What should I do with this fucking raspberry pi I got for Xmas? I've already installed arch and set up a small file server over my network with NFS for backups and stuff.

I definitely would be interested in running more kind of server client stuff, like maybe hook it up to some speakers and make it a media center or something.

I've still got lots of headroom in terms of ram and processor power since I'm not running a graphical environment or anything.

Is... Is this a desktop thread, senpai?
>>
that desktop is pretty sweet OP, there's no weeaboo anime shit on it

speaking of which, I didn't see any desktop threads in the catalog, I think this should be the new one.

I'm okay with this

This is a solid question though, I'm looking into single-board computing but I besides enjoying a linux environment I'm not sure what else I could use it for.

I was thinking of a banana pi though

I know what you're talking about. Besides a file server I don't know what else I can do with it that's useful. I don't plan to use it as a workstation or anything like that. Granted, I've only had it for like a day and I haven't really had too much time to think of anything more clever.

This much bloat on a server
>>
>>52063240
how is it bloated when I'm running <10% cpu and ~50Mb of ram during large file transfers?
>>
>>52063274
It's a server yet you installed a DE, 2 web browsers and a bunch of other useless programs. Are you planning to use it as a desktop?

He's clearly sshing into it. Look at his conky, call me when a Pi has an i5 and 6GB of memory.

How did you manage to install Arch? I can't get past the partition without fucking up everything. Also that conky is sexy, any tips on that?
>>
>>52063476
>Doesn't know how to configure conky

You should just switch back to Windows.
>>
>>52063363
I like this idea. Might set it up on a spare micro sd card I have laying around

>>52063476
It was actually pretty simple. Partition the sd card into /boot and /. Mount the partitions, unpack ARM arch using bsdtar, and move /boot from the / partition.. I stuck that in the pi and it booted right up.
>>
>>52063476
Also, I'll throw the .conkyrc on google drive if you want it.
>>
>>52063643
When I switched to Linux I began with noobuntu prepackaged Unity shit. Later I decided to try doing a minimal install, manual partitioning and then selectively install packages but I kept failing towards the end because grub would install bootloader on my usb instead of root partition. Took me 17 attempts to learn my mistake.

Now that I have this, I want to move up another notch to Arch. Unfortunately the wiki is not easy for me to understand, I will try to look for video tutorials and them test it on a VM.

I am a retard when it comes to computing.

Their beginners guide is top notch. follow it step by step and the recommendations post install and you'll be good to go.

Until you try installing nvidia drivers that is.

Here are some ideas:

VPN server
Mail and/or webmail server
Web server
Torrent / Usenet box
HTPC
Tor entry node
NAS
Self hosted storage (OwnCloud, optionally with CardDAV, CalDAV)
Music server (mpd)
Audio conferencing (Mumble)

I see you're running gnome

Installing basic arch is a meme. Just use download arch with some of the important shit already installed.

bonsoir elliot
>>
>>52065066
No, it's not. Do you really need a fucking installer to install the basic 'base' and 'base-devel' pkg group?
>>
Are Pi's capable of playing 1080p mkvs smoothly?

That's literally all I'd want one for, as being a mini device I can stick in my TV and do what my PS3 struggles with.

(I'm happy with 720p playback, I just want to know if I could get a device like this and just stick it behind the TV for 5 years with minimal fuckery)
>>
>>52065786
Most of them yes. No 10bit though.
>>
I keep holding off getting a Pi 2 just in case they announce a Pi 3 with better specs in the near future.

When their Pi ZERO has some specs that are better, you just wonder what they could do with a full scale Pi 3.
>>
>>52065876
Just get one of the chinese clones like bananapi which are 10x times better
