sup /g/. i decided to put together the best machine for as cheap as i could for gaming. i figured i would run my plan by /b/ and see what yall think.

so i was inspired by this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epIlB49SNTI [Embed]

in this video the used a server board to run two intel xeon quad core 2.4ghz cpus with some ddr2 ram and a decent graphics card and they were pulling pretty impressive performance with that set up.
theres a lot to be left lacking there so i ordered a better motherboard with ddr3 ram and pci express 2 with the same cpu socket.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-Dual-Socket-LGA1366-Motherboard-X8DTT-F-SG007-Rev-2-/361450812379?

but i ordered better processors. the best i could find on the cheap were xeon w3550s with a speed of 3.0ghz.
i paid 45 for the board and 20 for each processor.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0161S90ZU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_6&smid=A1PI1UGZBZUSUA

i also bought a gpu
XFX R7 250 1050MHz 2GB DDR3 Low Profile Ready Radeon R7

from a friend of mine who works at computer shop. they were going to trash it because the paint on it was kinda flaky so i got it for $20.

so im in this build $115 so far and i have my
motherboard
2x xeon w3550 3.06ghz cpus
and a decent gpu. how am i doing?

You fucked up on the R7.
Get something better that uses HBM or GDDR5
>>

>>52069495
hats a given but for 20$ i couldn't pass it up. itll be pretty high on the upgrade list.
>>
>>52069590
Ok as for ram you will have to go ecc since your have a supermicro just look up the compatibilty list and look for cheap ram.
>>
>>52069647
thanks for that. im not going to lie i bought this board half blind and decided to just deal with it. i know nothing about supermicro so any information or links are highly appreciated,

If your board is dual LGA1366 you will be using DDR3 ECC REG. Xeon 5620L's are very cheap. Maybe $20 each?

Your W3550 won't do SMP, per Intel's ARK --> http://ark.intel.com/products/39720/Intel-Xeon-Processor-W3550-8M-Cache-3_06-GHz-4_80-GTs-Intel-QPI
>>
Don't do that. Instead, do this:

Intel DX58SO bulk X58 motherboard (new, but no i/o shield) ~$110 (cheapest overclocking x58 motherboard availalbe)
Xeon X5650 ~$80

Cryoric H5 ~$40
12GB DDR3 ECC Memory ~$25

Total platform cost: $255

add in standard case/psu/gpu/storage

It'll be completely kick-ass, especially if you can get a decently binned x5650 that can reach 4.2 GHz. Way, WAY better than what you're thinking, and it would actually be able to keep up with good GPUs.

>but for 20$ i couldn't pass it up
20$ is 20$ too much for something worthless.
>they were going to trash it
...
>>
>>52069750
ok help me understand this i am out of my waters a little but hey thats how you learn.

what would the difference be between these two chips in plain terms. i dont want to buy the wrong processor here.
>>
>>52069750
are these the right xeons you are talking about? http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5620-Cache/dp/B0076RTRQ8/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1451161297&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=Xeon+e5620

and whats wrong with the first set of processors i listed.

You fucked up, you've bought a shitty board meant for actual servers and two CPUs that only work in single CPU configurations.

Just don't bother with the dual CPU shit. This is coming from someone who has done it, it's not as easy or straight forward and you'll struggle as evidenced by your fuck ups. It's not as great as you'd probably think and has a lot of potential drawbacks.

Just get a single CPU system, and if you can't get one for the same price that has the performance you need then get some patience and save up your money.
>>
you can get 12core amd cpu for less than $20
48cores under $100
>>
>>52069768
This.
Overclocked 6-core > 2 stock clock 4-cores.
>>
>>52070134
Does that $100 include damage caused by housefires?
>>

nice try nvidia
