The card reports itself as a 4GB card and games change their behaviour based on that to make the most of the 4GB it claims to have available, and load all the textures they can into VRAM. If you're lucky the card's memory management is intelligent enough to put the shit it doesn't need in that last 0.5GB. If you're unlucky, it needs something from the 0.5GB and has to spend a cycle accessing only that memory, which is when you get stuttering out the wazoo.

There`s a caveat on that: because of the memory overhead when accessing the crossbar, using the 970 on SLI will actually raise the memory issue exponentially. So instead of a 4% loss of efficiency, on SLI you have a 16% loss and not a 8% as you'd expect. It should still be enough for 4K, but it would be a pretty inefficient solution.
I suppose though that if you already have a 970, you could extend it's service life by getting another and making it SLI down the road (hopefully, the price will have dropped sharply by then due to the fiasco). But I wouldn't recommend getting an 970 if you intend to SLI from the get-go.

Some of you idiots seem to think that there is a specific ammount of VRAM that's good for a given resolution and it will never change. That's wrong, you retard, VRAM demand increases over time at the same resolution. Years ago 1 GB was plenty for 1080p gaming, then it was no longer enough and you needed 2 GB, now 2 GB is no longer enough and you need 3 GB. It won't be long before you need 4Gb for most new releases, and then everyone who bought a 970 will have a shit useless card. Hell, people who bought a 960 4 Gb will be better off, since they will have lower FPS but won't need to deal with the stutterfest.
