If you get the AMD processor it can help you get a better GPU, plus it's unlocked unlike the i5. It's not a bad option. And when a game like crysis 3 takes use of all 8 threads it outperforms most I7 processors too.
With dx12 multicore scaling it'll only get better.
If you have an fx processor there is no need to upgrade for a while. It's still decent.

I have an 8350 and I upgraded to a 4690. It's a big improvement because it's twice as efficient, produces half the heat, and has nearly twice the single core performance. When applications are still using 3-4 cores max, that kind of boost can give you huge gains, especially in emulators.
I built a second PC around the 8350 and it's still an excellent video encoding box and spare PC.

This is the core of the issue, with some games like starcraft 2 using a maximum of three threads. Those games are in the minority now but it's still important to take into consideration.

There is nothing wrong with using an AMD processor.
An fx 6300 paired with a gtx 980 would outperform an i4 4330 paired with a gtx 970, since most games take advantage of multi threads these days.
Plus the fx processors are all unlocked and can overclock decently.
