one that is durable and lightweight. Can easily be carried place-to-place, and could potentially be upgradeable (display/ram wise)

There any models that meet my needs? I'm looking at some T60's right now since one without a HDD is only 20 bucks, and I don't even need a hard drive since I run everything off external storage.

Budget usually isn't a problem, but ideally I'd like to spend the least amount of money possible since I will only be doing coding, surfing the web, etc. Privacy is the number one factor, though. I essentially want an impenetrable fortress, and Thinkpads seem to be my best option right now. I currently have a T510, which is great, but it's bulky as shit and I really don't need all this screen space.

I'm looking to try the eGPU scene out.

I have an X220, and I already have a spare psu and 660Ti graphics card.

Am I supposed to get the PE4L v2.1b or this PE4C v2.1 I keep seeing? Is there a difference?
Is there a better one out there instead?
I'd appreciate a guide/some info on this, and where to buy them.

Also what small cases are good to buy for this, and will it work with a docking station too?
>>
>>52099988
Yeah, that is one of the things that stands out the most to me.

I remember getting a refurb X60t (or X61t, can't remember) that was 32-bit, and I hated the fact that I couldn't go beyond 2gb ram. Ended up selling it a long time ago, don't remember too much else about it. Had it for like 3 days.

Do all of the X60/X61's suffer from this?
>>
>>52100068

>>
>>52100026
I remember wanting to get into that scene a while back, there was something called ViDock I was looking into but I'm sure you want to do it DIY.

You may still be able to get some good information just from their explanations and shit.

x61's support more ram, x60t did only support 2gb so I guess you had a x60t. I would say that you should buy x61

ViDock looks pretty great, could even fit inside a bag, I'm gonna look into this a bit more. Some guy on youtube used the same gpu as mine, an ASUS 660Ti, and it didn't fit in the case, but he said there's a larger ViDock available or something

>>52100249
Yeah, it looked really good when I was checking it out a few years back, but you could build one yourself for a fraction of the cost. If you're good at DIY shit, you could build your own little case for it and everything. I saw some dude who made one with a cardboard box, but I highly recommend against that for obvious reasons.

Vidock is a bloody ripoff. I spent too long looking at videos and tutorials before the actual price itself. It's 3 times the cost of a one of those PE4L things, just because it includes a case as well.

Imma DIY this, so I'll be looking into small cases, or if I should just use my uni to build a small case myself out of some thick wood or something

http://hacksr.blogspot.ch/2012/01/display-port-on-thinkpad-t420-with.html

So yes, seems to be the problem with every model featuring optimus.

I know nvidia is the problem here, but will this ever be fixed so gnu/linux users can benefit from the optimus "technology"?

How's Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14? seeing one for ~$700 with i5 5200u, 1 TB hdd & 16 gb SSD. Heard about few defects but seems like only in older ones with 4210U CPU. What do you think?
>>
Guys I've had a thinkpad x201 for like 2 years now, but there are some issues with it, so I was considering getting a replacement.

What I like:
- Light and small
- Works great with Linux
- sort of powerful
- Trackpoint
- solid build, flexible screen
- good battery life, tlp, etc

What I don't like:
- max 8GB RAM
- WiFi is just dying. I tried everything, and it seems that the problem is with the ThinkPad (e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=197233 )
- screen is meh in terms of colours even calibrated

What should I look into? According to the guide it seems like I should be looking in X22x?

I had one. It feels pretty much exactly like one on one of the newer thinkpads, which in my opinion is meh. It's probably one of the best membrane keyboards you can get, though. My big problem with using it for desktop is that it's a laptop keyboard, designed for portability when you don't need it for desktop, so you miss out on some important features like numpad and other such.

That being said, I also had some problems with it dropping from bluetooth, but you should be able to plug it in and use it wired. Also, for wireless mode, it's really frustrating how it doesn't have a replacable battery.

>>
>>52105980
Laptop. Tablets are too expensive for me. And buying a lappy with just C2D, well, I'm not sure if it's very future proof. Something with at least i series might be better. For x201 the top case uses a magnesium alloy cover, the bottom uses a magnesium rollcage and casing. I think x201s (the s version)uses a carbon fiber/glass fiber composite for the top cover, so it should be more resistant to cracking if you start dropping it often but strenght wise they should be about the same.
>>52106139
I can hit the bottom of my laptop pretty hard and it takes it as if it's nothing, drop it on the table and such. Haven't tried standing on it, yet.
You should start googling stuff about each model, you'll find info about frames and other things.
