It's like going for understated but still has this identity thing or whatever. Its meh but I don't mind it.

It's a miyota 8215 movement which is meh, the brand had some watchest with swiss eta and some with the miyota 9015, but I wasn't able to score a deal on any of those.

I like it, the indeces, hands, and lume I think are done very well for a cheap microbrand

>>52035586

>>
>>52035583
taking a picture whilst the date wheel is turning is unflattering. like taking a picture of a friend while they are engaged in an embarrassing habit. Just because they do it doesn't mean you should showcase it

that said, its a fine enough watch, and its in a classic military field watch style so it's quite fitting.
>>
>>52035367
That's a very real argument for people with money enough to buy watches of that magnitude.
But you wouldn't know that.
>>
>>52035786

>>
>>52035786
If you have enough money to buy a Patek you're probably making enough personal profit already to not care about how much it will be worth in ten or twenty years. MUH INVESTMENT is an argument made by Archies to justify blowing a years income on a grail wrist fedora that's literally worse in functionality than a $50 Casio.

Thinking of your shiny man jewelry as something that will make you a hefty sum is just as idiotic delusion as hitting the casino thinking you could become a millionaire in one night.

But SARB is the ultimate aspirational meme watch. Everyone around here wants one because muh price/quality ratio.

The movement started off all over the place but has settled into about +3s/ day.

Just starting Christmas Eve in Canada since we are not the blessed Land of the Rising Cunt.

It is easily the biggest meme watch.

The alpinist is about $60 more if I recall correctly, the price is a bit unobtainable for poor fags and people with some disposable income would probably opt for another seiko like a sdgm or sarx

At least that's my theory, merry chirstmas, very nice watch you have

Got an expensive watch for christmas. Not really a watch guy (though I am very grateful for it). Is there a guide to removing some links from it? It's like 3 too big. Or should I just go to a jeweler?
>>
>>52039312
There's no guide, you just remove them. You can watch some tutorial on youtube, but jeweler is unnecesary
>>
>>52039312
It is very easy to do. Use Google or a YouTube video, but on account of it being so easy a jeweller will do it for very cheap, or even free. Keep in mind there will be a micro adjustment on the clasp to get a real nice for, and if you take it to a jeweller make sure to keep the links and pins they remove

Not a watch guy. What does "Automatic" mean, and how is it beneficial?
>>
>>52039521
There's one movement that's relatively robust and another that breaks easily, I can't remember which is which though. I would include the cost of a service right away on the price just in case.
>>
>>52039521
What in specific? I love vintage seikos

A hi beat movement can be problematic because they have to be serviced more often, this won't exactly be a problem if you have the money to service it (I'm assuming it needs a service). What I'm getting at is if it needs a service or is soon to need a service you need to factor that In to the price

I would personally go for it

There are two main kinds of movements, Quartz and mechanical. Quartz uses a battery, mechanical uses a complex mechanism, the mechanism needs to be wound up, automatic means the mechanism has a rotor which winds up by the movememt of your wrist and not by hand winding it by turning the crown

People around here appreciate the design and elaborate construction of the internals of mechanical watches, Quartz are functionally better in every way, but they have an aura of disposabilty about them
>>
>>52039690
>automatic means the mechanism has a rotor which winds up by the movememt of your wrist and not by hand winding it by turning the crown

I appreciate the explanation. With that in mind, if one is to not wear their Automatic watch for a couple of days, would that mean that the watch would stop running, and will have to be "tuned" again before being put back to use?
>>
>>52039690
>Quartz are functionally better in every way
That's arguable. I haven't set my miyota 9015 in at least two weeks, and it's maybe 1 second ahead of time.gov. In that same amount of time my quartz watch would be at least 6 seconds ahead (and it will only continue to gain slowly every day).
>>
>>52039721
Yep, a little spring will eventually unwind all the way and the hands will stop moving. If it is full wound (only takes a short time to fully wind) it will last about 40 hours before it will die, you just need to give it a shake and reset the time

I think the one used in the Lord Marvel was pretty reliable. The ones to watch out for are the 45 and 52 calibers, they're shit.

