Converting My 25 GB FLAC's To lossy codec for portable use
(AIMP for android and a rockboxed Sansa Clip+,So all formats will play fine)
Should I go MusePack,AAC,MP3(pls no),OPUS,Vorbis or someting else I missed?
Small file size while being audible transparant is my goal.
According to hydrogen audio, Opus and Apple AAC were the best 64-128 kbps. It's more of a mixed bag beyond that since they don't really test beyond 128kbps (they consider 160kbps in almost any codec to be relatively transparent).
what bitrate you gonna use OP/

Opus at 160kbps
Opus at 192kbps
I always use 256K Opus. Overkill, but whatever.
Id say anything above 128 kbps in Opus or Vorbis. I'm using Vorbis cause my favorite player doesn't support opus. Either way, its better than MP3.
Opus at > 170kbps for transparency is probably the best choice.

I have about 25GB in Vorbis. What are you doing, son?
>>52075927
So you're converting what..? About 8 songs?

As this image points out vorbis and opus are about equal at 128kbps and above. I would go with vorbis -q5 for transparency or vorbis -q4 if you want to save a little extra space. Opus is clearly superior if you go below 128kbps.
opus 160kbps would suffice.
Just batch it.

Nah, that's the smartest way to go.With today's storage space even on tiny dirt cheap 16 GB usb drives 256 kbps songs go for about 5-8 MB a song which is still reasonable for a library of music at pretty much perfect quality. At 160 my brain would make me think the quuality is shit. I've become used to thinking 256 is cd quality nowadays.
I remember when Napster was talking about how 128 was cd quality and then later on everyone said 128 is dogshit.
V0 Mp3 master race
Either 128, 160, or 192 vbr Opus.
Do ABX tests to confirm which sounds the best. I bombed all my ABX tests at 128 vbr so I chose that for phone music storage.

if opus and vorbis are about equal above 128kbps, why would you recommend vorbis over opus?
>>52076960
Because they take up the same file size being equal bitrates, and Vorbis has the added bonus of being supported by many things where Opus isn't.
>>52076988
But all of OP's devices support Opus, and Vorbis is now deprecated. there's no reason to continue dragging Vorbis baggage into the future when Opus is either the same or better than it in all situations.

Opus can't go above 20KHz, Vorbis can. Nuff said.

25gbs of flac is a really small amouny, why not just take it all?
My compressed music is over 25 gbs.
Opus at 96Kbps is acceptably transparent and will give you lot of space savings.
