Idea: phoneybloks except with FPGA/SOC. Every removable module just gets a bunch of GPIO that the designer can choose how they connect to and implement in the programmable logic.
Specialized buses and interfaces offer performance boosts and put less work on the components. Consider why we don't just use PCIe instead of CPU sockets.