>>52039180
My Alpinist gets a lot of compliments, and I have to admit the look is pretty unique. The SARX series is more conventional IMO.

Funnily enough I got my friend a SARX015 as a gift. The finishing was great, but at the end of the day it's still the same 6R15 underneath. And because the Canadian dollar is such a pile of shit, you pay an extra $200 over the owl penis for the privelege of the finishing, when the SARB is already sort of "good enough". Beautiful watch, I was thinking of getting one for myself, but I don't really like having two of the same movement, so I would rather use that money towards a linen dial Lord Marvel.

Sorry if it doesn't make sense, the wine is getting to me.

>>52039610
Self-winding mechanical watch. It has a turning rotor connected by a set of gears to the mainspring. The movement of your wrist keeps the watch wound as the rotor moves when the watch physically changes position, tightening the spring inside. You never need to wind the watch manually if you wear it. This automatic winding mechanism was invented by Rolex decades ago. Pic related is a Rolex movement 3135, a modern and simple automatic movement. Here's a video with a watch having an "open" case back showing the movement inside with the rotor on top of it:

https://youtu.be/naj3POakHcs?t=283

>>52039721
>With that in mind, if one is to not wear their Automatic watch for a couple of days, would that mean that the watch would stop running, and will have to be "tuned" again before being put back to use?
Yes the power reserve is generally near 40-50 hours in automatic watches. If you stop using it, it'll run out of energy stored in the mainspring during that time assuming it was fully wound. You'll have to re-adjust the time(and possibly other complications like date, day, month, moonphase etc) when starting to use it. Once you pick one up which has no power in it, it'll usually start ticking within seconds of turning it around.
>>
>>52039749
As a whole a Quartz movement will be substantially more accurate then a mechanical. Quartz are way tougher and aren't as fragile and you only need to put a $2 battery in it every few years instead of having to take apart 30 or so pieces and oiling them

>>52039789
Haha, I indulged in a few too many drinks last night as well. Tis the season.

You're making heaps of sense. I love the dial of the lord marvel you're talking about, I just bought a regular dialed king seiko, didn't have the money to buy a immaculate one with a textured dial
>>
>>52039867
Quartz watches also need servicing, not just mechanical movements. Only reason that's not done as often is because the movements are often disposable.
>>
>>52039885
They don't have up to a hundred parts though, and don't need years of knowledge to do

It's also not required as often, there's fewer moving parts and they wear less. Even a fully jeweled quartz movement only requires jewels on a few wheels. But yeah of course they could always use a teardown and a good cleaning and re-oiling every once in a while.

My 44 caliber King Seiko was last serviced in 2005 and still runs perfectly. The movement is so highly jeweled there is basically no friction occuring anywhere.

My grandfather's 6106 probably went about 20 years without a service. Aside from the garbage power reserve, it's also fine.

My dad's Valjoux 7750 went about 11 years without a service, slowed down to -2m / day, it got a service and now it's also fine, running perfectly at roughly +4 s.

Mechanical movements are more robust than you think. Or at least "industrial" movements are, can't speak for "muh haute horologie" finicky high-end movements.

I see your King Penis is as big as mine. Any way to get rid of the staining on the dial?

I don't know if most people would consider a King Quartz to be a "real" King Seiko, but they are damn good watches for the money. 5-7 jewels in most movements, whisper-quiet, super accurate. Also among some of the most reliable quartz movements out there; you don't really ever hear about them failing and many still work fine after decades of neglect. A lot of the mechanical KS units are overpriced anyways, especially the fucking 45 calibers.

>>52044100
Weak canon pinion mostly. A snapped mainspring has a good chance of destroying the movement, whereas on a 44 or 56 caliber you're only out a mainspring. Also the servicing requirements are almost German car tier.

The 5740 is a more robust Hi-Beat, albeit at the expense of a hacking lever.
>>
>>52044106
Unfortunately I lost the auction on the model with ETA 2824, this one has a miyota 8215 and went for cheaper.

