other than "muh performance" ?

I have a manual that my parents gave me when they got a new car (2001 model). when they got it it automatic was an extra-cost option (it still is on low-end cars I think) and they saved a couple hundred bucks. Also got like 2mpg more than the auto, if I recall. I think modern automatics have closed the gap though.

also when it's snowy it's nice to be able to use the next-higher gear than you normally would.
>>
>>52070110
I dont drive a civic and it is superior IMO. In the snow my auto would freak out at the slightest wheel spin, manual gives you more control and is cheaper.

Is it? My only experience with it was when I went to look at a used GTI. I test drove it and almost got stuck because I needed to turn around and it didn't look like I had enough room. I couldn't figure out how the hell you get into reverse, so I ended up swinging a little wider and barely made the U-turn without falling into a ditch. :-)

Neat car, but they were going for way too much money on the used market. Bought a Grand Cherokee instead. Loved that V8.

The biggest benefit of manual is to prevent idiots (to a degree) from using their phone, eating or doing shit not meant to be done in the driver's seat.
You can still do it with manual, but you'll more than likely be in a very low gear and won't be able to make a turn unless you're in 2nd

I think the main reason Europoors fawn over manual so much is because they see driving as some kind of complicated luxury. In the US everyone owns a car and everyone drives their car pretty much every day. They throw a license at you at age 16 after a few quick tests and off you go.
Meanwhile Europoors are expected to go to driving school and pay thousands in fees in order to get licensed. Not to mention the insane gas prices they have to deal with. Right now gas is about $0.51/L where I live.

>Semi-auto transmission isn't quite as efficient in gas as manual transmission.

That's just not true anymore.

Go look at the mpg numbers on some new cars. The DCT will usually be higher.

DCT functions much like a manual transmission with automatic shifting. Traditional automatics were less efficient due to 1) transmitting power via viscous coupling (hence typically having a lock-up in top gear) and 2) having fewer gears. Modern DCTs address both issues.
>>
>>52071378
If Eastern Europe wasn't one big slum, it'd blow Western Europe out of the fucking water in terms of enjoyability of owning a car.

It also isn't moronically overinflated via taxes and regulations over there. Western Europe is overrated as hell I find unless you are used to say New York's cost of living.

Mediterranian coastal towns are nice because rich Englishmen vacation there and they really are a paradise, but everything costs as much as you'd expect from a vacation paradise consistently visited by rich Tories.

>>
>>52071445
True, but this other anon still thinks that his shifting actually moves parts in the gearbox which is retarded beyond help.
>>
>>52070344

>>

No wonder you Americans love getting buttraped by large corporations and don't give a shit about all those retarded 'intellectual property protection' laws, you simply don't care, or are really stupid, but since nodody can possibly be stupid enough to let others do everything for them, you're just lazy and apathetic, which is far worse than stupidity.
>>
>>52071432
>Faux-shifting in automatic gear boxes is less efficient than leaving the car in full-auto, at least in my experience.

I was addressing the two separate issues, not saying that one was related to the other.

Paddle shifting on a modern DCT gives you as much control as a manual. Leaving it in auto gives you better MPG than a manual.
>>
>>52071504
It's almost as bad as Europeans coming to America expecting to see everything in a week.
>>
>>52071524
Because that fuckface implied that he's able to control and feel the car better, while in reality it is impossible because he has no physical connection between his shiftstick and his gearbox. A lot of manual fags still believe that horse crap, but unless you drive a original 1960s car, you don't have a direct physical connection between clutch, gears and shift stick.
>>
>>52071524

Not GP, but if you're not moving the linkage and operating a clutch, you're not operating a manual transmission.

There is no point in trying to conflate paddle shifting with "operating a manual transmission". If someone asks if you can drive manual and you say yes, you'd damned well better be able to operate a clutch and a floor-mounted shifter. Bonus points for being able to operate a column-mounted manual shifter found on some really old vehicles.
>>
Pray tell, what do you need the so-called "control" for? Concrete use cases, please. Honest question, I'm not a driver myself and for me this seems just like an another "CLI VS GUI" debate.
>>
>>52071334
since our countries are usually not 2 days old like the whole USA and we are 200 milions people more in half the space (talking about the EU) it may happen that our cities are built with less space for heavy vehicles.

Technology advances, but the majority of Europe's head is so far up it's own ass that it refuses to change with the times. The only such system I've heard of (i.e. paddle-shifting, but also a clutch) was a Ferrari "semi-automatic" where you had to use the clutch to get going in first gear, then you could just paddle shift after that.

That stuff is sort of common in a few lorries these days. Clutch control for articulated maneuvers and automatic for the other 16 gears.

Anyway, manual gear sticks and clutches are still are hydraulic/linkage to the gearbox. The electronic systems are semi-auto and called that for a reason. I've only driven a fairly early smt audi A8 and it was a slow piece of shit, taking almost a full second to change gear, but paddle shift was nice regardless. Automatic with no option to override the gears is the worst thing though.

Yeah, I'd like a fun, quick, nimble, firm-riding sporty car for coastal road trips and blasting through canyons. But I'd be perfectly happy in a Prius if I'm just putting along surface streets and gridlocked freeways on my way to work.

I look forward to the day when I can nap or read while my car drives me to work on most days, then enjoy riding my motorcycle in relative safety on the weekends.

Why not?

You do realize even older buildings existed before those, right? How many pre-history sites do you think were ripped apart so major cities could be built on top of them? Stop being so sentimental about old buildings and tear them down. Document them if they mean so much to you, or uproot them and move them to some remote wilderness so you can build a museum of them. Don't try to justify the cramped, suboptimal city planning with muh culture.

