What's the right way to do it?

Pic related or should you spread it out using a credit card?
>>
For me.. X method. It's easy and you should have consistent results

Draw a Swastika or a David's star for Intel and AMD respectively

It depends on your TIM, but rice grain is normally the best
>>

Holy shit
>>
>>52016472
i do pea as for me it gives the most even coverage on 1151 and rice for 2011.
>>
I do the pea method.
>>
No matter the application method, if you want to get a good thin spread, it's very useful to preheat the TIM underneath a lamp for a few minutes before you apply it. Not scorching hot obviously, but get it a bit above room temperature definitely.

Do 5 little dots like on a dice, one in the middle and one in each corner half way between the edge and the middle
>>
Just a dot in the middle
>>
>>52016514
X shape, thanks anon
>>
Intel? Tiny dot in the middle. Amd? Somewhat larger die in the middle. Intel extreme cpus? X pattern.

How large the surface area of the chip itself is does somewhat affect how much paste you need to use.

Also IC diamond paste for life.

>>52016526
My new method
Thanks goy!

You don't really need thermal paste anyway. I do just fine without it, and it allows me to reuse parts.

Umm what?

Kek, can't wipe off thermal paste PR uses water

Alright, there is one crucial step the vast majority of you lanky, pale-skinned you cuckniggers are forgetting before applying thermal paste and that is this:
DETERMINING WHERE THE CPU DIE IS UNDERNEATH THE HEATSPREADER

Applying a pea-sized thermal paste onto a six-core Xeon E5 means jack fucking shit because the paste is not covering the outer edges of the die itself, leading to unnecessarily high temperatures.
Google the CPU you're using and the term "de-lidded". Look at where the actual CPU die sits on the PCB and compare its position to the heatspreader. Check the size of the CPU - is it a long rectangle going up-down on the PCB? Or is it a wide, fat nigger taking up almost the entirety of the space underneath that heatspreader?
For LGA1150/1151 CPUs, the die will almost always be a small, long rectangular die sitting just offset to the left of the center of the PCB running north-south. Apply a rice-grain sized paste running north-south approximately in the center of the heatspreader.
LGA2011/v3 are fat and take up nearly the entire spreader. Use a wide pattern to cover the whole heatsink, like an X or multi-dots.
AM3+ and FM2+ have a squarish die located on the center of the PCB, so use a small X or rounded blob on the exact center of the spreader. FM2+ APUs are also offset to the left, so be sure to compensate for that accordingly.

Also, there is nothing wrong with using a spreader method, as long as you layer it thin and flat enough to rid of any air bubbles/pockets.

?

CPU temps are pretty damn normal.

This is a perfect example of a cucknigger spread
You need a thin, consistent layer, not fucking valleys and ridges of paste
>covering the whole die of an LGA1150 with paste
You dumb cucknigger

Daily reminder that this is objectively the worst way and guarantees air bubbles.
