has anyone here been able to go from NEET and poor to having a computer-related job?

what steps did you do to achieve this?
>>
Effort
>>
Exactly, effort. And being good at fixing computers.
>>
Motherboard socket repairs
>>
>>52064330
>fixing computers
you're equivalent to a plumber and you shouldn't feel good about this
>>
>>52064241
Learned how to make clocks
>>
>>52064349
Well I'm a sysamdin now, buts that's how I started when I was 17.
>>
>>52064378
>implying sysadmins aren't just the janitors of the tech industry

peasant
>>
>>52064381
So what do you do?
>>
>>52064381
I'm a sysadmin and I've been thinking about this comparison a lot lately. That said, I get paid pretty well to drink coffee and browse /g/ so I'm not complaining.
>>
>>52064385
data scientist

>>52064396
enjoy wasting away a finite life on easy "accomplishments"
>>
>>52064349
Why not? Nothing wrong with a little pride.
>>52064405
'enjoy' not enjoying anything,
>>
>>52064241

do you have an education at all?
>>
>>52064405
Only when you're being paid enough for a comfortable life do you have the luxury to worry about your work being 'fulfilling' or whatever crap normalshits think will make them happy.
>>
>>52064399
So you've got such a hard on, you call yourself a "data scientist". You're just a glorified statistician with muh formulas in muh excel.
>>
>>52064447
haha pleb you think I use excel.

so dumb you can't even imagine it
>>
>>52064460
The pride is strong with this one.
>>
>>52064460
Explain what you use then. Enlighten the proletariat.
>>
>>52064460
What do you use, then?
Not that other guy, I'm just curious

Underrated
>>
>>52064405
Except that I'm a sysadmin for a school. My daily bread enables teachers to teach and students to learn. That's plenty fulfilling. At least I have a direct, positive impact on those around me, which is more that a data monkey like yourself can say.
>>
>>52064586
So you don't really write the algorithms?
>>
>>52064684
Of course not, self-righteousness is inversely proportional to contribution.

The only way you're ever going to get anywhere in life is through pain and suffering. Dedicate at least 4 hours of study to something you're passionate about each day. Getting good at something enough to make shekels can take years but it will all be worth it in the end.

Currently I'm grinding hard to learn N5 Japanese and some day be good enough to become a written translator. I also hope some day to take interest back in computers and learn how to program in C++ and Java.

頑張ってください!

[Stubborn•length] "no matter what" - "please"

that's like saying you don't really write the assembly code.

Typical retard not in the industry not understanding that writing fundamental ML algorithms from scratch is not what the position is all about. Shit's done, we use them to solve problems, oftentimes cleaning and sometimes implementing from papers we've read.
>>
Sort of related question: how do I stop being a code monkey/CRUD programmer/shitty web dev if I don't have much time to study? I go to work, uni, have to take care of my grandparents and give attention to my gf.
>>
>>52064776
So you're just the guy that writes code for the real scientists?
>>
>>52064791
> I don't have much time to study
> I go to uni

wat
>>
Serious answer: It will take two things.
1. Get *any* job you can with a company that offers the career path you're interested in. From there show immediate and humble interest and availability to help or lean in relation to that career path. Without relationships, you'll go nowhere. Some of the highest paid techies I've worked with were fairly amateur, but got their job because they were well liked and trust worthy.

2. Spend as much of your down-time as you can studying and practicing whatever it is that you are motivated to do.
>>
>>52064241

It's easy to go from being neet and poor to working in computing and rich - you just need to be really clever and have a massive amount of drive, discipline and self-determination.

m$ pays 100k USD for each 0day.

Find 0day, move to thailand, for 6k $/month you will live like a king.
100k /6k = 16months

Repeat after 16months

I'm a sysadmin too and just use my free time in the office to work on my own open source project, my startup and myfitness (we have a gym downstairs).

Not gonna lie, sysadmin isn't a flashy job but I'm getting paid around 75k European Dollaroos for 10-15 hours of work per week. Couldn't be happier, to be honest.
>>
>>52064824
If you work and have all those other obligations that he stated, you would not have much time to study in uni.

>>
>>52067457
Then why would you break up with her, anon?
>>

Can't quit job, can't drop out of uni, can't kill my grandparents, need time to study to pursue a better career

Switch to engineering, never look back.

I'm in my third year EE and people already just throw money at me. I spent like 20-25 hours on an arduino pressure sensor and I got handed $500.

How to git gud at math?
>>
>>52067653
Can't switch anymore, too old.
>>
>>52067664
By studying (I don't, math is easy). I basically just finished my pure math courses, all I had to do was calc 1,2, multivariable calc, diff eq, vector calc, linear algebra, and two signals & systems courses.
>>
>>52067696
Nonsense, half the people in my program are upper twenties/almost in their thirties. Many of them had previous degrees and felt that they were underachieving.

>>52064349
lmoa off thyself
>>
>>52064241
I installed Gentoo. I set up a whole home LAN of Linux and *BSD systems providing different services. I got a few certs. I was willing to relocate to find work.

Do that and you should be able to find a datacenter technician job near one of the major cities in the US. It's kind of a crappy job but it's a leg up.

Enlist in air force, pick a comm job.

What do?

Should I just flip burges at the local McDonald's?
>>
>>52067750
Really? Do you know if that also happens in Math/Statistics/CS courses? I'm assuming you're from USA
>>
>>52067816
Go for remote jobs. If you fuck things up, it's their fault for hiring someone without experience
>>
>>52064349
Being a plumber is good honest work. Nothing wrong with it, they pay tax and are way more useful than your average citizen. It is something they can be proud of.
>>
>>52067832
Maybe CS. I've found that most of my friends in my classes end up being from the older crowd, and they've told me that they majored in something impractical that they enjoyed the first time around and now they're just focusing on something that's highly practical and useful like engineering where jobs are very easy to get.

CS might also have this, but I would suspect less so in math and statistics just because those are fields where you really have to be very good at it to get good paying jobs.

I go to a school in the Big10.
>>
>>52064396
Just like a farmer it is moments of hard work and long moments of down time if you are a good worker and prepare stuff correctly.
>>
>>52067816
You will need money to move, so yes, take whatever job you can. Try to avoid fast food. Bagging is easy. See if you can get an internship in another city. This will give you a foot in the door for when you graduate. Alternatively, work remotely (difficult to get) or freelance (you'll need a lot of motivation for this one).
>>
>>52064776
You probably don't even make your own cpu and mine the minerals to make it yourself either.
>>
>>52067832
I did a cs/math double major and there have been older folks in all my classes. Not a 50/50 split, but they're certainly there. Imo you're never too old for school. If you're more interested in engineering than IS I think you should go for it, anon.
>>
>>52067893
Thanks for the info, have a nice day!
>>
>>52067956
Not a fan of engineering, but I might switch to Math or CS. Thanks for the support!

>not confident enough for online jobs
Dude applying to jobs online is the equivalent of online dating, it doesn't require any confidence because it takes away the fear of rejection.

If you know how to code ANYTHING there are plenty of people that will hire you.