>>
>>52071679

I forget where it is, but I want to say it's Japan, where they needed to put in a new fly-over connecting two major roads/highways. It needed to go right where a building already was. Instead of knocking the building down, they ran the enclosed road *through* the building. It's pretty fucking cool.

Also, I loved walking around Tokyo and seeing the innovative, brilliant infrastructure. Like, suddenly, a highway would appear out of the ground, allow turn-offs to surface streets, then go up in the air and around a curve. Plus really neat rubber-mounted isolation, and enclosure along the sides and curved inward at the top, trapping a huge part of the noise created by passing cars. Neat stuff.

Plus, watching the bullet train cruising in to the switching yard for the night. This fucking super fast train could cruise along at low speeds through a residential neighborhood with less noise than an American diesel pickup.

Compare that to America, where the fucking freight trains clatter and rumble through at all hours of the night, blasting their fucking horn a mandated number of times (with no specification of length of the blast, so I've literally heard a train lay on the horn for 20 seconds non-stop) at EVERY road crossing[1]

[1] since 2007. There were some morons killed, hit by trains. Instead of telling morons to stop being morons, the federal train regulators just mandated this obnoxious honking at every intersection unless there's a rare quad-gate, where both directions on both sides are gated!

>Concrete jungles are disgusting

Japan is great in this regard. There was an article about the clever building codes they have that reduce the claustrophobic feeling that you get in many built-up cities. Like, the tall part of a building is set back from the road, with maybe a one or two-story front portion that houses maybe a storefront or reception area. Plus mandated green spaces.

Tokyo really is a model of how to make a livable, high-density city.

I don't think you understand what urban sprawl really is.

The horrible part of cities is the obnoxiously ugly suburbs, not the super compact and efficient center. Sprawl is really a problem in western us and canada where the cities can spread outwards seemingly forever instead of being efficient. The transit and road systems are so god damn horrible because they just keep building rows upon rows of identical housing with little planning.

You're just a fan of the cyberpunk dream, not the suburban reality
>>
>>52070689
no
>>
>>52072186
>and canada where the cities can spread outwards seemingly forever instead of being efficient

I find it bizarre that you don't see more of that in Canada. Look at B.C. Vancouver itself is fairly built up, since it's restricted. But the surrounding suburbs really don't go very far out. Canada has *so much fucking land*, I don't get why they don't have sprawl much further. Meanwhile, they never had a housing market crash, and their property values in cities are insanely high.

Also you realize it's a matter of where you grew up? I grew up in New York, lived in Portland for a while, now I live in San Fran.

Did a lot of travel in Europe some years back. Your cities are eye candy, sure, but I don't think they are nearly as pretty as say, Sao Paulo, San Fran, LA, New York, etc.

You grew up around those cities, your formative years saw them as familiar, which makes them attractive to you now. I saw landscapes with skyscrapers that stretched beyond the horizon in my formative years, and that's beauty to me.

Why is it so hard to accept that some people have different tastes in what they like?

Suburbs are shit, but they exist because of the natural exploitative properties of capitalism. Demand for living in the city drives pricing up, so developments are made around the city that have a fraction of the cost of living, but still providing easy access to the city.

Dude, gas was like $0.88 per gallon when I bought the Grand Cherokee. And I got a great price on it from a friend's family.

That was probably the best vehicle purchase I've ever made. Drove through a literal blizzard like it was nothing, hauled friends around in comfort, drove around drunk-driver-infested Phoenix, AZ in safety, and towed things with ease.

Everyone wanted above Bluebook retail for their shitbox used GTI VR6, and 3/4 of them had reconstructed titles. And it was nowhere near as versatile a vehicle as the GC.

By the time fuel prices got high, I was riding a motorcycle for my commute anyway. I just used the GC as a weekend funmobile.

>But as it stands now, there's nothing more comfy than living in a smaller town full of history and good old fashioned people

Uh. Okay.

Small towns are cute, though they're often infested with meth addicts and weirdos who can't hack it in polite society (e.g. shooting at people who mistakenly drive up their private road looking for a friend's house).

Big cities offer endless options for activities. Want to take a cooking class? Done. Yoga? Twenty studios within five miles. Rock climbing? Yep, several gyms offer that. Want to get out and hike? No problem, you can catch a charter bus out to popular areas for a pretty low price.

The only problem I have in cities is the cost of space. I can't build out a sweet workshop with all my tools and stuff, but on the other hand I don't need to do hardly any of the work I do now (e.g. vehicle maintenance and modding). And if it wasn't for American liability issues, it'd be a snap to do a co-op "maker space" type thing.

That said, most American cities are shit. Unless you have a ton of money, all the housing is shitty timber[1] so you hear every cough from your neighbor and are woken up every night by loud exhausts.

[1] nothing wrong with timber for free-standing homes, but for high-occupancy dwellings you want the isolation of thick concrete.

i referred it as a big town cause it's the nearest big town around here and well 300k people are quite a lot even compared to 5 milions people town. let's say they matter. consider that we have municipalties around here with less than 300 people, basically the major is always someone's cousin.
anyway i can agree than big metropolis like american metropolis are beautiful to see, i love to stand under a skycraper but fuck no, your cities are nothing like what you said.
pic related is the real sao paulo. that's not the dream you described, you have big ass skycrapers built over 8/10 lanes road, impossible to enjoy by feet next to the earth's asshole that is that slum.
yes, is a pretty city TO SEE not to live in.
once again, live in a little medieval city for a period (some months should be enough) and experience what it feels like to walk around in a place that you totally feel yours, like it's made for you.
the feeling i always have in big cities is that i don't belong to them. in this way i appreciate what the contemporary architecture is trying to do, take a look at the new zone in milan, Portanuova, high skycrapers built next to the historic center of milan, traffic goes under in tunnels and people are free to walk through shops. that's something good.