I wouldn't say it's anything to write home about but I like it, bracelet and case are 8/10 or better, un-coated sapphire crystal 7/10, better than mineral but shiny as fuck.
I can't comment on the movement because it's my first miyota and I've only had it a day, seems fine so far.
I would have wished for a hacking movement but I'm not gonna bitch over it.

The retail price on the isn't... great, but their divers are competitive with the obris morgan, and this one is less than that.

All in all, I would buy again if you find a good deal on a used but good condition bernhardt that isn't in a fucky color scheme

It's a snap-on caseback. There should be a little gap where you can stick something in to wedge it open. Just beware that my KQ has a normal caseback that just snaps off to reveal the movement like on any other watch, but the GQ I have has a really weird design where popping the watch open actually removes the entire movement plus dial and hands all as a single piece. I wasn't expecting that at all the first time I did it and it scared the hell out of me and I almost fucked everything up. It's sort of like a monocoque case but it's not quite that either, I don't know how common that type was but your watch may be like that too.

You want a dive watch.

There are many out there, like an skx007 or 'sea urchin.'

But I've worn very little under a 1k that has an actual nice metal bracelet. Certainly the stock bracelet ( if you were to get that version instead of rubber, the better option) on an skx is shit.

It is, they sell out within hours of being put up for sale.
>>
>>52045036
A Steinhart, just browse their site to find one that you particularly like.

It'll come out as somewhat over $300 though I believe. But it is pretty much the nicest at that price point.

Unless you're willing to spend that, I'd honestly just go for the even cheaper options such as Invicta 8926OB (or as it 28OB?) and Orient Mako/Ray/so on (not so much lookalike, just diver watch in general). Seiko SKX007 and 009 also good, but again, don't look that much like the sub.

Genuine question. What makes a bracelet great other than the obvious solid link construction, screw in fasteners, the clasp design and whether it has micro adjustments...

Is it just tight tolerances leading to low flex and rattle? Is it a superior finish, material or treatment of some kind?

My first watch bracelet is solid link, screw-fastened, has a nice clasp with no diver extention, but it is not a dive watch, its has good tolerance but a bit of give that I don't think would be present in a rolex or other luxury brand. It's very comfortable, I can wear it all day and it just feels like it's part of my arm.

I opted for a SARB033 over an SDGM or SARX, because the SDGM was twice the price and the SARX was a bit too "squared" in the design.

While I did find the bracelet of the SDGM to be more appealing I did not feel it justified the premium in price and I also preferred a diameter of 38mm to one of 40mm.

Also, this watch is of very good quality so I will not need to upgrade for a long time where I shall hopefully be able to afford something premium, FUCKERS.

>>52039114
I honestly thought it would be more accurate from the get-go, but I am glad that this will improve without having to mess with regulation.

Same boat as me m8. Honestly only afforded the thing after getting a fuck of win gambling (maybe if I didn't gamble I could of afforded it anyway)

Price to quality is the most favourable for the sarb, they all use the 6r15c movement if I recall, solid movement but it isn't spectacular if you are paying nearly a grand for one

We can only dream to one day be in the market for a luxury watch

Are there some good looking watches with compass? Digital or analogic.
Or should I just got a suunto or casio protrek?
>>
>>52047990
If you are being genuine ask away, just ignore the people who will be aggressive to you

I will however be civil, don't get a smart watch, for what purpose does it serve when you have you're android of iOS phone on you all the time? Battery life is also a killer
>>
>>52034641
Looks like Cartier. Think they call it jumbo or king or xl or something like that...
>>
>>52048021
>>52048066

Well in that case I just want a simple recommendation of a simple cheapish smart watch. I want it for work mostly, because I work in a "clean" room environment I need to wear a one piece uniform with no pockets. It's such a hassle to have to unzip and fangle my around into my pants pockets to change my music player or check a text. Nothing to fancy, discreet as possible since electronics (especially not a phone with a camera) are banned on the workfloor.

Would be a plus I can set an alarm with a voice command.
>>
>>52048084
Well.

