It's actually fast but rickety package management and sparse repositories compensated for by an insecure build system, but the ease of installation compared to other DIY distros make it a fine education tool. Like a graded reader.

Arch repositories aren't sparse. They have less packages but a bunch of things are combined into a single package as well.
I've hardly ever encountered any packages that I needed that were not in the arch repos but were in the ubuntu ones.
I don't see how pacman is rickety either. Pacman has only overwritten one of my configs once in 3 years of using Arch on 3 devices, whereas APT has broken my shit like 3 times within 6 months of using it on one device.

Likewise I don't see what's insecure about the AUR. It's mostly just arch devs trying to push that meme because they (understandably) don't want to be held responsible. I trust TUs enough to not slip any bad shit into there, and it's not like you can't read the PKGbuilds either. I mean of course the official repos are more secure but the AUR is less insecure than adding third party repos in ubuntu, for example.
>>
>>52059939
The meme is real, after more than a few reboot/updates, random shit would quit working. SDDM, PulseAudio, Xorg, etc. Arch is a cool idea, but bad for everyday use.
>>
>>52059979

I use it on my laptop and shut that down every day. I also update it everyday and haven't had a single problem with xorg since systemd finally got properly implemented on the distro. It's not 2010 anymore.

I used Arch Linux when I was 16 years of age. Then I tried Gentoo. I used that Gentoo installation to grab an image of the latest stock Ubuntu and haven't looked back since. It's not worth it.

debian is a meme because when there's another release around the corner, testing branch is frozen and everyone who develops for debian focuses on moving testing into stable branch so noone works on sid. In this time it gets horribly outdated

That's not what rolling release is. Rolling release just releases packages as they're released. You don't have to reinstall non-rolling release distros, just upgrade them every month or so.

I don't understand the hate for Arch. It has a good wiki, it has the AUR, and it only has what I want it to have, since it comes with nothing.
Maybe it's because I'm just used to it, and don't go around spewing the fact that I use it. I don't see a problem with it.

Arch is for Autism.
>>
What comes to mind is an OS that's incredible for long stretches of time; has all the packages I want and is clean and stable and fast and then one day there's a message on archlinux.org that tells you the next time you run -Syu your system will be irrevocably fucked and there's nothing you can do about it

So you think you hate Arch because its a stupid piece of shit and fuck the devs because those assholes don't give a single fuck about the users or stability and its a miracle that it actually works as well as it does 99% of the time and so you say FUCK ARCH and pin your repos to a date before the breaking system upgrade, running an insecure and outdated system silently wondering why the fuck they can't just figure out a way to make things work without breaking

Then you realize you're a bitch and you can't afford a mac for OSX and using windows is like jumping into a sewage tank and there's literally nowhere else to go because as bad as Arch is its the best in the Linux world

Fuck everything
