You get locked into this weird world where you are obligated to use K-programs or G-programs and if you use a non-K or non-G program on KDE or Gnome respectively you have to install a secondary gui framework that looks completely foreign from everything else you running.
Have you ever seen iTunes installed on a Windows machine? Yeah, it's that bad.

If you want something that just werks, gnome is pretty good. I have it on my work computer so my coworkers can use my computer without having to learn my riced out DE. It's not bad, but it is rather opinionated, which makes it annoying for ricing. But if you're not into that, gnome is great.