Options are simple then, Moto 360 (2014 model) is usually the best in the low price bracket. Pebble is also a great option, highest battery time.

Otherwise a LG G watch (The original), cheapest non chinkshit smartwatch.
>>
>>52048127
Thanks anon, the pebble looks pretty decent.
>>
>>52048150
It makes the most sense of the smartwatches in my opinion.

It doesn't try to do be too much, it does relatively small things but those things work well and you get acceptable battery life and a screen that doesn't turn off constantly.

Have you ever even heard of a mainspring snapping in a watch?

Writing off the 45xx and 52xx series on the basis of what might occur if the mainspring failed is absurd, and especially so when you then turn around and defend the 44xx (good luck finding one with the weight still on the hairspring) and the 56xx (enjoy your broken day/date quickset).

Seriously though, I have the diametrically opposite opinion of you and would take a 45xx and 52xx over a 44xx or 56xx any day of the week.

>Have you ever even heard of a mainspring snapping in a watch

Not him, but it happens with enough regularity on any watch to be a concern, especially when you're spending $300+ on something with a mainspring that's gone through 40-50 years of metal fatigue. Not an absurd point, I would say.

I'm personally not aware of any issues with the 52 caliber (although when Seiko did a reissue of the 52 KS, they actually used a 56 caliber, so I could be wrong), but the 45 has a pretty bad reputation. The servicing requirements are onerous and the cannon pinion is a known issue (even if the mainspring does not snap, it has been known to wear out over time, which should not be happening if it were properly designed). That being said, if I could also get a NOS cannon pinion and mainspring, I'd love a 45. Dat 36,600.

Its British slang. English English, if you will. Well it was also used in American English but has largely been phased out except for certain phrases which remain as idioms.

To cop a feel is likely the most common.

Cop, verb, to grab, snag, get. especially as in stealing.

Actually, the King Seiko re-issue used a 4s15 which is a rebadged 52xx movement.

Considering that Seiko resurrected the 52xx series as the 4s series in 1992 and then kept making 4s based movements all the way until 2013, and that my google-fu could not turn up anything on the 52xx series having well known Achilles heel, I'm inclined to believe that the other dude is talking out of his ass.

So amazon put this thing in my suggested products. It's some hypersonic jewelery cleaner which you can use water or diluted cleaning solution to clean your watches or anything really that will fit.

The fucking vast amounts of positive reviews from vague ass buyers "oh I'm a jewelery designer and work with precious stones and this is perfect", raises red flags for me.

But part of me wants to believe in a cheap lazy way to clean my bracelets, or even my watches themselves, probably only the ones with 20 bar water resistance and screw down crown/casebacks.

How do you guys clean your watch bands, bracelets, cases, crystals?

Contours of the links and finishing on the links contribute a lot towards comfort. The way in which they connect (where the pins exist in the link) and the tolerances contribute more or less to rattle as well as skin or hair pinching. Material matters as well. So you're pretty much correct.

My favorite watches in terms of bracelet comfort are my GS and actually a 250~ USD Orient, GS being the clear winner between the two. If I had never worn a GS I'd probably wear the Orient thinking it was the nicest thing in the world.
>>
>>52050434
side note: It'd be nice if people finally started to learn that leather bracelets can be water resistant enough for swimming or even diving.

The whole
>leather on a diver
thing is so annoying, though often the leather straps aren't the water resistant kind. Nevertheless.

The 52 has a few weirdisms by virtue of being one of the early hi-beat automatics. The reverse winding gear remains engaged while the date quickset is being used, which causes extra drag and wear. That could certainly be an issue (this design was changed on future 4S movements). It's also apparently easy to break the date-setting mechanisms on models without a spring-loaded changing pawl.

I'll have to ask my watchmaker if there are any other issues with the 52, but as far as I know that is the extent of their trouble spots. The guy's not completely wrong because the 45 is basically to Seiko what the MR2 was to Toyota. Quite a sight to behold, a great technical achievement, comes from a manufacturer otherwise known for quality, but major issues lurking underneath.
