Not that this is important, you can also install stage3 from Sabayon or Ubuntu or whatever other live system.

Also, Gentoo isn't for everyone.

I'd say Linux Mint and fedora, but if you want to have more fun, but sink a shit load of time in, go for arch, or even gentoo.

I think many people like the idea of BSD users dressing up as slutty Beastie until they realise they are not looking anything like that girl.
Is there even any BSD/open source conventions where they have booth babes like that?

Even Gentoo doesn't take as long as you'd expect.

Been using it for a decade now. Almost all things you do only eat computer time, and that one is cheap... and not equal to your time.

They are essentially the same. Ubuntu has updated packages and more widely used for desktop PC's. Debian due to its stability stays with servers, hence not so updated packages.

Kind of like how XP users are frozen in time.

Mint is a botched implementation of Ubuntu, even worse than eOS as Pantheon is still faster than Cinnamon. It is the worst derivative of Debian in existence.

Hi.
>>
>>52045521
What is wrong with OpenSUSE? Not one desktop I have seen in any thread with this distro running.

Yet the website and popularity of this distro suggests otherwise with now a rolling release as well.

Am I missing something?

>>52045579
Is it on par with Ubuntu? I really want to try it but when I load the ISO on my USB, it fails during copying process with universal usb creator. I downloaded the ISO again 2 more times, same issue.
>>
>>52045544
it's most popular in Europe, esp. Germany as opposed to North America(where most of /g/ resides)

It's an older distro as well so there's not a lot of fresh hype

Solaris
>>
>>52045593

Try installing GeckoLinux:
https://geckolinux.github.io/

Smaller images(1GB instead of 4), loads from live USB, and some nice custom patches such as better fonts, pre-installed codecs, zypper package manager fine tuning
>>
>>52045593
Not sure I understand the problem, but try using rufus to make the bootable USB

The rolling release of openSUSE (tumbleweed) is bretty good imo. YaST is really nice
>>
>>52045647
>>52045662
Okay. I also downloaded Linux Live USB creator. I will try the Gecko next.

I am wondering if I can use my SD Card for live CD. I think my USB might be the problem.

Opensuse is mainly used by those who care about getting shit done rather than showing off. Its biggest con is that the stable release version is usually a bit behind in terms of software, however it's stable as fuck because of that.

>>52045593
Don't use universal usb creator. Use something like Win32DiskImages
http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
or ImageUSB
http://www.osforensics.com/tools/write-usb-images.html
Also don't use tumbleweed, it's unstable as shite. Just stick to the stable release branch.
>>
>>52045716
That sounds very promising. I have Xubuntu installed alongside Windows because I need to use Terminal and a secure environment to access infect flash drives. Also I kind of like using LibreOffice, it is growing on me.

I will try this.
>>
>>52045593

Ubuntu:

Software center is easiest installer in all of linux

Highest user base, especially in North America

More frequent version releases(not counting rolling)

Unity desktop is an option(turn off Amazon)

openSUSE:

"One-click install"(more like 4 or 5 but oh well) from software.opensuse.org

YaST is a really powerful tool for a user or sysadmin

Take snaps of your system so you can rollback to a previous state

Tumbleweed version for rolling release, Leap for stability

Choose a DE from install prompt rather than downloading a different .iso flavor like Ubuntu, also you can install multiple DEs and choose a different one every time you log in

haven't heard of this before

Thank you sir, I will be using this feature in the future.

However, for someone who does not or cannot use the command line, Ubuntu Software Center is still the easiest way for said person to add and remove software. And before you say that said person should just learn to use CLI, I would disagree with that. More noobs using Linux is a great thing. People who want free software and a fast OS shouldn't have to memorize a book of terminal commands, and I'm glad to see distros like Mint and ElementaryOS taking off.

it's easy as shit man

plus ubuntu software whatever's UI is fugly
