> Steam is unethical because of DRM and not being free as in freedom -> have getting any players on your indie game

Just curious is there such a thing as a successful free as in freedom game? A lot of what Richard Stallman advocates sounds like it would make computing extremely difficult, especially for a gamedev.

Turns out people who make games full time and thus make worthwhile games need to eat and have a roof over their heads. I'm sorry you couldn't put that together yourself but you could always just pirate if you're too poor to afford luxuries such as videogames.

All it takes is for people to play it.

That won't be a problem once we embrace communism (at which point all software will be licensed under the GPLv3 anyway)

CS isn't even open-source if I recall correctly, but Quake seems to be a good example as it is open-source and under GPL. I don't know why it isn't in https://libregamewiki.org/List_of_games though. Perhaps it has something to do with it being sold on DRM-ridden un-free steam, not sure though. Might just be because it's not on Linux.

Thanks anon.

Thanks. Although also not in above mentioned website for some reason.

Not sure if bait but I'll bite anyway. I'm not looking for games to play. I'm looking at FOSS at a business aspect and seeing if it is viable to have a good player-base. Also, FOSS games can be whatever price the publisher chooses.

There's this small game called Doom that's licensed under GPL.

The being known as The Stallman exists only as a means to provide the universe with balance versus the race of the Shills. He cannot be comprehended by mere mortals for he is pure light, as are the shills pure darkness. One must take from both sides and use the knowledge to achieve wisdom for to have one without the other is to negate balance,

Stallman said once in RT that the Free Software movement was rooted in ideas that came from communism, socialism and capitalism, and that it was in fact compatible with a capitalistic society that for some reason decided to listen to the neckbeards.
>>
I met Richard Stallman at FOSSETCON in Orlando. He called the Kindle a Swindle. I should have asked about game design.
He does not seem to think working for a closed source company is unethical.

Games have assets.
You can keep those proprietary.

Probably the Battle for Wesnoth. Not only is it foss, and very successful and widely played, there really isn't anything like it that's commercial. It's a strategy game with no real competitor or equivalent.

You're right, we won't need video games when we have communism.

Well, DF is leally set up to go open source in the event that Toady dies so killing him is one way to do it I suppose.

Really though, DF is basically Toady's precious child at this point. He just doesn't want a bunch of other neckbeards stripping her down and defiling her with their disgusting microcodes.

0ad is awesome imo. Isn't witcher 3 at least drm-free. And since the game is allowed to be modded, the executable file is compiled newly if you change something and the assets can be ported it's pretty close to being free as in freedom.
