Pretty reliable IMHO, but if one of your drives was bad than all the disks you used in it went bad. Still more reliable than ZIP or cheap CDRs.
>>52071637
Don't know if the word laminator applies to it in English. The official term is Mimeograph, its an old copying device that basically impregnated the entire room with a strong smell after use.
>>52071717
so this memeograph was like a printing press then?

Yea a mimeograph is like a printing press. It was widely used at schools in the 90s of my area.

Even being a retro collector I only bust them out for ultra-old hardware, driver installs or niche shit like Windows NT ERDs, otherwise I attach my shit to the network or zip/cartridge hard disks for file transfers.
They're too slow and shitty, nobody liked them even when they were in vogue.

Vinyl has some added bonuses over optical and digital formats, mostly in larger, frameable album art, extras like inserts, they're also nicer to store than jewel cases.
Floppy disks never really had any of that shit, they're shit to store, fragile as fuck, and have dick capacity by pretty much any standard.
>>52071358
this. 3.5in floppies were terrible in just about every sense.
8 disks to install windows 3.1. each disk would take 10mins to load. even by the standards back then it was painfully slow and awful. writing one took even longer and half the time it wouldnt write correctly.

Oh anon, you need to be more creative.
You'll get hipsters encoding to 92kbps MP3's to fit them on the disks, claiming they're more "Retro" as they sound like the music you'd get on limewire.
They'll be playing them on PCI audio cards and music with metadata showing it was actually from the 90's-2000's, shared on p2p sites, an "Original", will be highly sought after.
Trolls will take any old mp3, downscale them to 20kbps, jump them back up to 92kbps, change the meta and make hipsters look like fucking idiots.

Nah, I doubt it. Turntables are easy to find new or used, they're easy to fix, they last a long time, and records are good for more than two plays before the magnetic material starts flaking off. Not to mention there's a nostalgia factor in the mainstream; everyone had a turntable as a kid, everyone listened to records, they're a fixture in pop culture, and they make for nice display pieces.
Floppy disks didn't have that, they weren't made for media, computers that used them as a primary means of data transfer were expensive as fuck and rare in the home, most normalfags don't have a sense of nostalgia for copying spreadsheets to a disk, pretty much all post-nehalem systems don't have floppy controllers, and add-in controller cards are expensive as fuck.
CDs on the other hand will probably have that hipster nostalgia factor long after their expiration date has come and gone for the same reasons as vinyl, except it will be "90s kids" driving it. I'm not looking forward to that.

Floppies was not reliable.
The protector thing could easily slide aside in your bag and you have lost everything.
I lost files several times on floppies.
And half the floppies I stored securely for a year and then tried to access it was destroyed.
It was flaky as hell.
Compared to flash drives, hard disks, tape, SSD and optical, this was the worst way to transfer information
>>52078018
It was the best there was at the time though. And any drive could read or write. CDs improved storage capacity but hardly any computers could write to them, and only once. Only flash drives completely replaced floppies.
Past technology is shit, no duh
>>52074884
is there anything you can do with these anymore? i mean anything worthwhile.
>>52077936
But you are wrong.
My grandmother have only learned to a single application and she switched to ubuntu-mate when windows got too slow for her laptop.
Obviously she had me install it, but she quickly learned how to use the laptop on the new system.
This is not even the average user.
She uses the computer once a month to do this one thing and she can figure out how to do it.
There are certain DE's which are a lot more consistent than windows and people have to adjust to new things with windows all the time.
Windows 8 was a lot less user friendly than mate, kde, gnome, cinnamon and xfce.
I know people on /g/ likes to tinker with things and likes to program their way out of every situation, but it doesn't have to be this way. For the average user, linux is easier, more consistent and runs on hardware windows gave up on.

Sort of, but the way they worked was weird. The teacher would write or type on special paper that had a sort of pressure-activated adhesive for dye on it, and then put that paper on the roller, and when it was rolled against another sheet it'd transfer some of the adhesive to it, and then roll it against a dye roller that would color the letters or images.

When you saw a phone number with several instances of 8, 9, or 0, you'd recoil a bit in horror. It irritated the skin on your finger to dial the higher numbers (and zero).

These fucking things would crackle and pop whenever you tried to walk around the house. Which was the fucking point of a cordless phone.
Plus, like shitty earbuds of today, it was a crapshoot as to whether you'd get sound reproduction that was any good. For awhile, I actually preferred an old 900MHz analog cordless to the digital cordless, simply because the speaker quality was higher.
Also, someone in the family would consistently leave it in some weird place and/or never hang it back up, so the battery would die in the middle of your call.
This was my first modem. Attached to my Amiga.
While the build quality was top notch, and having a modem was obviously indescribably better than having no connection (imagine that! Back in the day, you just used a computer by itself! Not connected to anything! And we found that FUN! WTF), but Jesus fucking Christ was it slow.
I'd dial up local BBSes and queue up downloads, letting them run overnight in some cases.
My sister had to call the phone company to request an emergency break on our line because I forgot she went to the movie theater, and she'd been trying to call my parents for about an hour.
The end years of modems were pretty sweet, like achieving 57.6k with compression, neat technology, but the jump from a dial-up modem to always-on broadband is about the same as the jump from an isolated computer to a computer with a modem. I've basically lived through three eras of computing. Like, what you did with the computer has fundamentally shifted each time.

>>52088179
>I don't really see the purpose in labeling "generations" when people are continuously being born.
You'll think that until you get older, then you'll say, "what's with these kids thinking X".
For the most part, there's no sharp cutoff. But consider, for example, that my dad, who was born at the start of the baby boom, who grew up in neighborhoods packed with roaming children, who worked through high school at a fast food place making good money, who then joined the Army and narrowly missed Vietnam, had a profoundly different life experience than a kid born in, say, 1995.

That's not projecting, that's making a reasonable assumption based on your age.
By the late 1990s, digital cordless phones were hitting the market *hard*. I don't think you could even find an analog on the market by the time I bought a digital 2000-ish.
>Of course I would use an analog phone with my grandparents, but I had one at home as well.
Yes, the one you used to talk to your grandparents. That's how phones work.

I had something like pic. A Samsung "flat" 480p CRT, about 32".
The screen was actually curved along one plane, like a Trinitron. To achieve the 'flat' screen they just made the glass thicker at the edges. By the left and right edges of the screen, the glass was something like an inch thick!
I think the thing weighed about 150 Lbs. I'm not exaggerating, I think that's actually what it weighed.
I literally rolled it up the stairs in its box to get it into my apartment.
What a fucking piece of shit. 2015 is so much better than ~2002.

Oh, man, this. Steam saved PC gaming.
Seriously. PC gaming was just a huge annoyance. It got to the point that you were better off just tossing a disc in a console and firing it up. You were in for as much dicking around as on the PC, plus you didn't have to worry about going out on the Internet to find patches to fix hardware incompatibilities.
The ability for Steam to run games without a disc and automatically store (and restore if you reinstall) saved games in the "Cloud" is just awesome.

I REALLY don't understand it in this kind of discussion either, I was born in the 90's but growing up I used technology from the 70's and 80's because were were super poor. I used PC-DOS all the way past the release of Windows XP, halfway through XPs life I finally upgraded to Windows 2k and we had wireless phones in the house while other people were getting cell phones. This goes for everything you can think of too, VHS tapes well after DVDs had taken over, etc. I may be 10-20 years younger than some people but we grew up with the same tech, sometimes it was actually the same (their) tech passed down.
